Anonymous letter in the post today- thoughts?

Janeandjohnny · 07/01/2022 23:02

So today I get a card envelope which had been opened by local mail handling/ in error/ damaged. It was then re packed in a post plastic bag with an apology for damage and I got it.

My address had a quirk on it which is local, (my business is at my home address and that has the 'proper' address that I mostly use) so this letter I think is from someone local due to use of road name.

Inside was a sheet of paper with

FAGGOTT - time to leave the (drawing of a closet).

Kind of disturbing, odd and out of the blue.
Im happily married for 21 years and aged 48 if this makes any difference?
Should I ignore, throw away, tell police etc etc. Any thoughts?

Victim was tipped off about the site by a wel meaning "friend. "

Jux · 08/01/2022 12:56

I doubt this person knows anything at all about your past, they've just used an insult to upset you, the worst they can think of (whether it's actually the worst from your pov is irrelevant, it's their idea of worst). They might think it's funny to call you that, or they may actually want to do you harm.

This business associate, is there any way they would find out about upset to you and your family without divorce actually happening? Is this person just a sad little man who has little in his life?

Report, keep it but forget it. It's bollocks and you know it as does everyone you care about.

Bowwowwowoh · 08/01/2022 12:57

Why would they draw a picture of a closet rather than write the word? Is it a realistic representation of a closet?!

Forgotthespuds · 08/01/2022 12:58

Sounds like a case for Barnaby

flowersforbrains · 08/01/2022 13:06

I actually wondered if I know you but you are younger than the person I am thinking of.

Do you employ staff? If so, what is turnover like?

The person I am thinking of has a constant turnover of staff due to the fact that he is very difficult to work for. People get fed up and leave. Has no idea that the issue is him. Just assumes everyone is useless. He's a real charmer. It wouldn't surprise me if he received a letter like this.

What a bizarre comment.

Haven’t rtft but please call the police- this is a hate crime

Moonlightdust · 08/01/2022 13:13

OP, this business associate - do you work with his wife? Perhaps she had written an xmas card for you and he tore it open and inserted the homophobic message? He could have left the top of the envelope torn and then posted it which makes sense if RM then put it ‘damaged’ bag?

Marmite17 · 08/01/2022 13:15

Probably projecting as case I was involved in was so awful.
Do you work with vulnerable people?
Asking because 2 of suspects were. Needs to be stopped for their benift as welli as yours.

Marmite17 · 08/01/2022 13:15

Benefit

Bowwowwowoh · 08/01/2022 13:16

Apologies if this has already been asked: have you recently taken on a new client? Could their partner (or their ex partner) be jealous of you?

BreatheAndFocus · 08/01/2022 13:17

They spelt their insult wrongly, so perhaps aren’t used to writing this word. I’d either tell the police now, or keep it and see if anything else arrives.

Do not mention this letter to anyone else. Wait and see if anyone fishes for info about it. The sender might then unwittingly reveal themselves.

WonderfulYou · 08/01/2022 13:18

Mail offices can be pretty jokey places, especially with Christmas temps in and so many regular posties off isolating.

No one would do this.
Unless they were after some media attention, in which case they’d be lots of reports about it.

I am pretty certain it wouldn’t be the post office or wife.

declutteringmymind · 08/01/2022 13:20

Honestly. Take a pic and Return to sender and forget about it. If you and your family are happy with everything in your life, which it seems you are , then don't let it spoil anything and crack on. It could be someone who is envious of you or a complete psycho so just watch your back.

CheshireKitten123 · 08/01/2022 13:24

@CatrinVennastin

I run an online business and I can assure you that mail gets damaged quite regularly.

I really don’t think a Royal Mail employee is going to risk their job over something like this.

I would be very careful of accusing Royal Mail of wrongdoing.

If it's a mistake, wrong person etc then it doesn't matter.

If it's someone with a grudge then you are doing exactly as they want ie getting all bothered about it.

I would report it to the Police and then forget about it.

WonderfulYou · 08/01/2022 13:26

Definitely keep hold of the letter.

Mamabear12 · 08/01/2022 13:28

Perhaps its a prank and just some naughty teenagers?

Juletide · 08/01/2022 13:31

WonderfulYou Not sure how you can be quite so certain that no postal worker would play a prank on anyone.

No, I have no staff, its just me.

I've had damaged post. It's not that rare. Sounds like you have a prime suspect! As I like a good detective story, I would get something written by him and see does the writing match. Do come back and tell us if you identify the culprit. You sound like a very balanced person.

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/01/2022 13:44

I would take it to the nearest police station and hand it in.

TonTonMacoute · 08/01/2022 13:53

I once had an anonymous threatening note left on my car, we did find out who it was ('friend' of a friend) it was a joke apparently Hmm.

I do know how unsettling and upsetting it can be, even if you can guess who has done it.

I would keep it safe in case of a repeat, but otherwise try and forget it and hope it was a one off.

TonTonMacoute · 08/01/2022 13:55

I did this with my note, the police could not have been less interested.

You would need more than one for them to take it seriously I think.

That's quite a slur on our hard-working postal workers.

They do have rules and procedures relating to confidentiality issues.

It isn't just a case of popping mail through peoples letterboxes.
