Any fans of rock music of the Led Zep era please help - DP's funeral

DP died suddenly last Monday. It's awful. He loved rock music of the late 60s/70s but he never had a favourite, he just loved the genre. What John Peel called 'the music of your life' - what you were into in your teens that stays with you. I'd like to have a piece that represents that at the funeral but I don't know where to start, my head's all over the place.

Please can you suggest a classic, iconic piece that I can play for him? It doesn't have to be Led Zep, that was just to indicate the era. And not too long, it would be difficult for the mourners to just sit and listen.

Thank you.

Maybe Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song

dotdotdotdash · 26/12/2021 22:14

So sorry for your loss. These are all tender ones and short:

Running Back - Thin Lizzy
Tangerine - Led Zeppelin
Badge - Cream
Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix

ReformedWaywardTeen · 26/12/2021 22:14

Shine on You Crazy Diamond is a great suggestion
It's more prog rock but I've always said when I go, I want Genesis, Ripples from their A Trick of The Tail album at my funeral

StoopitAutocarrot · 26/12/2021 22:23

Man of the world-fleetwood Mac.

Thank you is an excellent suggestion, and I want Journey of the sorcerer at my funeral please.

The Doors - The End

Nobranothanks · 26/12/2021 22:43

Wish you were here definitely.

Not the right era however Don't Cry by Guns n Roses could work.

I'm so sorry for your loss x

dotdotdotdash · 26/12/2021 22:44

Man of the World is a beautiful song @StoopitAutocarrot

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/12/2021 22:50

@ReformedWaywardTeen. Love that album. In fact ......

dubyalass · 26/12/2021 22:53

I'm so sorry for your loss

I'd go with Led Zep's 'Ramble On' just for the guitar solo, but the lyrics are quite fitting too.

Another suggestion, although not rock n roll, is a bit of Nick Drake - Riverman is a favourite.

WinterDeWinter · 26/12/2021 22:56

I'm so sorry @Feedingthebirds1.

Wincarnis · 26/12/2021 23:00

So sorry you lost your DP.

Agree with previous posters "all of my love"
Other songs I have heard at funerals....
"Avalon" Roxy Music,
"More than a feeling" Boston,
"Fields of Gold" Sting
"Where does the time go" Sandy Denny
"In my Life" Beatles

KimikosNightmare · 26/12/2021 23:01

Re Thank You, there are some excellent live versions but all apart from one are bootlegs so there's crowd noise.

The Louie, Louie/Everyday People version has a fantastic ending but probably too long for a funeral.

Over the Hills and Far Away is lovely too.

Herecomesthesun70 · 26/12/2021 23:09

I'm
So sorry for you loss.
Some suggestions for you Mott the Hoople all the young dudes
Dream on by Aerosmith
Fleetwood Mac The Chain
More than a Feeling by Boston
Beth by Kiss
Queen Your my best friend

hivemindneeded · 26/12/2021 23:12

OP, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you have loved ones around who are supporting you and helping you with the funeral arrangements. Flowers to you.

How about the vocal section from Pink Floyd's 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond' without the long intro bit?

Or - maybe too heartbreaking, but it can be cathartic to have a song that releases the emotions at a funeral - - also Pink Floyd. If you start where the guitar kicks in (at 1.13mins on this version) then it is only about 3.30 mins long.

Kashmir by Led Zep is also incredible - my favourite of theirs and it has a really rousing spiritual feel to it. But it's really long too.

hivemindneeded · 26/12/2021 23:13

If he liked folk rock too, you could have Meet on The Ledge by Fairport Convention or Who Knows Where the Time Goes - also by them.

Branleuse · 27/12/2021 00:01

Freebird - lynryrd skynyrd

grannybiker · 27/12/2021 00:11

Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Black Sabbath - Changes
Deep Purple - Child in time

So very sorry (Can't work out how to add flowers)

KimikosNightmare · 27/12/2021 00:27

Still think Thank You is the best suggestion. It's not too long, it's a love song and it's life affirming.

Poshjock · 27/12/2021 00:36

My DH is a 70s rock fan and told me he wants Queen - Guide me home and Love of my Life to be played. They are both beautiful.

My very deepest condolences to you and I hope you have fiends and family around you at this difficult time Flowers

LilyRed · 27/12/2021 01:12

I am so sorry for your loss my heart goes out to you and I hope you have some company at this time.

I agree with any and all of the Pink Floyd (Learning to Fly would be among one of my choices) Led Zep, and delighted to see someone else has also suggested Meet on the Ledge by Fairport Convention
I would also like to add For Absent Friends by Genesis

daisydalrymple · 27/12/2021 01:29

Free falling Tom Petty
Nothing else matters Metallica (bit later)
Hells bells or Highway to hell AC/DC (not quite ‘sentimental’ though)
Die young Black Sabbath
Dream on Aerosmith
Let it be The Beatles
Mama I’m coming home Ozzy osbourne

So very sorry for your loss. Do you have an idea of the type of sentiment you would like to convey with the song, or that DH might perhaps have wanted, depending on his personality?

Onthedunes · 27/12/2021 02:05

Songbird by Fleetwood Mac

Thank you by Led Zep

hivemindneeded · 27/12/2021 08:20

Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd is a great suggestion by PP. It is one of the absolute classics of the era and the lyrics feel right for the occasion too.

ImustLearn2Cook · 27/12/2021 09:27

Flowers Sorry for your loss @Feedingthebirds1

Wish you were here and Learning to fly by Pink Floyd are two that I would choose for me but also Stand by Me by Ben E King is another.

I hope you have all the love and support you need.

Feedingthebirds1 · 27/12/2021 11:32

Thank you all again. I shall be listening to them all tomorrow night, and will doubtless be a blubbering wreck.

I'm at my sister's, with her and her family. They're being amazing but it's not the same.
