@Hemingwayscatz

I like it when they have human names. My aunt’s dog is Gordon and the one before that was Jake, she talks about them like they are humans and it makes me laugh. I met a poodle called John once and a lab called Brian.
I once met a gorgeous big old St bernard once called Linda Grin

Just because a few people said it, wasn't Colin the dog in spaced?
Yes, that's why our schnauzer cross is called Colin.

Human names for dogs or other animals are so boring and unoriginal. How many people call their dogs Keith/Dave/Colin/Norman/Alan etc and think they're being so hilarious and different? Likewise the bazillions of Deefers, Jarvis (Cockers), Jerry (Springers) etc. I'd have thought it much more interesting to name a dog a non-human name. Also in the interests of full disclosure my dog has a pretty boring name too (though not human).

My dad named our parrot Sir Lancelot when I was a kid.
AcrossthePond55 · 06/01/2022 14:55

A cat named Houdini. Lived in a big old farmhouse with lots of nooks and crannies. He'd disappear to 'somewhere' in the house only to magically reappear at mealtimes.

@Gonnagetgoing

Many years ago in Majorca we stayed through friends at a villa complex used for yoga holidays.

They had an Ibizan hound who was lovely, red and white colouring, green eyes. A bit naughty, would do things like hunt/kill local chicks (yes sad) because he was just one year old. His owners called him Pharoah as he looked Egyptian, however the way you pronounced the name you said it the same as the Spanish for dog which is 'perro'. So the local Spaniards asked the owners, 'why are you calling your dog, 'dog'?!'

Same holiday we used to have to walk or drive past a house with a huge snarling dog - looked a bit like a Rottweiler but was probably just a big barking dog - on a chain at the side of the wall - called Perla (Pearl). Didn't live up to her sweet name...

My dad and I used to walk our dog (Emma) down the same road but always used the other side after a furious dog came out snarling at us and hurled himself against the gate.

"Slasher! Slasher! Stop it!" shouted the owner and apologised saying he was harmless. He was a pretty little grey poodle. When we calmed down we realised he was probably called Sacha. That road was always on our route but Emma, who was a saluki so a fairly big hunting dog with very big jaws was always nervous until she got well clear of The Slasher's house.

I've been to Ibiza and seen those beautiful hounds too @Gonnagetgoing. Emma was similar but a bit more feathery with floppier ears.

I'm close to getting a kitten just so I can call it Moriarty.

If I got two the other would be Holmes.
