On BBC1 just now. Is there a more perfect film?? It has a bit of everything - catchy musical numbers, political tension, big houses, gorgeous costumes, romance and Nazis and nuns Grin

Anyone else a fan?

I went with my mum and grandma when I was 5 years old the year it came out. I remember sitting in the cinema and being transfixed by the whole event - it makes mehappy and reminds me of my mum

MissHoney85 · 01/01/2022 19:33

I love it and know every word. My mum loves it too, we went to the sing-a-long several times when I was younger and after I started my first job I took her on holiday to Salzburg. My DD was born last December and I watched it last New Year in a newborn haze. I often sing the songs to my DD over dinner or in the bath and can't wait to share it with her in a few years ❤️ (she'll probably hate it now!)

ThePontiacBandit · 01/01/2022 19:42

My favourite film of all time. I honestly have no idea how many times I’ve watched it but I’d estimate at least 50 times. I even done the tour in Salzburg! That was awesome and I highly recommend it. They take you to the church where they filmed the wedding, show you the outside of the house, the gazebo…then you go to a café and then on the coach they play the soundtrack as you sing along.

When I tried my wedding dress on, it had a long train. They lady in the shop said “You know, because this skirt is plain at the back (it had lots of detail in the front) you can get away with a full length veil.” I tried it on and said “ I look like Maria from The Sound of Music!”. Showed my sister next time I tried it on and guess what she said? “You look like Maria from The Sound of Music”. Loved it Grin

I watched a documentary on the real family a number of years ago. It seems the Captain was the kind and loving parent while Maria was the disciplinarian.

Whitecushion · 01/01/2022 20:23

He did use a whistle though as their grounds were so large. They all had a different signal. We went to the little museum in Salzburg and they said the real family used to laugh as if they had actually escaped over those mountains they would have walked into Hitlers bunker not to safety. They went by train.
I still love the film though and prefer
that imaginative version of events!

Squeekyturtle · 01/01/2022 21:14

Does anyone else think the bit where Maria and the captain are dancing the Ländler (sp?) together, one of the most erotic scenes ever

Yes because the acting is so good and therefore can be so subtle ! If that was shot today he'd have to have his tongue down her throat so audiences would understand the lurve !!! Same with the later scene where he declares his love ! Pure class 😍

RonniePickering · 01/01/2022 21:20

Aah yes, the dance scene where one of the children points out to Maria that she is blushing ☺️

Strokethefurrywall · 01/01/2022 21:29

I grew up on this movie - apparently it was the only thing I would sit still for and watch for 3 hours straight, my mum used it as a babysitter!
Everything about it is pure nostalgia, and honestly I’ve never wanted a dress more than Liesl’s when she danced with Rolf in the summer house 😍

Bollocks2Covid · 01/01/2022 22:36

Wasn’t Captain Von Trapp gorgeous though?

RonniePickering · 01/01/2022 22:43

He absolutely was 😍

VenusClapTrap · 01/01/2022 23:07

Dh won’t watch it and complains vociferously if I suggest to the dc they might like to watch it. He finds the idea of a musical about nazis in very poor taste. He’s from a country that was occupied though, and can be a bit funny about anything Austrian or German.

muldersspeedos · 01/01/2022 23:53

The way he masterfully throws back the doors when Maria is having a look round makes my pulse skip. It's hard to decide which scene is my favourite but I love it when she spins towards the door signing my favourite things and there he is and she brazens it out by saying hello as though everything was perfectly normal. The scene where they all fall out of the boat in excitement. The Laedler dance 🥰. Eidelweiss. The looks that pass between them. So romantic and nothing sexual at all in the film. I watched it in labour with the dc and sang along happily on my ball. It's a very emotional film in many ways and takes you through a range of emotions. Wonderful.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 01/01/2022 23:57

I had it on VHS as a child, and I watched it, or parts of it, almost every day for a long time. I was completely obsessed.

LikeAbatOutOfHell · 02/01/2022 00:07

My Saturday/holiday job when I was 14 was an usherette at our small town cinema, we had the Sound of Music there when I was working, not sure when, could have been a 2nd time round as popular films used to do that.

By the time we had seen everyone in, hoovered the front of house, cleaned the toilets, restocked the kiosk with sweets and sold ice creams in the interval it was up to the wedding bit before we could stand at the back and watch so that's the scene I love the most.

I'm in my 60s now and can't begin to work out how many times I've watched it since. And, yes, I watched it yesterday

I’ve been thinking about Captain VT as a result of this thread (as you do…) and wonder what advice MN would give Maria if she posted about him - ‘I’ve fallen for a distant, controlling widower much older than me who uses a dog whistle to summon his children and who is engaged to another woman. He’s very handsome, very rich and has a lovely house, and whilst there are occasional tiny glimpses of kindness he’s aloof and rather full of his own self importance. I have a strong faith, he absolutely doesn’t. He’s not a Nazi sympathiser which I suppose is good, but I don’t know whether to pursue this relationship. What do you think?’

I suspect she’d be told to run for those hills without stopping to sing about them Grin

llantwitminor · 02/01/2022 14:27

My mum had the soundtrack album, I probably even now know all the words. One of her favourite things no doubt.

PerkingFaintly · 02/01/2022 15:10

I have been layodelay-ing to myself today. And the street.

Designed to carry, that one.Grin

Bagadverts · 02/01/2022 15:24

I don’t mind the songs, but don’t love it like a dud My Fair Lady.

It's brilliant. I went to singalong SOM in London once. We all dressed up. One of my mates went as a mountain Grin

Fabulous film

Covid has got me, at the VT I immediately thought of Jonathan Van Tam. There is no hope for me.

Anyone watching this year?

Somethingsnappy · 27/12/2023 20:41

itsgettingweird · 01/01/2022 19:17

I love the bit when Maria returns and Greta shows her her poorly finger.

"It got caught"

"Where"

"In Fredericks teeth" 🤣🤣

Is it teeth?? All the countless times I've seen it, and I always thought she said 'tea'! Now I'm doubting myself. 😁
Can anyone else confirm which it is?!
Teeth does admittedly make more sense!

lews · 27/12/2023 20:55

Me too @Somethingsnappy I always thought it was tea and I've watched it many times!
