Mistaken acronyms. Mine is CBT.

Bit embarrassing but here goes..
Whenever I see the acronym cbt I immediately think ‘cock and ball torture.’ The acronym is used a lot on here, but for some reason my brain doesn’t associate it with cognitive behavioural therapy. It makes me laugh at some of the threads when cbt is advised though!
Anyone else associate an acronym with a less common or funny meaning?

@Crankley

Whenever I see FWB (Friend With Benefits) I hear in my head 'Fuck Wit Buddy'. Obviously there's no such word as 'Wit' but it doesn't stop me thinking it.
Your wits are your brains- a fuckwit is an actual thing- an insult for someone acting stupidly or irrationally, so a fuckwit buddy would be your friend acting like an idiot...

BAAPS British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons always makes me smile.
I told my niece that B&M stood for bums and minnies to the disgust of my DM.

@CovidPassQuestion

On here it's hard to tell when people are using BPD for Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder. (I use it for the first, don't know anyone with the second)
Omg, this. I have bipolar and never say BPD because it’s more often used for borderline personality disorder in my experience. But on MN I can never be sure.

After months of reading about LFTs here they are finally becoming an option here but they call them RATs (rapid antigen tests) and i feel like someone is shouting ‘RATS’ every time I see it written.

TeachesOfPeaches · 03/01/2022 10:31

When I see CBT I think cognitive behaviour therapy.

Nathlash · 03/01/2022 10:32

NCT in Ireland is nothing to do with birth or babies, it’s the National Car Test, the equivalent of the MOT. Which mildly baffled my family when I had DS in London, as I was a non-driver who appeared to be subjecting herself to weekend-long vehicle tests when very pregnant.

@Borgonzola

When I first saw STBXH on here I thought it was 'shoot the bastard ex husband' and wondered why some people were using it even when describing their ex as a reasonable person BlushGrin
Me too! I still read it as that.
Smorgasborb · 03/01/2022 10:37

CBT to me is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Computer Based Training.

Lizzy1980 · 03/01/2022 10:40

I used to volunteer at an animal charity years ago. On some of the dogs files I would see DMITO scribbled in tiny writing. It was usually dogs that had been seized from hoarding situations/rescued from neglect or cruelty cases. I never knew what it stood for until another volunteer finally enlightened me. Dog More Intelligent Than Owner! The condition some of those poor dogs were in I had to agree

Smorgasborb · 03/01/2022 10:40

I used to think LOL in text speak meant 'Lots of love'.

I think I read here that someone's Mum did too and sent a text that read "Uncle Simon is dead. LOL"

StormyCornishSeas · 03/01/2022 10:40

@wankywomble

I'm a social worker so always assume SW means this. Get really confused when friends comment after Christmas they are 'getting back on SW' which to them is Slimming World.
SW to me is South West. Those Slimming World Threads I always thought were the south west division for it
ExtremelyDetermined · 03/01/2022 10:45

PPE has always meant gloves and masks to me as I've always worked in an environment that requires them. It's only more recently that I've heard it for Oxford academics.

CBT is Computer Based Training to me.

I used to work on a project named BMP at work many years ago. There's a project where I work now also called BMP but it's something completely different and I can never remember for the life of me what it stands for, the previous one has stayed out firmly in my head.

Pucarbuile · 03/01/2022 10:46

I uses to work in finance lending and when we would be doing the application to the underwriters we would include information on the borrowers Short Term Debts. It took me ages to work out why sexual health was relevant.

Redcrayons · 03/01/2022 11:06

CBT is computer based training. I was quite surprised my sister was doing it as treatment for her MH condition.

I used to work somewhere with 4 Daves. The big boss was just Dave but the others were DC, DT, and DH.

I thought it meant ‘son of the bitch ex husband’.
PowerhouseOfTheCell · 03/01/2022 11:09

Always thought GC stood for Gemma Collins so was very confused when threads such as ‘how can I tell my workplace I’m GC’ would pop up Confused always thought it was going to be so awkward to announce to your whole workplace you thought you were Gemma Collins

Omicrone · 03/01/2022 11:12

If you have been a teacher in the last 15 years or so you will know all about G and T Smile (Although I don't think its used any more is it?)

OublietteBravo · 03/01/2022 11:14

PCR means post consumer recycled to me. Which is a little confusing in covid times. Although I doubt many people know what PCR stands for in regard to covid testing (polymerase chain reaction in case you’re wondering).

EdithGrantham · 03/01/2022 11:18

@Omicrone yep G&T still used, think WALT, WILF and WAGOLL have gone though. My DH works in a prison and they can put prisoners on an IEP, can't remember what it stands for in his case but don't think it's as nurturing as an Individual Education Plan

Andtheyalllookjustthesame · 03/01/2022 11:18

I thought it was son of the bitch ex husband too, even though it doesn't quite scan but I prefer shoot the bastard ex husband. Grin

I read DH and Dp as Dreadful husband instead of dear a lot because otherwise on 99% of threads on here it does make sense as they are all truly horrible spouses

Fatgalslim · 03/01/2022 11:20

I work in construction so whenever I see PPE it means hard hat, hi vis vest, boots and gloves

Andtheyalllookjustthesame · 03/01/2022 11:20

I've had some lols 😂 at people who thought lol was lots of love 💕 not laugh out loud and have thus laughed at people unknowingly in various situations when it would be utterly unsuitable

OublietteBravo · 03/01/2022 11:21

Surely PPE is philosophy, politics and economics!

What does GC mean in this context?
Vapeyvapevape · 03/01/2022 11:26

I thought patients were being called (SOB) Son of a bitch - Short of breath
