Money appeared in my bank account

Just under £3k has mysteriously appeared in our joint bank account. Dh knows nothing about it. Neither do I.

I will talk to the bank on Monday, but in the meantime, I'm speculating. Could this be something dodgy or a genuine mistake?

It's an Internet transfer from a bank in Swansea. Confused

Glad it’s sorted OP

Good for you. I hope lots of goodness comes your way.
Great thread.

Talk to the bank and leave it with them. The fraudsters will contact you in a few days, from a number that appears to be the same as your bank’s asking for you to transfer the money yourself to another account.

Don’t. Hang up and report to your bank, the bank will never ask you to transfer the money yourself.

This was in the news somewhere last week, aparently has been a very successful scheme we’re people are inadvertently becoming money mules.

Glad to read this has been sorted out but the person who made the mistake needs to wise up! The banks introduced the message about names and account numbers not matching to help stop fraud - it’s a problem if people ignore the message or rush the transfer and don’t read the message.
I’ve heard of another case like this on a radio programme where an elderly gentleman just ignored the warnings and repeatedly transferred sums until the bank blocked any more.
Hopefully this person won’t do it again!

Well done op for doing the right thing. I bet the person that sent it was relieved.

Goodness me!

This thread is a prime example of posters not bothering to read the thread first (or at least the OP's updates) before offering advice.

The OP posted on Saturday that she had already contacted her bank who were investigating.

The OP has since updated that the bank has resolved the issue and it was not a scam but a customer error.

Why are posters still telling the OP to talk to her bank?

@ShrinkingViolet9

Why are posters still telling the OP to talk to her bank?

Because they are so special and important that they don't need to read the thread and no one else is capable of coming up with the solution they did.

@AlexaShutUp

What's the betting that I'll still get a few more posts on here advising me to contact the bank? Wink
LOL ... and to cancel the cheque Wink Wink

Delighted you got to the bottom of it and I'd say that the other party is delighted to get their money back too!

whynotwhatknot · 12/01/2022 16:36

glad its sorted

theyre bloody lucky though if you admit its your own fault some banks will wash their hands of it
