What jobs would put you off a new partner ?

Raonbowwatermelon · 30/12/2021 13:35

Lighthearted and not meant to offend.

My friend's neighbour has recently asked her out. He's lovely.

But....he works as a funeral director and my friend says she finds this so , so off putting.

This kind of reminded me of an ex boyfriend who dumped me when I went for an interview as aa trainee dental nurse, ( he had a complete phobia of the dentist). I didn't get the job anyway...

But it got me thinking , are there any jobs that would be a hard no from you from prospective partners:

Think I would struggle with Tory MP, Boarder force or bailiff tbh.

Humour me, self isolating and bored, ( and also want to persuade my friend that her neighbors job really isn't that bad...)

@dworky

Other than anything exploiting women, children or the vulnerable, nothing. What people do to make a living is not any indication of the person they are.
I think it is sometimes. There's a difference I think in taking any job you need to to make ends meet, that's understandable. But some people who train for a long time to do certain jobs must have a passion for that line of work.

I worked in a call centre doing outbound sales, it was either that or be on benefits, but I moved to a different job as soon as the opportunity arose because I just didn't have the personality for sales, you need to be very confident and pushy.

@WonderfulYou

Why do people say they wouldn’t marry a teacher?

I’m a teacher and was thinking of trying OLD, now I’m not so sure I should disclose my profession Blush

Maybe not being able to take holidays in term time? It costs a fortune to go away in school holidays.
Exhausteddog · 30/12/2021 14:27

Anything that would make hair or clothes smell strongly
Butcher
Fishmonger
Possibly crisp factory
Fish and chip shop/takeaway
Not anything about the type of person but I'd find the smell off putting.

Skeumorph · 30/12/2021 14:28

The abusive aggressive arsehole farm aka our police force.

Army.

On a lesser scale, bullshit jobs - from management consultant down

Player20868 · 30/12/2021 14:29

Tory MP. Not that they'd ever deign to even acknowledge my existence. ;)

Estate agent.

Most journalists.

Most police officers.

Influencer. (Though again, as I'm old enough to be the granny of most of them, it wouldn't happen anyway.)

Anyone in a profession where the only aim was making shedloads of money just so they could sit and gloat over it.

QuestionableMouse · 30/12/2021 14:30

Anything with fish. I dated a wet fish delivery driver and the smell lingers.

RoyalFamilyFan · 30/12/2021 14:30

Pimp
Drug dealer
Porn star
Dolphin trainer
Bailiff

CannotShakeIt · 30/12/2021 14:34

Military and police.

DevonSunsets · 30/12/2021 14:35

Chip shop worker - from experience. The hot oil smell stays on the skin, hair, clothes and permeates living spaces regardless of the number of showers/ cleaning.

My houseshare dated a truly lovely man who worked at one - as the hours worked perfectly round his uni course. She called it off as the smell just got to much for her.

She tried so hard as he was great and once his course was done he would be finishing at the shop. In the end it was too much waiting the year out and she ended it.

@NiceTwin

None. A person's job does not define them.
Are you kidding!!
5thnonblonde · 30/12/2021 14:36

I wouldn’t date a pimp either but it’s not like you meet these ppl at parties 😂 ‘Oh do meet Colin- he’s doing fabulous work recruiting these darling young things and showing them how to give the most exhilarating blow jobs you’ve ever known!’

WonderfulYou · 30/12/2021 14:36

Maybe not being able to take holidays in term time? It costs a fortune to go away in school holidays.

Oh yes that’s true.

HippyMoon · 30/12/2021 14:37

Police, army, tory MP are my big three.

DP wants to retrain as a firefighter and I'm slightly terrified for her, not going to lie!

ImustLearn2Cook · 30/12/2021 14:38

Any job that has violence, aggression, danger, extreme high stress, shift worker (been there done that and it can be disruptive to your own sleep and being able to see each other), salesperson working for commission or a pyramid scheme (I ended a friendship with someone who married someone selling Amway products because every time I saw them they tried to sell me Amway and wouldn’t take no for an answer), religious leader, psychologist, sex industry like porn or prostitution, politician.

Itsnotdeep · 30/12/2021 14:43

Oh I'm very choosy now (not currently dating).

I think I will avoid lawyers from now on. I also wouldn't go out with anyone in the police or army. Probably wouldn't go out with a dentist either, or a psychotherapist.

In hindsight, I have no idea why I thought I would get on with someone who worked for an arms manufacturer when I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum from that job and political view wise.

To a pp, I don't see that it's shallow to restrict yourself job-wise. I would hesitate to match with anyone without a degree. I would prefer to go out with someone who earns well.

I heard that airline pilots are generally unfaithful, so I don't swipe on them either.

When I do get back to online dating, I am thinking that I would like to go out with a doctor. Possibly an architect or barrister (left wing, not a corporate or tax barrister). Maybe someone in tv production or the media.

52andblue · 30/12/2021 14:44

I'd struggle to respect anyone who exploited anyone more vulnerable than them. That covers a wide gamut, from (many) MPs to (many) psychics. So, its more of a character assessment I'd need rather than blocking a whole profession although its true that many professions encourage the hardening of people & promote abusers sadly.

MarmiteyCrumpets · 30/12/2021 14:44

Anyone whose job involved killing or hurting animals or dealing with their butchered remains.

Estate agents.

Itsnotdeep · 30/12/2021 14:45

Last time I had a swipe, I did see Michael Gove on bumble! I swiped right to see if we would match - we didn't!

There was also an american porn star who apparently was visiting the area. I didn't swipe right on him.

chelle0 · 30/12/2021 14:48

Defence lawyer. How they can defend some of the most awful crimes and then get on with their lives is beyond me.

Enzbear · 30/12/2021 14:48

Anything with cruelty to animals or animal industry such as butcher.
Police
Other than that I would only be put off by someone who couldn't keep a job.

Fatherliamdeliverance · 30/12/2021 14:48

No way!! What did it say on his profile?
Lazydaisydaydream · 30/12/2021 14:49

I always thought I could never date a vicar but then I watched Fleabag WinkGrin

I couldn’t date a politician, or anyone in royal family.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 30/12/2021 14:49

@NiceTwin

None. A person's job does not define them.
Sure, that's why the incidence of sociopaths is so much higher in certain professions than in the general population (clergy, surgeons, armed forces...)
Dixiechickonhols · 30/12/2021 14:50

I think a funeral director would be a potential good partner they’d be compassionate, good at dealing with all types of people, kind.
Probably someone who was an influencer so everything on sm and you’d be sucked in so every meal out would be a freebie was and have to pose for photos whilst your meal goes cold.

Derbee · 30/12/2021 14:50

Bailiff, private parking clamper, bouncer etc. Basically any job where they use their size and look to intimidate people. Not my thing.

Anyone who is actively involved in cruel practices for animals. Eg works in an abattoir, transports animals for slaughter, etc. Works in a lab that uses animals etc etc.
