On BBC1 just now. Is there a more perfect film?? It has a bit of everything - catchy musical numbers, political tension, big houses, gorgeous costumes, romance and Nazis and nuns Grin

Anyone else a fan?

She did NOT love him “the first time he blew that silly whistle” - she thought he was an uptight pompous twat! Grin

I love the car sabotaging nuns.

TheGlobesTheThing · 01/01/2022 17:08

'for' not 'foe' 😀

middleager · 01/01/2022 17:08
@middleager this is probably vv outing but one of my most memorable musical theatre experiences was watching Cabaret in Germany, in German. I suspect I was the only non-German in the audience. Incredible experience.
I can only imagine how powerful that would have been. It's my favourite musical.

@SirChenjins

Does anyone else think the bit where Maria and the captain are dancing the Ländler (sp?) together, one of the most erotic scenes ever

I’ve never thought of it as erotic Grin

What? Not when you suddenly see the realisation of intense physical attraction? A scene doesn’t need bare flesh to be erotic!
sansucre · 01/01/2022 17:09

@uns54

My favourite ever film moment is when she walks down the aisle to meet him. It give me goosebumps every time and I don't think you will ever find two more gorgeous leads that what they are at that moment.
That's my favourite bit too
ellyanna · 01/01/2022 17:12

I love it. My absolute favourite film.

Bluebluemoon · 01/01/2022 17:13

Not wanting to spoil things but did you know the real Maria actually confessed that she didn't love or feel attracted to the captain at all when he asked her to marry him? But that she actually married him because she loved the children and was also encouraged by the nuns to marry him as they felt it was Gods will!

She said it was only later that she grew to love him.

PerkingFaintly · 01/01/2022 17:13

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Here's that wee bastard Rolf. Angry The scene where the Captain rips up the swastika is up there with the singing of the Marseillaise in Casablanca.
I was thinking of that scene as the audience joined in with Edelweiss.
itsgettingweird · 01/01/2022 17:15

Also just enjoyed watching it.

It's one of those films you just know so well there's no need to concentrate and can just sit back, relax and enjoy!

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 01/01/2022 17:20

I adore her wedding dress and long veil. They're just gorgeous.

Not erotic, no. Deeply moving, intensely romantic, that moment when your heart feels like it’s going to burst out of your chest, when you feel like you can’t breathe, when you realise that you completely and utterly love that person standing in front of you - yes. But not erotic. It’s far more than just a physical attraction.

Otoh, it’s also the Sound of Mucus, to quote Mr Plummer Grin

Abracadabra12345 · 01/01/2022 17:26

My DH can’t bear Sound of Music and was shocked when I told him, early on in our relationship, that it was my all time favourite film. I suggested to my AS that he watch it ahead of a trip to Salzburg and my DH was smugly sure that he’d hate it too. Son didn’t - he loved it, went on a Sound of Music tour there, the lot.

The book Maria wrote is good and she indicated a physical attraction for the Captain when he took hold of her hand and she looked into his eyes early on. She told Christopher Plummer that he was “nearly” as handsome as her husband! She was also very much the driving force in the marriage and family. And she really was a troublesome nun!

Vickles20 · 01/01/2022 17:27

Oh yes!! Me too!! I’m giddy with excitement as I’m playing the Mother Abbess in the stage version in April!!

Abracadabra12345 · 01/01/2022 17:29

I love the scene when the children are sadly singing “My Favourite Things” in the second part of the film to try and cheer themselves up, and become aware of Maria’s voice joining in. Happy tears moment!

I’m always worried the nazis will work out it was them and punish them.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/01/2022 17:33

Yes! So am I.

Whitecushion · 01/01/2022 17:39

I saw it as a child. The wedding on the huge cinema screen has stayed with me forever!

WhatAHexIGotInto · 01/01/2022 17:41

Me too! I love everything about it. X

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/01/2022 17:46

I said she was a bitch, but she's just said to the Captain that somewhere out there is a young woman who will never be a nun. I forgive you, Baroness!

needmoreshinys · 01/01/2022 17:47

I think I am one of the few people never to have seen it and every year I think I am going to watch it this year and for the last few years I have only remembered its on because someone has done a thread on here.

Maybe next year

Cosyclothes · 01/01/2022 17:48

It’s my favourite too!! So much so that I had the massive long veil at my wedding because of that wedding scene! Our first baby is due soon and her middle name is going to be Louisa too ❤️

maddiemookins16mum · 01/01/2022 17:48

Is it wrong I know every line from this film?
I also wanted the wedding entrance music when I got married.

SweetestThing · 01/01/2022 17:50

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Second film I ever saw in the cinema. First was Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews was a formative influence!
Same here! I used to visit my grandma every summer holiday and our special treat was to go to the cinema, just us, no pesky brothers allowed. Mary Poppins, TSOM and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Always loved Julie Andrews - what a voice!

Salzburg well worth a visit to see where much of it was filmed. Before they closed it off to tourists, DH and I recreated (very badly!) the do-re-mi scene on the steps.

Andylion · 01/01/2022 17:54

This is one of my favourite things.

Baroness is excellent ... she had that one line that went well over my head as a child, with Capt von Trapp enjoying the attention and stringing her along:

Elsa:
My dear, is there anything you can't do?

Maria:
Well, I'm not sure I'll make a very good nun.

Elsa:
Oh, if you have any problems, I'd be happy to help you.
