I met a dog at the park recently called furlow.

I have a guide dog, and one of the great fears of guide dog owners is that we’ll get a dog with some god awful name.

In general the litters all have a letter attached, so if you think about naming 10 puppies with something beginning with q, then it’s inevitable that some interesting names will emerge.

However now we have the added complication is that a lot of the dogs are sponsored, and if you raise over £2500 to sponsor a puppy you get to name it. In theory guide dogs retain the right of veto over sponsored names, even though you have to submit 3 different names.

But e.g. Vauxhall sponsored a dog a few years ago and it was called Vectra. Some airline sponsored one called runway, and so on.

My DP has a dog who was also sponsored, and which is a name I didn’t think I could take to. However it’s unique in that he’s the only guide dog ever with that name. Which is why I sadly can’t reveal it as it could be outing.

I’m on my 4th dog now and fortunately they’ve all had fairly normal names.

Floyd, the best dog, recent passed away.

Charlie and Malcom are great names too that i ve used.

2bazookas · 06/01/2022 16:05

Lassie, of course.

One of our rescue dogs came with that name and we never found a better one so kept it.

We all learnt her name on her first day. It took Lassie a while longer.

Sprocket was the dog on Fraggle Rock.

I also know of a dog called Taxi. Friends had a dog called Benson and a cat called Hedges.

We’ve named all our cats after stars, particularly ones that aren’t very bright and are hard to find. Current cat is Eta Delphini. She’s known as Bob.

Bigbluefence · 06/01/2022 16:13

A bonkers jack russell called Yogi, 2 beautiful great Danes called Barry & Barbara, and a sausage dog called Daphne. They all belong to various neighbours, and none of them are a match for my no-nonsense ginger tabby cat Bob

When I was a kid myself I had a dig called baffia ( think Baffia against vampires) 😃

But I couldn't pronounce it and called her MAFIA instead. She was poodle and sausage dog cross 😃

@WhatALump

When my exh (named Dave) and I got our first dog we named him Rodney. After Dave.
our dog Dave was going to be Rodney, but we couldn't use Rodney so we called him Dave.

He is a real Dave, as well.

A former dog of ours was called Bonkers - not our name, we inherited from friends who couldn’t keep him. He was a lovely boy, so good with children.

OverByYer · 06/01/2022 16:18

A colleague had a pair of Rottweilers named Monkey and Drum which I always thought were great names for them
