Anonymous letter in the post today- thoughts?

Janeandjohnny · 07/01/2022 23:02

So today I get a card envelope which had been opened by local mail handling/ in error/ damaged. It was then re packed in a post plastic bag with an apology for damage and I got it.

My address had a quirk on it which is local, (my business is at my home address and that has the 'proper' address that I mostly use) so this letter I think is from someone local due to use of road name.

Inside was a sheet of paper with

FAGGOTT - time to leave the (drawing of a closet).

Kind of disturbing, odd and out of the blue.
Im happily married for 21 years and aged 48 if this makes any difference?
Should I ignore, throw away, tell police etc etc. Any thoughts?

Sadly we've had similar, it could be business related, we think ours was a weirdo on a selling site. Police listened and logged but couldn't do anymore they sent letters for fingerprints but nothing tangible. The libel was worse in that it accused of a vile crime and there were threats to property.

Log it if youre concerned but don't expect anything to be done Sad it's disgusting that these nasty excuses for human beings get to ruin the lives of innocent people from the comfort of their homes with very little chance of being caught Angry the experience nearly broke us emotionally so get support if you need it Sad

Some people are unhinged.

Sorry someone sent something so awful to you.

mathanxiety · 08/01/2022 00:32

For some people there is a thrill to living dangerously, getting away with low level pranks, building up gradually to worse behaviour to see how much they can get away with.

What I suspect may have happened is someone (maybe someone you've done business with) sent you a card or seasonal greetings, the envelope was somehow unfranked and therefore hard for you to identify where it came from, it was deliberately opened at the mail centre and the original letter/card removed, and the prank homophobic letter inserted.

UserBot989 · 08/01/2022 00:35

i'd SAY it's from somebody who is in your life currently and who wants to upset your content life and cause trouble for you.

But it'd have to be somebody who knows that you've had these bi experiences in the past and also somebody who knows the local quirk in your address.

So - somebody who resents your happy life, somebody who knows you of old, and somebody who was or is local.

who it is will come to you in a dream I predict. This is what happened to me when I needed to know ''whoooooooooooooooo'' and I had no answer. But when I was asleep, the candidate was presented to me by my subconscious and I knew, YES.

Yes but the mail centre put in a letter saying it was damaged on 6th Jan and re packaged with a staff signature initals so surely the staff member will get caught- I have the form and the note...

Mmm its really odd you say that. I sat reading it and a name popped into my head and has stayed. A business associate. Im not sure tho. Its awful.

Interesting. Trust that immediate intuition. I understand that you can't necessarily do anything though.

Cocoabutterformula · 08/01/2022 00:43

Sad so sorry, just rubbish that someone's done this to you

Electriq · 08/01/2022 00:45

Id say the same as the above, this is someone that has had dealings with you, maybe the partner of someone you work with closely who is offended by you for some reason.

FlatCheese · 08/01/2022 01:12

If the writing's totally different and it was open and repackaged, could the contents not have been part of the original envelope in the first place? To me it sounds like they've put two items together that don't belong and somewhere out there is a Christmas card meant for you that dropped out of the envelope.

Maybe but how do I explain the use of the local address quirk. Thats not my business address.

Keep it as evidence.

WatchMyChops · 08/01/2022 01:29

Is there a way to contact the mailing center seeing as your mail was opened? They might be able to explain why they did that. But I think contacting the police would be useful just for logging it down on the system in case things escalate. Hopefully it doesn’t.

Tilltheend99 · 08/01/2022 01:30

Might be worth contacting the mail center, as it seems odd they would find it damaged, be able to see that it was hate mail, and send it on without acknowledging that.

Paper is really good for fingerprints but presumably it’s been well handled now - (obliterating what would have been on there.) DNA may be on the envelope if it was the old fashioned type you potentially lick rather than self seal ( which card envelopes are more likely to be). If you get anything else handle with gloves if possible and keep touching to a minimum

  • cut the envelope along the top. Stick
It in a clean bag like a sandwich bag. You could definitely report it ad a hate crime. ( malicious communication)

Interesting that it strikes you as an older person’s writing. I know what you mean I think, that slightly laboured, blocky neatness.

Anecdotally, I’m sure I’ve encountered stories over the years where this kind of poison pen note tactic has been deployed to a few people around a local area by someone older/eccentric or experiencing age-related mental health issues. If it is something like that, the choice of insult might be totally random and irrelevant. Designed to upset and confuse.

It seems unlikely to me that it’s truly related to your early sexual experiences with men, as they’re so long in your past.

Unsuremover · 08/01/2022 02:24

I came to say similar as @UserBot989. My female friends had someone attempt to blackmail her by telling her husband she had had a relationship with another woman. Husband knew all about it, had done for years. But someone had heard from a 3rd party and assumed it was a shameful secret. My friend never hid it so likely it came up somehow. Anyway, despite it not being a problem it escalated into the stratosphere, so definitely be aware and yes report to the police.

Hydrate · 08/01/2022 02:26

I'm sorry that happened to you and the other PP's who were victims of hate crime. Filing a complaint without clues as to who sent it can still be useful. There could be similar letters and complaints filed with the police, that together form a pattern or a clue. Like they all were written with same ink or all were in red envelopes or in a certain locality.

Marvellousmadness · 08/01/2022 02:38

I wouldnt have given it a second of thought

It would have been in the bin and forgotten. Jezus. Not worth mental space.

mathanxiety · 08/01/2022 02:40

It could have been the mail centre staff member who signed it.
