Money appeared in my bank account

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 12:11

Just under £3k has mysteriously appeared in our joint bank account. Dh knows nothing about it. Neither do I.

I will talk to the bank on Monday, but in the meantime, I'm speculating. Could this be something dodgy or a genuine mistake?

It's an Internet transfer from a bank in Swansea. Confused

Don't your online bank statements/recent transactions state the source of the apparent incoming funds?

And yes, your bank will have a customer phone line operating over the weekend and the bank's fraud department should be able to look into this for you today.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 08/01/2022 12:38

@CaptainCarp

I'd assume someone has changed a digit & transferred you money for a car sale or something by mistake. Check with the bank & just don't spend it!
That's got to be almost impossible nowadays with check digits and confirmation of payee

Could be someone who has the bank details set up for a previous reason clicked on the wrong person.

It just says Internet transfer and an account number. The sort code is for a bank in Swansea. That's all I know!

@Pheebs2021

Didn't santander make a major glitch on Christmas day and transfer to third party bank accounts lots of millions? Maybe this is something to do with this
That mistake there was a one off duplication of a large number of genuine payments I beleive. It's not that.
TracyMosby · 08/01/2022 12:41

Oh intriguing! Id be moving it to premium bonds so i didnt accidentally spend it… Grin

Somebody somewhere will be having a right panic when they realise what they've done. Hope your bank sorts it for you.

TroysMammy · 08/01/2022 12:51

Could it be an incorrect sort code input by the sender? I worked in Barclays and the account numbers for Swansea branches and nearby Llanelli branches could be used for either, eg 208441 12345678 name of Mrs Jones could also be 205132 12345678 name of Mr Davies so the correct sort code and incorrect sort code would be acceptable for both account numbers. So if the sort code and account numbers are compatible it wouldn't be rejected if this makes sense.

amylou8 · 08/01/2022 12:52

I'd be keeping quiet about this, but then I am a bit dodgy 😁 Of course it's not your money, and you shouldn't spend it/expect to be able to keep it, but no harm in 'not noticing' and seeing what happens.

It can cause a lot of trouble and can be considered criminal depending on the circs so this is not a wise approach!
ToastCrumbsOnAPlate · 08/01/2022 12:57

Good luck op.

My son had his bank details stolen and his account fraudulently used several years ago. A few thousand £££ were pushed through his personal account then withdrawn. He lost his account and had trouble opening a new one for a couple of years.

Be careful!

Mummapenguin20 · 08/01/2022 13:00

You should be able to call the bank op

I really think the OP should phone her bank now, if she has not already done so (or her husband if he is the primary account holder of their joint account).

The bank could temporarily freeze any unscheduled outgoing transfers while this situation is being investigated.

TheVolturi · 08/01/2022 13:03

Surely telephone banking is open? I'm HSBC and you can ring them day and night.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 08/01/2022 13:03

Call the Fraud Team at your bank. They’re open all the time.

UserBot989 · 08/01/2022 13:04

Can't believe there's no name! Do you have notifications, you can click on a notification of the payment in and get more details from a pdf.

My x thinks I have no idea where he lives but I can see his address when I click on the notification to see the pdf of details of who made a payment.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/01/2022 13:05

@Hotyogahotchoc

May be a scam and if it's a mistaken payment it can be claimed back
I don't think that's the case. Any time people send the money by mistake, they can't get it back unless the recipient co-operates.

The bank can't just take the money either, once it's in the new account, it's on the goodwill of the recipient.

BoredZelda · 08/01/2022 13:05

Which big bank call centre isn’t open on the weekend?

Which bank is that? Are you saying that they show the sender's home addresss part of the transaction details?

That's horrifying, if that's my bank I'd like to know so I can switch banks

elelel · 08/01/2022 13:10

We have moved on from the 1950s. Women are allowed to phone the bank about their own accounts. A joint account is just that.

I think you are confusing joint accounts with something else. Joint account holders are equal.

I think all big banks are contactable very day, the OP just didn't know that for some reason it seems.
CheshireKitten123 · 08/01/2022 13:13

No, this is definitely mine !

I sold 250 garden gnomes on eBay and was wondering why the payment hadn't come through.

PS no-one has collected them yet, so if nothing happens they're all yours

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 13:15

Yes, I didn't realise that the phone lines would be open over the weekend. I do most of my banking online or occasionally pop into the local branch. I rarely have any cause to phone them.

I will call when I get home. Don't want to do it from a public place!

And yes, we are equal on the joint account. It was my account originally in any case!
