Any fans of rock music of the Led Zep era please help - DP's funeral

DP died suddenly last Monday. It's awful. He loved rock music of the late 60s/70s but he never had a favourite, he just loved the genre. What John Peel called 'the music of your life' - what you were into in your teens that stays with you. I'd like to have a piece that represents that at the funeral but I don't know where to start, my head's all over the place.

Please can you suggest a classic, iconic piece that I can play for him? It doesn't have to be Led Zep, that was just to indicate the era. And not too long, it would be difficult for the mourners to just sit and listen.

Thank you.

The long and winding road - the Beatles
Everyday - Slade
Music - John miles
Mr Blue Sky - ELO

Sorry for your loss.

DailyMailHater · 26/12/2021 12:33

Thank You by Led Zep and/or Learning to Fly by Pink Flloyd, both played at my friends funeral a few years ago x

Cornishmaiden · 26/12/2021 12:42

The Great Gig in the sky Pink Floyd
Iconic and seems appropriate. So sorry for your loss Flowers

Sorry for your loss.

As a rock music fan of that era I wouldn't say any of those are proper rock.
WhiteXmas21 · 26/12/2021 14:02

Sorry for your loss. If he’s into that era it sounds like he went far too soon.
How about some bluesy rock by Free?

Easy on my Soul
Come together in the morning

When I go, I would want to have Paul Rodgers sing me off.
💐for you.

Knotaknitter · 26/12/2021 14:28

I am very sorry for your loss. Can I suggest that you don't choose something that you like or that is often played on the radio, you're going to spend the next six months running to turn it off and years more having it be blighted for you.

GlacindaTheTroll · 26/12/2021 14:35

'Don't fear the reaper' by Blue Öyster Cult, which I think wouid be very fitting for a funeral. Nor hard rock, but still broadly in the rock genre and of the right era

Feedingthebirds1 · 26/12/2021 15:14

Thank you everyone. There's so much to think about that I never thought I would have to - or at least not for many years. It's been a comfort to have you all helping me, and thank you for your condolences.

@WhiteXmas21 - far too soon.

@tam23

Led Zeppelin, Since I’ve been loving you. Sorry for your loss.
This song.

Sorry for your loss.

Or what is and what will never be if you wanted a slightly more upbeat one.

Or tangerine. So many amazing led zeppelin songs. Really have a soft spot for since I've been loving you though.

"Measuring a summer's day, I only finds it slips away to grey
The hours, they bring me pain
Tangerine, Tangerine, living reflection from a dream
I was her love, she was my queen, and now a thousand years between
Thinking how it used to be
Does she still remember times like these?
To think of us again?
And I do
Tangerine, Tangerine, living reflection from a dream
I was her love, she was my queen, and now a thousand years between"

I am so sorry for your loss 💐

I have already chosen my songs for my funeral….

Wish you were here - Pink Floyd

Lady d’Arbanville - Cat Stevens

CremeEggThief · 26/12/2021 15:37

Definitely second Wish You Were Here by the Floyd.

Sorry for your loss. Flowers

Hi OP, such a sad and difficult thing to do. My lovely dad died a year ago and it was comforting but hard choosing his funeral music. My family let me choose it and lots of people said afterwards they it captured him perfectly. It is a responsibility though and feels like you really need to get it right.

My suggestions may not be rock enough but one may strike a chord with you. I often think that the music we listen to when we are on our own is the best reflection of us. Take care and look after yourself xxxx

Cosmic Dancer by T-Rex
Days or Strangers by the Kinks
Heroes by Bowie
Sorry for you loss. A few suggestions:

All My Love Led Zeppelin
genius.com/Led-zeppelin-all-my-love-lyrics

Or maybe Kashmir
genius.com/Led-zeppelin-kashmir-lyrics

And another option ... but maybe not rock enough?
Keep Me in Your Heart by Warren Zevon
genius.com/Warren-zevon-keep-me-in-your-heart-lyrics
I was also going to suggest All of My Love which is about Robert Plant's son who died. Quite sad though.
Kashmir is long, I think so is Battle of Evermore.

Blind Faith Can't Find My Way Home is great.

SedentaryCat · 26/12/2021 15:53

My Aunt had The Long and Winding Road by The Beatles and Forever Autumn by Justin Haywood at her funeral. Not rock as such, but both were quite moving.

I am so sorry for your loss.

FlipFlops4Me · 26/12/2021 16:23

@11GrumpsaGrumping

What about Shine On You Crazy Diamond?
Brilliant thought for a PF fan!
prettyteapotsplease · 26/12/2021 16:38

So sorry for your loss Flowers when my DH died over ten years ago I also arranged a humanist funeral. We began with Paradise City by Guns'N Roses and had Stairway to Heaven in the middle, before which the celebrant said that 'anyone with a faith may offer a silent prayer' while it was playing. Yes, eight minutes seems long but it gives a bit of a break. What about an instrumental piece - something like 'Journey of the Sorcerer' by the Eagles at the end?

PollyGray · 26/12/2021 17:02

Would this one be the kind of thing he'd like?

Wishbone Ash, Leaf and Stream:

I've always found it a very moving song. I'm so sorry for your loss.

LeuvenMan · 26/12/2021 17:11

So sorry for your loss.
Another Led Zep suggestion: In my Time of Dying off the Physical Graffiti album
Possibly a bit long but the lyrics are very poignant

In my time of dying
Want nobody to mourn
All I want for you to do
Is take my body home.…

DGRossetti · 26/12/2021 17:44

Sorry for your loss.

Would a related song fit ?

AlwaysAWoman · 26/12/2021 18:00

I agree with 'Thank you' by Led Zep, beautiful song

jellybeanteaparty · 26/12/2021 19:10

DH suggests all my love by Led Zeppelin Written by Robert Plant after the death of his son.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/12/2021 19:25

Unintentional and hopefully not inappropriate but this thread is stirring some fabulous musical memories.
