Eating our 10-a-day thread (2)

Breathmiller · 28/12/2021 22:51

Hi all

This is our second thread about upping our veg and fruit intake on a daily basis.

We tend to list what we've had to keep us accoubtable and generally chat about how to increase the rainbow on our plate.

We don't always make 10 but anything more than you would normally is great. I like to at least get 5. 10 or even sometimes more is a great day.

All welcome whatever reasons.

  1. Apple
  2. Pear and raspberry
  3. Avocado
  4. Tomato
  5. Broccoli
  6. Onions
  7. Peppers
  8. Carrots
  9. Tinned tomato sauce

I’m finding this thread really motivating. Hopefully by the end of the month it will have become a habit I don’t need to think about (adding more fruit / veg portions to meals)

youkiddingme · 07/01/2022 07:29

The thing about the nuts is interesting riotlady - I'll have to read that.
Me too snoopsnoggysnog

Just getting around to yesterday's to motivate me all up for today:

apple
lettuce
olives/grapes
radishes/cucumber
pepper
mango
pineapple
banana
courgette/butternut squash
onion/tomatoes/garlic
Cabbage

Pleased with the one.

Breathmiller · 07/01/2022 09:02

Such good lists. Well done everyone.

Mine was embarrassingly poor yesterday.

  1. Avocado
  2. Olives

Dinner was filled pasta and the filling was asparagus but how much of a portion is in doubt.

Onwards and upwards for today.

OP posts:
MaybeHeIsMyCat · 07/01/2022 09:21

Mine was poor too, probably 2 portions
Mixed veg stir fry (half a pack ready prepped)
Salad leaves, tomatoes and gherkins in a sandwich

hivemindneeded · 07/01/2022 09:33

Yesterday:
1.) carrot juice
2.) Endive salad
3.) aubergines
4.) spinach
5.) tomatoes
6.) tangerine

NewYearNewKale · 07/01/2022 11:49

Extra veg cooked last night made it an easy leftover brunch so far.
Yesterday's tally:
1 pear
2 tangerines
3 onion
4 swede, celeriac, pak choi
5 beetroot, red pepper
6 passata, mushrooms, carrot

I write it as servings. Yesterday I had a root veg soup which was onion, swede, celeriac. Then a tomato passata and onion based sauce which I had with roasted beetroot and red pepper. There was a bit of steamed pak choi shared out too. So a right hodge podge really but I was doing the cooking and was aware of quantities of ingredients.
If I'm not cooking I'd just judge a small bowl of soup as a portion, a veg based pasta sauce as a portion or 2 etc.

NewYearNewKale · 07/01/2022 11:53

One change I've made is putting double the onion in recipes than I used to, easy win 😂.

That's a good idea. When we have a roast dinner we each have a roasted whole onion. All caramelised and delicious.

My day's offerings are a little more respectable today.

  1. Avocado
  2. Salad leaves x 2
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Banana
  5. Apple
  6. Beetroot
  7. Celery
  8. Mushrooms
  9. Peppers
10. Asparagus

Whole avocado
Small tomato so not a full portion

Dried cinnamon pears

Sainsburys fruit pot counting as one a day - melon, strawberry and kewi

Leeks in my chicken and leek pie (maybe with the tomato earlier it would count as one)

Wildernesstips · 07/01/2022 22:12

  1. Baked beans
  2. orange juice
  3. Carrots and cucumber
  4. Pepper

Then I had McDonald’s for tea so none in that!

3.5yo DD (who has always been a fruit bat but not that big on veg) has started having cucumber sticks with hummus with me, which is lovely.

Broad beens
Green beans
Olives
Sultanas
Broccoli
Avocado

Love reading everyone's lists - I wonder how many of us are vegan?

@riotlady if you like Dr Greger, he also has an app called the Daily Dozen which is useful for keeping you nutritionally balanced.

Daisiesandsweetpeas · 08/01/2022 08:14

Hi, can I join? My diet it pretty decent but could definitely increase veg intake, especially as it's meant to be beneficial for some health issues I have.
Question: are things like potatoes, baked beans, orange juice considered part of the daily consumption?

Yesterday I had:
Big pile of blueberries with porridge
Banana
Half an orange (tbf, it was from my greengrocers and massive!)
Cauliflower
Green beans

(I also had a small glass of orange juice and potato but not sure if they're included)

Daisiesandsweetpeas · 08/01/2022 08:16

Also onion as part of a traybake

Breathmiller · 08/01/2022 10:03

Welcome daisiesandsweetpeas
I do eat fairly well (vegan here) and have always enjoyed veg but I do tend to over eat crap as well. The idea for me was to up my veg and fruit intake so that I'm too full for the crap. With varying degrees of success I have to admit. But after decades of disordered eating I decided to do this to focus on what I can eat rather than what I should be limiting.

Potatoes don't count I'm afraid but baked beans do. (Sweet potatoes do though and I tend to have them as chips now). Juice counts but only once. So 150ml is one portion but so is 300 regardless if it's two different kinds.

Lentils count as do one the favourites on here, chickpeas, so houmous and carrot/celery sticks is a staple here. Extra brownie points I always think if it's home made. I count 2 portions of these a day as the guidance is 1 for 5 a day.

There is a link on page 1 to the portion sizes according to the 5 a day NHS guide that some of us go by. Or you can think 80g is a portion.
If that all feels too complicated then think about getting 10 different varieties a day and focus less on portion sizes.
Anything goes really. We're all doing it slightly differently. As long as we are upping our veg and fruit levels then it's all good.

30g of dried fruit count as a portion, so that makes eating up the Christmas cake good Hmm

I'm sort of a demi vegan or demi pescatarian, maybe the archetypal flexitarian . I have a dairy and soy allergy, don't eat meat, do eggs 2 or 3 times a week and maybe a portion of fish about 5 or 6 times a month.
Love veggies and so so about fruit.

Breathmiller · 08/01/2022 14:50

Yes postdated Christmas cake should definitely be in there. I decided my Christmas pudding was a portion Grin
