PenCreed · 06/01/2022 13:55

Ian - a slightly renegade greyhound who is walked in my local park. Hearing his owner shout his name across the grass amuses me every time.

8stone13 · 06/01/2022 13:55

I met a puppy called Enron, just after the financial scandal at the company bearing his name Grin

TommyShelby · 06/01/2022 13:56

My DH also used to have a spaniel called Ivan as he was quite terrible…

BrightYellowDaffodil · 06/01/2022 13:56

@Puffykins

In one of the Jilly Cooper books one of the characters - it was Seb or Dom - had a dog they called Decorum, so they could exercise it....
That's the example I was going to give!
KenAdams · 06/01/2022 13:56

My two favourites I heard on the same MN thread.

Gary the pomeranian and Pow Pow the Chow Chow

peachescariad · 06/01/2022 13:57

Friend called 'Cat' (mum cat) and 'Kitten' (kitten!)

allfurcoatnoknickers · 06/01/2022 13:58

@Stompythedinosaur

My favourite is a spaniel I know called Colin. I like human names.
My JRT(ish) is called Colin. It suits him down to the ground. I get a lot of weird looks at the park though.

Spider, a terrier who was a fantastic little ratter.

bebanjo · 06/01/2022 13:58

If I had a whippet I’d call it Devo.

@Lansonmaid

A friend at school wanted to call her two kittens Castor and Pollux, but her mother refused on the grounds she didn't want to stand outside in the evening calling out 'Pollux, Pollux' .....

Our current cat is called Pilchard, and one of our dogs is Otto which suits him so well

My (at the time) teenage son wanted to call our new puppy Bomb (although she did totally live up to her alt. breed name of Border Terrorist!). I definitely didn't want to be in the park shouting that whenever I was trying to call her back! He thought it was hilarious 🙄

However, can I please ask anyone thinking of Biscuit or Cookie to reconsider, as you may find you have a lot of unwanted attention when you're calling your dog in the middle of a busy park 😂

Friend's son has a dachshund named Dennis 😁

Gonnagetgoing · 06/01/2022 13:59

Many years ago when AIDS/HIV was in its hey-day, my best friend at school who was quite posh (14 years old) had a long haired dachshund called Adrian (not named by her!) who she called 'Aids/Ades' when in the streets of a posh SE London area. Caused us a bit of giggling.

millypeggyandpandora · 06/01/2022 13:59

My daughter had a hamster called Virginia Wolfe. We also had a feisty rabbit called "Priscilla Queen of the Desert"
I now have a tiny chihuahua puppy called "Mr Pickles" ... when he sleeps in his basket ( aforementioned rabbits carrier) we say he is going in his pickle jar.

JoyousAsOtters · 06/01/2022 14:00

I absolutely love naming dogs and think it depends a lot on the breed, but I like the sorts of names you could imagine at the WI or Rotary, or off my parents' Christmas card list so:

Daphne
Madge
Barbs / Babs
June
Pam
Brenda

Nigel
Trevor
Simon
Alf
Bert
Frank

Or names/words that can also make sense with dogs' characters like:

Patience
Prudence
Ernest
Chaos
Havoc
Culprit
Sunshine
Bandit

Sarahlou252 · 06/01/2022 14:00

Human names!
A friend of mine has a big hound type dog called Sophie. I absolutely love it.

My uncle had a Pomeranian called Jason. I also know a Nathaniel the Spaniel. My favourite though was my friend’s sister’s neighbour’s dog, the most terrifying Yorkshire Terrier you have ever seen. He would chase us to the car. He was called Rampton.
