Anyone interested in a geeky discussion about 70s girls' comics, particularly Misty?

I managed to find a website which has the ENTIRE print run of Misty comic available to read for free. Have been being enthralled by it (even though a lot of it was just after my comic-loving years - as so many of the artists and writers were the ones who had contributed to Tammy and Jinty comics...)
I'm clearly one of the older MNers but I just wondered if anyone else wants a 70s-girls-comics chatter?

After posting on this thread yesterday I looked for my old Misty annual (1984) and found it in my daughter's room. Out of curiosity I googled it and it popped up on Amazon possibly worth nearly £800!!!

www.amazon.co.uk/Misty-Annual-1984-Fleetway/dp/0850378826?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I have now removed it from daughter's room permanently!

@FlosCampi

Oh yes *@Usernamenotavailabletryanother*! The girl in Misty with a moon birthmark, I remember her, with a shiny dark bobbed haircut. Did the moon give her psychic powers?
Yes! So glad I didn’t make it up 😂

Patty’s World started out as a story in a Spanish girls’ comic and was repurposed for Girl magazine in the 1980s. New speech bubbles and so on. Even in the 1980s it felt old fashioned, because it had clearly been drawn in the early 1970s: the younger men had long hair, wide lapels and flared trousers, for example.

Ah, my people.

I had Twinkle when I was little, and then Bunty, Judy, Mandy and Tammy. Before graduating onto Jackie.

I loved them all. My favourite was valda in Mandy, who used to ski down from the mountains and absorbed power from a crystal. The Tammy stories were a bit more earthy : abused maids (No Tears for Molly) and I remember School for Snobs where posh, entitled girls were sent to board with a cockney lady to “take them down a peg or two”.

I also collect 1950s annuals - I love all the secret societies and japes.

GremlinDolphin4 · 03/01/2022 12:20

Brilliant!

I was a Tammy girl and it became “& Misty” which my mum didn’t like as she thought the stories were too scary! I of course loved them. I remember Bella the gymnast and the girl who was a robot and a girl with a spotted horse! There was a Jinty at some point too? It’s a shame our dcs haven’t had the excitement of a new magazine every week. Xx

@iamthewombat Bit sad but it was an article on pen pals, I had quite a few!! J17 sent a photographer & I was more interested in grilling him on the pop stars he has photographed 😂

Iamthewombat · 03/01/2022 12:31

That is NOT sad!

80sballetgirl · 03/01/2022 12:35

Aww Thanks!!! I was a military child so moved around in my childhood, our last move was when I was 16, I had finished education & it took a few years to establish friendships (still live where we moved to) - pen pals were my lifeline!

I got Judy which I loved. My Mum thought Misty was too old for me but the girl down the road was four years older so I read it at hers. I remember one where a girl was an amazing pianist and performed at a concert and wished the moment would last forever and became trapped in an eternal cycle of playing the concert against her will. That was chilling. They were great stories, I'm sure they influenced the growth of goth!

Misty was my total favourite, it was delivered on a Saturday morning and my mum used to buy me a night bag of penny sweets to munch as I trad it. I remember a few of the stories.

Redannie118 · 03/01/2022 13:33

Its funny I was just talking to DH about this last night!! I used to get the annuals in the early/mid 80s. Gutted I never kept them, they are worth s bloody fortune today !!!

lots33 · 03/01/2022 14:24

@GraspingToControl

I lost hours of my life when I discovered that website!

I remember that story too. Another one I think was Judy was a girl who went into a strange mansion and was shown a picture gallery which she realised had portraits of missing girls. Of course she ended up as a portrait too.

CatherineMaitland · 03/01/2022 14:33

Ahh. I loved these comics!

A bit too young for Misty but I adored Mandy and Judy in the 80s. I was sad when photo stories took over everything.

The one-off spooky stories in all of them were pretty good. I can't recall which comic had the Angel stories but I sobbed my heart out over them. And which one had Nothing Ever Goes Right? - I think it was Judy. Anyway, the story absolutely did what it said on the tin, yikes.

eleanorwish · 03/01/2022 14:39

I think I remember the Angel stories. Were they about a girl who took care of orphans and street urchins in Victorian London?

Iamthewombat · 03/01/2022 14:45

Yes, Angel was a wealthy heiress who helped orphans before she died (had a year to live or something, ran away from home to spend her time and money helping the poor etc.). After the story ended Mandy had so many complaints that they had to come up with a new story combining the best of their Victorian orphan canon. It was called ‘The Secret Orphan’ and, ludicrously, was about a wealthy heiress who slipped into an orphanage secretly, masquerading as an orphan and doing good works!

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 03/01/2022 17:49

Did anyone else get a comic called Princess that had Lady Di on the cover most weeks?

Georgeskitchen · 03/01/2022 18:08

I don't recall Misty, I was a Bunty girl until around 12 when I graduated to Jackie.
I've recently brought from my mums house several Girls Crystal annuals from the 1950s. I remember reading them all as a young teenager and was absolutely enthralled 😀 I might read them all again when I retire 😀

Viviennemary · 03/01/2022 19:03

There seems to have been another similar comic around at that time. Spellbound. It only ran for about a year. Anyone remember that. I don't. I liked Bunty best.

Bookridden · 03/01/2022 19:04

I remember Girl and Tammy. I used to enjoy the Bella the gymnast stories whilst puzzling about how she could reach and maintain such a high standard whilst not having access to a gym. Probably overthinking it,lol.

Iamthewombat · 03/01/2022 23:18

She practised on her window cleaning round, which she was forced into by her uncle Jed and aunt Gert! The Bella Barlow stories are seared into my brain. I could make her my specialist subject on Mastermind.

Swirlywoo · 03/01/2022 23:28

Along with Bunty/Judy I read old copies of Girl, Girl Crystal and School Girl Friend and School Girl picture library.

There was a sketch called the Silent Three which I absolutely loved.

ChicCroissant · 03/01/2022 23:31

I used to get Tammy, my sister got Misty. I remember quite a few of the old comics mentioned here, Teddy Bear, Twinkle etc. I still love magazines but don't get as many - have bought a few more recently and really enjoyed them.

Deathraystare · 04/01/2022 08:04

I only remember Jackie and Bunty. My friend over the road got Bunty and would give me them later so I could cut out the paper dolls! I then got was it 208 magazine? something to do with Radio Luxembourg I think.

I have a Girls Crystal hardback book which was given to my mum as a school prize in the 1940s. Fascinating stuff.
