Anyone interested in a geeky discussion about 70s girls' comics, particularly Misty?

I managed to find a website which has the ENTIRE print run of Misty comic available to read for free. Have been being enthralled by it (even though a lot of it was just after my comic-loving years - as so many of the artists and writers were the ones who had contributed to Tammy and Jinty comics...)
I'm clearly one of the older MNers but I just wondered if anyone else wants a 70s-girls-comics chatter?

I thought I was the only pne who remembered Misty.

I started with Twinkle, then graduated to Misty and then Jackie.

But I also borrowed my brother's 2000AD and Starlord.

My brother had collected all of Starlord, from the first to when it amalgamated with 2000AD, while he was off doing his nurse training my mum threw them out.

So I’m only 33, but my I loved reading my mums old annuals as a kid, and I had the Bunty comics delivered right up until it was cancelled!
I’m so sad that they aren’t really a thing anymore, marvel comic books aren’t quite the same!

exLtEveDallas · 03/01/2022 05:24

I used to get Misty in lieu of pocket money. My friends couldn’t understand why I’d rather read than have sweets - I’m still the same!

Oh God, I used to have Judy delivered. Some of those strips were so dark! (1980s)

Lifeisbeautiful01 · 03/01/2022 08:36

My brother and I had a comic each week, delivered by the paper boy on Saturday morning! I remember having to run to get my Misty before anyone else! My Dad was the worst for reading it before me!

Juniper68 · 03/01/2022 08:41

I remember reading Jackie. My main love was smash hits. Loved being able to sing along as I pretended to be a radio DJ. I used to tape the top 20 and play it back being the host.

Place marking. I'm getting a 404 on the comic link :-(

PAFMO · 03/01/2022 09:00

I had:
Teddy Bear comic (must have been very early 70s)
Then:
Twinkle (Nurse Nancy causing me to spend my spending money on plasters and Johnson's baby lotion and nappy pins to the bemusement of my grandad who took me into town on Friday to spend it)

Moved on to Bunty- keeping the cut out dolls and clothes for years. The Four Marys I think were in Bunty.

I didn't have Misty, but occasionally got copies from my dad's workmate's kids. My friend had Mandy, Jinty (and Lindy) I moved on to Spellbound, followed by Patches, Blue Jeans (must have been a rip off of each other) and of course, the Queen of them all, Jackie.

Try that

EricCartmansGoatee · 03/01/2022 09:03

That works. Brilliant, thank you.

cungryhow · 03/01/2022 09:05

Twinkle was my first comic. I named my doll McGregor after Shona McGregor who I think lived on a farm with her dog. When I was about 10 (47 now) I think they rereleased old editions of Misty into a monthly edition so you got whole stories in one go.

Zonder · 03/01/2022 09:06

Was Misty the woo one? I had that and my cousin has Bunty - was that the one where you could cut out the doll on the back and some clothes to hang on it?
I also loved Cheeky Weekly which always had a joke back page so you could read it in class and not get into trouble, like a map of UK but deliberately wrong way round.

Which was the one that had stories about twin sisters who dressed like slave girls - was that in Mandy?

Mudday · 03/01/2022 09:08

Oooh chills!! Misty wouldn't get away with its properly weird storytelling and evocative artwork to such a young audience now I suspect! I remember some of the main characters of stories disappearing into a terrible ending full of absolute dread followed by darkly imaginative guesswork... No wonder I was more interested in Gillian Cross' 'Demon Headmaster' than Blyton's 'Famous Five'. Great stuff 😂

eleanorwish · 03/01/2022 09:08

How could I have forgotten Mandy! That was the one I bought weekly when I grew out of Twinkle!
I might have to spend some of my Christmas money on some comics. I used to have quite a collection but my mum 'encouraged' me to pass them on to my younger cousin

Zonder · 03/01/2022 09:09

I can't find Mandy in that comic list website.

Mudday · 03/01/2022 09:11

Did Misty have the story of 'The Weird Sisters'?

Mydogisagentleman · 03/01/2022 09:14

Misty!
I remember a story about a year girl who was a sin eater

LavenderAskew · 03/01/2022 09:23

I had Bunty reserved at the newsagent. One week I was 1p short and couldn't buy it and cried buckets in the newsagents!!

I can't remember if it qas because I couldn't get the comic or because I was embarrassed I hadn't bought the right money (I was a very nervous child terrified of getting into trouble.) Possibly a combination of both!!

SusannaQueen · 03/01/2022 09:25

Also remember a TV series comic/magazine called Look-in, and a film mag, think it was called Empire. Most of my pocket money/wage must have gone on mags and comics!

LavenderAskew · 03/01/2022 09:27

Oh meant to say (got distracted by my crying story) I used to get other comics too when I was feeling flush 😄 I've a feeling my dedication to Bunty wasn't that long either.

Do recall reading one that combined with another but don't remember the name of either (but do recall I was a bit miffed by it)

annymay · 03/01/2022 09:31

I had Twinkle then Mandy. I remember lots of stories about twins where one was evil and a series about a girl being coached in tennis by a woman that was a ghost.

TheSpiral · 03/01/2022 09:33

I was born mid 70s but my comic reading days were in the 80s - I was aware of Misty via annuals picked up at jumble sales, but my comic progression went:

Jack and Jill/ Playhour
My Little Pony/ Barbie
Nikki (which I think also had some "sinister stories", and quite a few poor Victorian orphan stories, as well as modern ones like The Comp)
Jackie
Smash Hits/ Just 17
NME

I used to be so excited to come back from holiday and find one or even two copies waiting on the doormat.

LavenderAskew · 03/01/2022 09:40

I remember the thrill of finding boxes of old comics at jumble sales.

user1493494961 · 03/01/2022 09:48

My daughter was a Twinkle fan, I think I still have a couple of copies and also a copy of Nikki, a comic from the mid 80s.

Craftycorvid · 03/01/2022 09:53

Loved Misty! Was so sad when it ended after a fairly short time. All the other girls’ comics were about bloody gymnasts and ponies and things I found immensely dull. Misty was properly subversive and Pagan. Delighted it’s alive and well on line.
