On BBC1 just now. Is there a more perfect film?? It has a bit of everything - catchy musical numbers, political tension, big houses, gorgeous costumes, romance and Nazis and nuns Grin

Anyone else a fan?

Love it.

What is the Captain/Dad's name though? Can never quite catch it.

Andylion · 01/01/2022 18:00

Georg.

Maria was definitely batting above her average with Barin Avon Trapp, he’s gorgeous!

@WhatIsAWeekday

Love it. One of my all time favourites. Christopher Plummer was so handsome in it too, as Capt Von Trapp.
I agree
CatWithARabbit · 01/01/2022 18:20

Love it ! Must have watched it about 40 times between tv and dvd😂

Legoninjago1 · 01/01/2022 18:23

Love it too!

PizzasPlease · 01/01/2022 18:29

@Andylion

Georg.
Thank you
SophieJo · 01/01/2022 18:46

Loved it. Sang along - quietly-to all the songs and knew the script off by heart. Even my husband watched it with me!

KillingMeDeftly · 01/01/2022 18:51

@Bluebluemoon

Not wanting to spoil things but did you know the real Maria actually confessed that she didn't love or feel attracted to the captain at all when he asked her to marry him? But that she actually married him because she loved the children and was also encouraged by the nuns to marry him as they felt it was Gods will!

She said it was only later that she grew to love him.

To be fair, the real Captain was no Christopher Plummer...

Love it!

I also love French and Saunders piss take, very funny 😂

Clawdy · 01/01/2022 18:52

I went to see it when it first came out, and always remember the moment Maria breaks into the opening song "The hills are alive...." So lovely.

KillingMeDeftly · 01/01/2022 18:55

I ultimately felt quite sorry for the Baroness as I think she really was in love with the Captain. Her final scene with him on the balcony is really touching.

And Rolf's character was changed in a fairly dramatic way in the film. In the stage musical he lies to his commanding officer at the end, and allows the Von Trapps to escape.

Riverlee · 01/01/2022 18:55

Probably the film I have watched the most often.

I’ve quite enjoyed the Sound of Music live versions also, both the British and US versions.

Also, saw it in West aEnd many moons ago, with Petula Clark.

bendmeoverbackwards · 01/01/2022 18:58

@Riverlee was that at the Victoria Palace in the 80s? Think I saw it too.

RonniePickering · 01/01/2022 19:00

One of my favourites ❤️

Riverlee · 01/01/2022 19:01

@bendmeoverbackwards

Don’t remember the theatre, but definantly in the 80s.

ancientgran · 01/01/2022 19:03

I watched it years ago when it first came out. Watched it again today and enjoyed it but I couldn't stop crying when they escaped. I kept thinking of all the people who didn't escape. Not sure what brought that on.

TawnyPippit · 01/01/2022 19:05

Aww, I’ve always loved it and my DD did it as her Y6 play, so we watched the film a zillion times that term and all of the family were word perfect. It was just brilliant. Then in their final assembly the Y6 children came in singing “So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Adieu” and all the parents were properly sobbing.

SalveVagina · 01/01/2022 19:06

I love love love love it. I had to cover my eyes when the Nazis were looking for them in the nunnery, even though I've seen it a million times.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 01/01/2022 19:15

@Snuzzle

I’m watching too, can’t resist it. It’s my ultimate feel good film and I think it’s aged really well My sister and I once watched it every day of the school holidays, that’s how much we love it Grin
Are you my sister?? We used to do this too!!!
itsgettingweird · 01/01/2022 19:17

I love the bit when Maria returns and Greta shows her her poorly finger.

"It got caught"

"Where"

"In Fredericks teeth" 🤣🤣

ancientgran · 01/01/2022 19:18

I read Maria's book when I was a teenager. From what I remember the reality wasn't very like the film. They didn't escape over the mountains for example, I think they caught a train to Italy. The timeline was wrong as well, I think they married in the 1920s not the 30s. Makes you wonder why they didn't just make up a story.

ancientgran · 01/01/2022 19:19

And Georg wasn't anything like the Captain in the film.

Flowertailbird · 01/01/2022 19:22

Maria's wedding dress is just beautiful !
