Anyone interested in a geeky discussion about 70s girls' comics, particularly Misty?

I managed to find a website which has the ENTIRE print run of Misty comic available to read for free. Have been being enthralled by it (even though a lot of it was just after my comic-loving years - as so many of the artists and writers were the ones who had contributed to Tammy and Jinty comics...)
I'm clearly one of the older MNers but I just wondered if anyone else wants a 70s-girls-comics chatter?

Yes please, I would love to chat. I’m in my late fifties and I loved all of the girls comics back then but Misty was always my favourite.
Are you able to mention the site you refer to?
I’ve got all seven of the Misty annuals! ☺️

I loved Misty mag, never missed buying a copy. Back then I found some of the content quite scary! As well as daring. I liked that it was completely different from Jackie, Bunty etc

Which website...?

mumda · 02/01/2022 23:26

I was a Tammy girl. Bella the gymnast. And I remember sine really odd story about a girl who turned out to be a robot made by her parents.

I loved misty too. I have all of them in the attic!

eleanorwish · 02/01/2022 23:29

I remember a comic called Twinkle which was for younger girls. The only character I remember was Nurse Nancy who worked in a doll's hospital.

bestbefore · 02/01/2022 23:29

Funnily enough I was just reminded of a story in - I think - twinkle - of a dolls hospital (having seen repair shop on Google box!) - I remember the stories so well as we recreated them at home, I had all my toys lined up in their hospital beds in my room!
And once I bought a copy of twinkle annual in a jumble sale or car boot (as an adult) and it has belonged to my sisters childhood friend Smile - happy days

bestbefore · 02/01/2022 23:30

Oh @eleanorwish how funny!

Wreath21 · 02/01/2022 23:33

Of course you can all have the website Wink It's mycomiclist.com/misty-1978/

I remember Bella the gymnast as well. What I hadn't known until fairly recently was that Pat Mills was responsible for quite a lot of the storylines.
Other things I have noticed re-reading Misty now was how there were only about three or four regular artists, and (for each one) only about three types of 'girl' they could draw...

Early editions of Misty also riffed entertainingly on Stephen King novels: there was one story which was a kiddy version of Carrie and another which owed quite a lot to Christine...

loved Misty! Please share the web address!

refreshingseahorse · 02/01/2022 23:44

@eleanorwish I was in the twinkle fan club! You got a certificate and maybe a bade

Loved Misty, Tammy, Bunty. Also Girl magazine. A few years ago I bought a cd from ebay that had about 100 different issues of Tammy. I had forgotten how often the comics merged with each other. Also there are so many stories about hard done by orphans!

honeylulu · 02/01/2022 23:47

I still have a Misty annual. I read it over and over though it scared me and gave me the creeps. "Welcome to my midnight world ..."
There was a lengthy comic book story about a girl that turned into a cat via an Egyptian spirit.

The book I have was the last one and the only one I had so I'm thrilled to have access to more!

eleanorwish · 02/01/2022 23:49

I must have moved on to Bunty, Tammy, Jinny as I got older, but I really can't recall any of the stories!
Nurse Nancy is the only one that has stuck with me, probably because I loved her so much!

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 02/01/2022 23:50

I’m 44, but collected annuals from the 60s and 70s as a child- I remember Misty having a creepy but thrilling story about a girl with a crescent moon shaped birthmark, does that ring any bells?

Dmacka75 · 02/01/2022 23:50

Love Misty Smile

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 02/01/2022 23:52

dazzlingdeborahrose · 02/01/2022 23:59

I loved Misty. The silver racerback is one I remember. A magical swimsuit- only in Misty. Off to peruse that website!!!

BaronessBomburst · 03/01/2022 00:00

I loved Twinkle! I went to collect my comic from the newsagent one week only to find that my mother had cancelled my order because she'd decided I was too old for it. I never found our what happened to the kittens...... Sad

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 03/01/2022 00:04

I was a Mandy girl Smile .

lilyfire · 03/01/2022 00:06

@Mumda I used to get Tammy as well. The robot family story was excellent!

lots33 · 03/01/2022 00:09

Loved Bunty & later Misty - have about 3 years worth of the former in boxes but by seem to get DDs (15 & 11) interested in comics or graphic novels. I also have a set of Misty collections that were issued in the early 2000's. Thanks for the url.

I think it's a real shame that both these girls comics & the fun pop mags such as Smash Hits are no longer about for my girls. My eldest collects Marvel stuff on Pinterest but it's not the same (or as well written).

EBearhug · 03/01/2022 00:16

I was a Mandy girl, and still have my Mandy comics and annuals from the late '70s/early'80s.

TheNemesisOfLame · 03/01/2022 00:19

I loved Misty. I remember a plastic purse (or possibly pendant!) shaped like a cats head. Can't remember if it was a freebie or yiu had to join the fan club.

Most importantly- I think I missed the last edition, so never found out how some of the series ended. And now I'm off to that website to scare my inner 8 year old...

5foot5 · 03/01/2022 00:22

@ArblemarzipanTFruitcake

I was a Mandy girl Smile .
@ArblemarzipanTFruitcake

Thank goodness. I was beginning to think I had stepped into a parallel universe.

I lived Mandy. Bunty was pretty good too. But I have no memory of a comic called Misry. I am 59 so the 1970s was my time for comics. I did eventually move on to Jackie.

When I was small I was bought Twinkle for a while and never really liked it. Very wet. I think it was the sort of comic my mum thought a little girl should like but I wasn't impressed
