Anyone interested in a geeky discussion about 70s girls' comics, particularly Misty?

I managed to find a website which has the ENTIRE print run of Misty comic available to read for free. Have been being enthralled by it (even though a lot of it was just after my comic-loving years - as so many of the artists and writers were the ones who had contributed to Tammy and Jinty comics...)
I'm clearly one of the older MNers but I just wondered if anyone else wants a 70s-girls-comics chatter?

I'm 57 and used to get Twinkle every week as a little girl. I used to really look forward to it.

I moved on to Judy after that, but I don't remember Misty. I also collected the annuals for lots of the girls' comics, I'd pick them up cheaply second hand and I loved them. I can remember Mandy, Bunty and Diana, plus an even earlier one called Princess.

I moved on to Jackie at 12 or 13, I think.

I remember reading a story where humans were captured and kept in cages like animals in a zoo. The girl who was captured had a collar put around her neck that hurt her if she tried to escape. Was that in Misty? I think it was.

I loved Misty, my granny used to buy it for me. I once got an A* in an English lesson for totally ripping off a story from Misty about an antique shop. Our teacher had previously said never to copy stories because they "knew all the comics" Grin

There was a spin-off from Twinkle called Little Star, don't know if anybody else is old enough to remember it?

Schmoozer · 03/01/2022 00:47

If I remember correctly my fave comic was Tracey who had a budgie called Elton !

Bluesarestillblue · 03/01/2022 00:49

I’ve been thinking about twinkle lately. My old dolls need a bit of TLC and I was thinking what a great idea a dolls hospital would be

Wandaaa · 03/01/2022 01:00

I started reading it when it was Tammy and Misty, also read Tracy from it's first issue so I'm not sure which one the stories are from.
I remember Bella and a one called gymkhana which I had no clue how to pronounce, there was a girl called Shona which I also didn't know how to pronounce.
I remember a story about a girl who had been 'lost' as a young child and two sets of parents were claiming her, she ended up being the daughter of a third set of parents that weren't introduced until the final episode. The daughter called squirrels squiggles which was how her parent's knew she was there's. I started to say squiggles and bizarrely I still call them that now, so Dbro if you're reading, hi.

Feelingoood · 03/01/2022 01:02

Oh thank you for this! I have been trying to track down old comics for years, I wish I hadn’t moved house as a kid! I had all the minty and Lindy ones in order and would re read and loved the artwork.
Brother and I still laugh about one strip where the girl had no mum and no money but managed to make the eggs go further by scrambling them with water, which impressed the dad no end!
Also another one ( Jackie maybe) where the final frame was of her saying,’ and then we drove around deserted london in his sports car’
WISH I still had them! Lost enthusiasm with photo stories. It was the drawings that were so cool.

Misty was fabulous and DH bought me an annual from EBay as a surprise birthday gift a couple of years ago.

SusannaQueen · 03/01/2022 01:06

I can't remember Misty, which is odd as I read so many comics, looked at the website and it rings no bells. I'm 52 and started out with Twinkle, then Beano and Dandy, Tammy and various Marvel - I was obsessed with catwoman for a while, then Jackie and Just17.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 03/01/2022 01:13

I was obsessed with Misty and still have a couple of annuals. So please can you check your link as it doesn't work for me.

SusannaQueen · 03/01/2022 01:28

@alwayscrashinginthesamecar1

Click go home on the 404 page, then put Misty into the websites search box.

SwedishEdith · 03/01/2022 01:38

I don't remember Misty at all either but did love Nurse Nancy in Twinkle. Bunty was the one with the cut out doll and paper clothes with fold over tabs. Did is also have a sketch of a pop star as opposed to an actual photo? I cut out the sketch of David Cassidy and mounted it in an aluminium pie tray for my wall Grin.

StopStartStop · 03/01/2022 01:57

Sunny Stories.

Redglitter · 03/01/2022 02:06

I loved Misty & Tracey oh & Mandy

I'd love to re read them

FlosCampi · 03/01/2022 02:15

Oh yes @Usernamenotavailabletryanother! The girl in Misty with a moon birthmark, I remember her, with a shiny dark bobbed haircut. Did the moon give her psychic powers?

Flavabobble · 03/01/2022 02:23

Thank you so much for that link! (And whoever said about the 404 tip) I was obsessing the other week about the Misty comic and searching online, and could only find the covers.
I started getting it from issue 3 - after Spellbound had stopped. Carried on until and after it merged with Jinty or Tammy.
I read several different comics over my childhood, Bunty, Krazy, and Cheeky Weekly, but Misty was my favourite. Some of the stories were quite disturbing but the artwork was absolutely stunning.

TansySorrel · 03/01/2022 02:24

I absolutely loved Tracy comic. I remember a story called Heather's Hateful Hands about a girl who visited a castle on a school trip and put her hands in the handprints of a witch who'd been imprisoned there and her hands then became possessed by the witch who made her do nasty things like cut someone's hair horribly. I'm 50. I also liked Judy annual. I remember Misty, Twinkle, Jinty, Judy, Twinkle, Bunty. I moved onto Jackie later. My sister got Patches. Also Just 17

TansySorrel · 03/01/2022 02:25

Also like Beano and Whizzer and Chips and Dandy

Schmoozer · 03/01/2022 02:26

I used to love the 4 Mary’s !! 🤣🤣

AmberLynn1536 · 03/01/2022 02:30

I absolutely loved Misty! It was really dark! The stories that I remember are ‘The Sentinals’ and iirc ‘The four faces of Eve’. I so wish I had the comics now, they were pure art and so different compared to other cheesy girl comics, I was gutted when it became Tammy and Misty, the darkness was gone, loved the album’s, Miss Voor the evil headmistress anyone?

UniversalAunt · 03/01/2022 04:23

Overwhelmed with instant nostalgia here.

Bunty, Mandy, Diana, Judy…& Twinkle.

I remember the first issue of Twinkle, it came with a little plastic ring.

UniversalAunt · 03/01/2022 04:27

…& of course, Beano, Dandy, Topper & Whizzer.

Monty27 · 03/01/2022 04:36

Great thread OP. I'm smiling from ear to ear. Our weekend treat was comics. I'm from a big family we probably had one of all of the above.
Bunty dressy doll thing really frustrated me or was that another one. Twinkle became twinkle and little star at some point which is when I felt much too grown up for it 😃😃😃🤣
We had Hotspur and Victor that my DBs liked and Beezer Beano and Topper which were non gender identities I felt even at that age.
Halcyon days 🥰

Haggisfish3 · 03/01/2022 04:41

I loved misty, too! And lots of the others mentioned here. I went to the website and searched for misty. mycomiclist.com/
