Many years ago in Majorca we stayed through friends at a villa complex used for yoga holidays.

They had an Ibizan hound who was lovely, red and white colouring, green eyes. A bit naughty, would do things like hunt/kill local chicks (yes sad) because he was just one year old. His owners called him Pharoah as he looked Egyptian, however the way you pronounced the name you said it the same as the Spanish for dog which is 'perro'. So the local Spaniards asked the owners, 'why are you calling your dog, 'dog'?!'

Same holiday we used to have to walk or drive past a house with a huge snarling dog - looked a bit like a Rottweiler but was probably just a big barking dog - on a chain at the side of the wall - called Perla (Pearl). Didn't live up to her sweet name...

3ormoredogs · 06/01/2022 14:08

I loved Steven.

He suited it so much!!

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 06/01/2022 14:09

Eddie for a beagle.

When I was little I wanted three dogs so I could call them Freeman, Hardy and Willis. Instead we ended up with a Sealyham called Sally.

One of my own dogs (Italian greyhounds) has Perfect Piccolo as his pedigree name, but he’s called Raphael at home. We’ve also got a Vito and had a Dante (same breed). We’re considering getting another - I want him to be called Caravaggio but the husband wants Enzo. Shouting across the park, I think Enzo may take this one…

We had a springer called Serendipity - his full Kennel name was "Sweet Seeker [of Serendipity]".

Also had a cat called Carmichael - or Carma for short.

My daughter's partner's mother has a pug called Norman, whilst my daughter currently has a cat called Rory. My dog's called Hera (but answers to Basil... so I suspect she was misnamed - she was originally my daughter's dog) and my son's cat is called Morph.

My mother's dogs all seem to be called after alcoholic drinks (Tia Maria, JD - which is short for Jack Daniels) despite the fact that she is a devout Methodist.

My friend had a rabbit that she called Biggles, after the fictional WW1 flying ace. Always tickled me as Biggles was tiny and very timid, but a very well loved and looked after little rabbit who lived to a ripe old age. I really like the name and would consider using it for a dog.

Bollocks2Covid · 06/01/2022 14:13

A sausage dog called ‘Sausage’.

NotRainingToday · 06/01/2022 14:14

My friend has a cat called Horse
(no idea why....)

Lorw · 06/01/2022 14:18

@IamEarthymama

My dog is called FitzChivalry Farseer after the protagonist in Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings. We got him in first lockdown when we were listening to all the novels in the series. We were immersed in that world.

If, please Goddess, we get another it will be called Hobb.

(As I was answering the door last night a black furry bundle came into the porch, a tiny version of our boyo. I was so happy, she was really lovely. As we prepared to post on our local FB page her owner appeared and we handed her over.

She had escaped in June 2020 and ended up at our house. Back she came in another bid for freedom)

Made us realise that another dog would be just right.

Loving the names! My friend has a lurched/wolfhound called Brws, it's just right.

We have a cat called Fennel, taken from these books.

“Pet the cat.”

“What good is sorry? Sorry is not fish.”

She lives up to the character for sure.

ExConstance · 06/01/2022 14:22

We had a dog called "Marston" although he looked mixed breed he was in fact a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, which was quite a rare breed at the time. people would ask if he was some sort of cross and then I could reply "Marstons Pedigree"

Blossomtoes · 06/01/2022 14:22

Ours is called Gladys, it suits her to perfection.

RuggerHug · 06/01/2022 14:22

Just because a few people said it, wasn't Colin the dog in spaced?

IntermittentParps · 06/01/2022 14:23

You might also find yourself shortening Caravaggio and shouting 'Vag!' across the park...

Yes! Had forgotten that.
AcrossthePond55 · 06/01/2022 14:24

Our stubborn and very opinionated Dachsie is named 'Crash', because he's a real train wreck.

After losing our wonderful, trainable, and cooperative Choc Lab, getting a Dachshund has been a real 'experience'.

How do you pronounce Brws? Looks lovely written down but I can't 'hear' it. (love lurchers!)

garlictwist · 06/01/2022 14:27

My neighbour's dog is called Chicken. Not sure why.

Jamontoast87 · 06/01/2022 14:28

Brian the border Collie is one I remember from years back.

I recently saw on a dog rescue page on Facebook a dog named Cottage Pie.

And Spud the Yorkshire Terrier

thinkbiglittkeone · 06/01/2022 14:28

Judge for a working cocker - it's light brown with a big white fluffy bit on his head and down his ears a bit, so it looks like a judges wig - bloody priceless !!!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/01/2022 14:29

Chocolate labs - Bovril and Minstrel.

Lightningrain · 06/01/2022 14:29

I know a few dogs with human names which always make me smile when I hear the owners calling them:

Barbara
Edith
Russell
Agnes
Betty
