Any fans of rock music of the Led Zep era please help - DP's funeral

DP died suddenly last Monday. It's awful. He loved rock music of the late 60s/70s but he never had a favourite, he just loved the genre. What John Peel called 'the music of your life' - what you were into in your teens that stays with you. I'd like to have a piece that represents that at the funeral but I don't know where to start, my head's all over the place.

Please can you suggest a classic, iconic piece that I can play for him? It doesn't have to be Led Zep, that was just to indicate the era. And not too long, it would be difficult for the mourners to just sit and listen.

Thank you.

I suppose 'Stairway to Heaven' is the obvious - perhaps too much so? My Zep suggestion would be 'Whole Lotta Love'.
ELP... must look for something for them. Oh, they did 'Jerusalem'. Don't know if that would do?

Feedingthebirds1 · 26/12/2021 11:47

Thank you. Stairway to Heaven was my first thought, but it's a bit too close for comfort for a funeral, and it's eight minutes long. It's going to be a humanist funeral, which I chose because he was an atheist, but the trade off is that you can't have anything religious in it, so I'm not sure I could have Jerusalem either.

But thank you for the ideas.

If I had the time to relive my life, I don't think I'd wish to change a thing ...

Great suggestion

MichelleScarn · 26/12/2021 11:51

Pink Floyd Wish you were Here, or Comfortably Numb?

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 26/12/2021 11:51

Well, In My Time of Dying would be obvious and relevant. But Tea for One might work too. The lyrics are quite apt.

Darningfever · 26/12/2021 11:53

My DP is a rock music encyclopedia. After some serious thinking he suggested 3 songs saying they are all are short and mellow.

Blind faith (1969) Can't find my way home.
Ten years after (1971) I'd love to change the world.
Bread (1972) The Guitar man

So sorry for your loss.

Feedingthebirds1 · 26/12/2021 11:58

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll listen to them all. If I don't reply for a bit it's because it's making me cry my eyes out, not that I'm not grateful.

Was also going to suggest this - a truly beautiful song.

So sorry for your loss.

11GrumpsaGrumping · 26/12/2021 12:00

What about Shine On You Crazy Diamond?

11GrumpsaGrumping · 26/12/2021 12:00

I am really sorry for your loss.

ImmutableSexQueen · 26/12/2021 12:02

It's making me cry, too. 'Guitar Man'. I'd weep buckets at a funeral for that. I'm sorry for your loss. My own funeral song is Lou Reed's 'I love you'. Gentler than I thought you were looking for.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 26/12/2021 12:05

@11GrumpsaGrumping

What about Shine On You Crazy Diamond?
That was my first thought.

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. Flowers

White Queen (as it began) by Queen was another I thought of that would work well at a funeral.

tillytoodles1 · 26/12/2021 12:05

At my husband's funeral we played Shine on you Crazy Diamond, by Pink Floyd as his coffin entered the crematorium, just the lyrics, not the super long intro.

crankysaurus · 26/12/2021 12:05

Sorry for your loss Flowers

Shine on you crazy diamond would have been my suggestion too.

tam23 · 26/12/2021 12:07

Led Zeppelin, Since I’ve been loving you. Sorry for your loss.

Puppylucky · 26/12/2021 12:08

Hi - I am so sorry for your loss. Just a couple of thoughts for you
Hawkwind Silver Machine
Freebird - Lynard Skinnard (my preference)
Alice Cooper 16 (captures the John Peel comment you mentioned)
Golden Earring Radar Love
Bad Company Can't Get Enough of Your Love
Boston More Than a Feeling
Black Sabbath Paranoid
Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb
Free Wishing Well
Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze
I'll stop now as that's probably too many!
I hope everything goes as well as it can

Can't find my home is a lovely song too
Authenticcelestialmusic · 26/12/2021 12:20

Pink floyd - comfortably numb
More modern but an amazing song - 13 Ángels by corrosion of conformity.
Lynard skynrd free bird

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/12/2021 12:23

Freebird by Lynard Skinnard.

But it does go on a bit.

Sorry for your loss.
