Mistaken acronyms. Mine is CBT.

Bit embarrassing but here goes..
Whenever I see the acronym cbt I immediately think ‘cock and ball torture.’ The acronym is used a lot on here, but for some reason my brain doesn’t associate it with cognitive behavioural therapy. It makes me laugh at some of the threads when cbt is advised though!
Anyone else associate an acronym with a less common or funny meaning?

CBT also stands for Compulsory Basic Training, which you have to do if you want to ride a motorbike.

mjf981 · 03/01/2022 06:25

And 78 others according to freedictionary! Yes, I'm bored..

We had a Short Term Follow Up clinic at the hospital which abbreviated it to the STFU, which definitely means something else to me!!

Sunnysidegold · 03/01/2022 07:27

Oh no! Now when I read that I'm only going to see Cock and Ball Torture!!

GoodnightGrandma · 03/01/2022 07:30

LFT always used to be liver function test for me. Now it something different.
And there’s a person near me with a private reg of NSU, which is an STD to me !

I used to work at a rural vets. We had medical acronyms for everything. My favourite was HBT - hit by tractor!

I always read Cost benefit analysis as Can't be arsed.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/01/2022 09:31

DH sometimes fills me in (or let's off steam) so I know a bit about the goings on in his office.
For months I thought he had a colleague called Cos. It fitted in with the other nicknames etc....

Apparently Cos is Chief of Staff...

ImInStealthMode · 03/01/2022 09:33

Now I working in marketing I see ROI all the time. To me it's Republic or Ireland, not Return On Investment Confused

ImInStealthMode · 03/01/2022 09:33

*of Ireland obviously

Magnited · 03/01/2022 09:37

IIRC - I always think Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Corps

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 03/01/2022 09:37

PR is 'per rectum' to me as a Dr
I do realise that it's 'public relations' to a lot of people but it will always mean finger up the bum to me.

Firefliess · 03/01/2022 09:42

I do feel a bit sorry for the Oxford academics and graduates of their PPE course. PPE meant their politics, philosophy and economics degree program to me and many others until covid came. Now everyone must think they have degrees in using masks and rubber gloves!

CaMePlaitPas · 03/01/2022 09:46

When I was in France I saw that they have a benefit you can apply for called ASS, I think it stands for allocation solidaritié specifique or something like that! It made me laugh when I once received an email telling me to make an "ASS declaration" Grin

CovidPassQuestion · 03/01/2022 09:47

On here it's hard to tell when people are using BPD for Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder. (I use it for the first, don't know anyone with the second)

wankywomble · 03/01/2022 09:52

I'm a social worker so always assume SW means this. Get really confused when friends comment after Christmas they are 'getting back on SW' which to them is Slimming World.

Tricked2003 · 03/01/2022 09:54

Many years ago when nursing (early 80s) the ward I worked on used to write DOA ...to mean date of admission under the patient name.........until one patient mistook it for Dead on Arrival!!!!

sashh · 03/01/2022 09:57

I think motorbike training too.

Many years ago I worked in cardiology so lots of initials mean things to me that they don't to others.

MelonTits · 03/01/2022 09:58

MSM for mainstream media. I used to work in sexual health and it is used there to refer to men who have sex with men (rather than using “gay”, which a lot of people who undertake risky sexual activity don’t identify as)

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 03/01/2022 10:05

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks of CBT in that way.

Crankley · 03/01/2022 10:07

Whenever I see FWB (Friend With Benefits) I hear in my head 'Fuck Wit Buddy'. Obviously there's no such word as 'Wit' but it doesn't stop me thinking it.

TopTabby · 03/01/2022 10:07

This reminds me of a very sweary friend who used to call Terms & Conditions 'twats & c*nts'.
Can't see T&Cs without seeing it even now & it was 20+ years ago!

WhenwillIlearntoadult · 03/01/2022 10:15

@DropYourSword

We had a Short Term Follow Up clinic at the hospital which abbreviated it to the STFU, which definitely means something else to me!!
Thinking about this at work would give me much amusement!
doodlejump1980 · 03/01/2022 10:17

My friend (police officer) demanded a meeting with his child’s school when said child was made a JRSO a Junior Road Safety Officer. In police terms, it means a Juvenile Registered Sex Offender!!

Borgonzola · 03/01/2022 10:18

When I first saw STBXH on here I thought it was 'shoot the bastard ex husband' and wondered why some people were using it even when describing their ex as a reasonable person BlushGrin
