Money appeared in my bank account

Just under £3k has mysteriously appeared in our joint bank account. Dh knows nothing about it. Neither do I.

I will talk to the bank on Monday, but in the meantime, I'm speculating. Could this be something dodgy or a genuine mistake?

It's an Internet transfer from a bank in Swansea. Confused

@AlexaShutUp

What's the betting that I'll still get a few more posts on here advising me to contact the bank? Wink
Glad it's sorted. I suspect at least 17 more posts advising you to contact your bank

PS I suggest you contact your bank Grin

Glad it’s all sorted and was a genuine error.

I sold something for £15 recently. Buyer said he worked nights and would pick up very early the following morning. I never give out my address and live near a big block of flats so I left them outside the flats and gave him my PayPal, and went to bed. I woke up the following morning to a message saying, whoops, accidentally transferred £1500, silly me. Please can you send back to my bank account…

Nope! Immediately spoke to PayPal who dealt with it for me. Dodgy as!!

OP thank you so much for following this through, I bet someone is very very relieved that you're so honest. If I ever make a mistake like that I hope whoever ends up with the money is as trustworthy and helpful.

TheHumanExperience · 11/01/2022 16:04

A local bank to me still only opens 3 days a week 9-3.

annlee3817 · 11/01/2022 16:05

Ah that's great that it is was resolved and wasn't a scam of sorts

ShrinkingViolet9 · 11/01/2022 16:22

@Pr1mr0se

Report to your bank. ASAP. If you don't you could find a bailiff or worse on your doorstep or your bank account suspended. It could affect your credit rating even if it's not your fault if you don't pay back the funds quickly so make sure you follow that up too.
Why not read the thread first or at least the OP's updates!

OP posted several days ago that she had reported this to her bank and they were looking into it.

whataboutbob · 11/01/2022 16:28

@2022IamHavingYa 😱. A cautionary tale!

HaveringWavering · 11/01/2022 16:37

Thanks for updating!

TracyMosby · 11/01/2022 18:41

I wonder if the person who accidentally transferred it was told to cancel the cheque…

I personally think you should cancel the cheque OP Grin
AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 11/01/2022 22:37

Good news that there was a simple explanation. I wonder how many of the posters who were absolutely crtain it was a scam will come back and acknowledge that you can't possibly be sure about something when you have next to no information.

HoneyFlowers · 12/01/2022 11:35

Have you spoken to the bank? They may be able to help?

and asking you if you bank with Santander.
strawberrymilk7 · 12/01/2022 12:29

Great it got sorted :)

Redsquirrel5 · 12/01/2022 12:34

Glad it is sorted I followed this the other day.

Someone put my husband’s wages ( monthly plus bonus for over time) into the wrong account and it was 6 months until we got it back at a time when we had four kids at home and needed the money to live off. He had to keep chasing it up. Eventually we were told that it was an error on the banks part but the receiver had spent it and was arguing. It was about to go to court before it was sorted then it was taken from his account and put back , by the bank, into his account! We had been notified and DH was going in to close the account only to discover the second mistake. He was not happy🤬 it was rectified swiftly and DH closed the joint account and wanted me to close mine but I didn’t want to as I have had no problem with them.
Then they sent him a letter to say couldn’t they do something for him as they didn’t want to lose him as a customer. He wrote to the Manager and received an apology.

I am a bit surprised that some people think it was ok to spend. It caused us no end of trouble at the time.
Thank goodness for honest people like yourself Alexashutup love your user name😂

Oh my gosh! Thanks for this amazing piece of advice - literally no one else thought of that 5 days ago.
MakeUsACuppa · 12/01/2022 12:47

Glad it got sorted, bet the person who sent it, and ignored the 'is this the right person' is breathing a sigh of relief!
