Do you have a unique skill which is absolutely useless??

If I wake up during the night, I am able to tell the time almost exactly before I look at the clock! I don't know how I do it! Such a completely useless skill but I thought it might be a fun topic for a dull Boxing Day!

Anyone remember the film Star Trek The Voyage Home? Well I can do the Whale Song, so when the aliens come to check if we still have whales, I will save the planet. So not a useless skill, just several hundred years too early....

Ohh and I can also move each finger apart independently (like Spock's "V" - I can do this with each finger). My youth was obviously misspent if all of my special skills are Star Trek related...

Yelloi · 26/12/2021 15:13

Can't everyone read upside down and write backward???
I can't 🤷‍♀️

gelatodipistacchio · 26/12/2021 15:14

I should add that I am not trying to make anyone feel bad about their skills! It's just that I didn't think these were unique. Yay for me if they are!

Ibane · 26/12/2021 15:14

After reading this thread, I thank we should pool our niche useless talents and tour this show. Thereby rendering them useful. Or at least lucrative.

fortifiedwithtea · 26/12/2021 15:16

I can separate the peel from a cucumber slice with my teeth without breaking the ring.

I can predict a thunderstorm because I have epilepsy

IWasWillingToGoWassailing · 26/12/2021 15:21

I can read upside down, but don't always know I'm doing it - this has got me into trouble at some junctions where I read the NO ENTRY upside down on the road I'm travelling on and think I'm in the wrong place on the road.

See, both of these are wild, though admittedly only the first is going to work in the !Mumsnet Weird Talents Roadshow… Grin
Justkeeppedaling · 26/12/2021 15:43

My thumbs bend backwards.

hiptobeasquare · 26/12/2021 16:05

When I read a book I can visualise what is happen ring so clearly that it feels like I have watched a film. It's actually a great skill, I love reading. :)

Balonziaga · 26/12/2021 16:05

@foxgoosefinch

I can instantly sing perfect harmony to any tune, even without having heard it before. No idea how or why - I don’t have perfect pitch or anything!
I am jealous of this one
asfuckedascanbe1224 · 26/12/2021 19:29

I can get conscious that I'm in a dream every time when I'm in danger e.g. chased by a monster/bad guys on street - I then let them get really close as almost catching me, then I smile and open my eyes out of it Wink bastards Grin

newtonsthirdlaw · 26/12/2021 19:39

I can play a recorder with my nose. A totally utterly pointless talent learnt at primary school when I thought it would be useful to liven up the recorder lesson.

I also used to be able to look at lists of spellings/vocab lists and memorise them first time. Perfect way of getting full marks but not having to bother doing any homework. I can't do it any more but it seems dd has inherited the skill and spellings homework is her favourite

sausagerole · 26/12/2021 19:51

I have an exceptional ear for voices. I can recognise voices I've heard only ever once before and place them almost immediately. When I was a child I'd answer the phone and know almost immediately which friend of my parents was on the other end.

Totally useless!

RB68 · 26/12/2021 19:57

I can speed read
I can use my left almost as well as my right hand
write with left and right although left is like a 7 yr olds
semi photographic memory - but its difficult to know when this will kick in so a bit unreliable lol

tiredanddangerous · 26/12/2021 19:58

I can put my leg behind my head.

JennyForeigner · 26/12/2021 20:00

I have amazing veins. Every time I give blood nurses gather around to admire them. I've been told it's an absolute pleasure Grin

blueshoes · 26/12/2021 20:22

@Cheeseandlobster

I can tense a muscle in my ear to make a rumbling noise. I discovered other people can do this via another mumsnetter. Apparently its a rare but not unheard of "skill"
This is my skill! So glad I finally found one.
UsernameInTheTown · 26/12/2021 20:24

I can remember everyone I meet's name, dogs name and every minute detail they tell me. Apart from that my memory is shocking.

WhiteXmas21 · 26/12/2021 20:33

@dancemom

I remember numbers, phone numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, if I read them once they just stick in my brain. I can also recite all the books of the bible
I do this, I also remember car registration numbers that my dad and now DH have had since the age of 7. I can read upside down. And I have a great sense of direction.

I can remember virtually every dogs name that I meet, but I can barely remember the names of people I work with or some extended family 😳

HandlebarLadyTash · 26/12/2021 22:13

I can wiggle one ear

I can do that! Only my left ear though - when I try to do my right ear my right eye closes! 😆

Wait - what’s the epilepsy thunderstorm connection?

Also, it’s made me think of sweet Karen in Mean Girls with her breasts that could tell if it was currently raining with 30% accuracy. 😁

AlecTrevelyan006 · 26/12/2021 23:08

@WoodenReindeer

I have a crazy high IQ and can do very well in exams. Unfortunately this hasn't translated well into real life success...
Ditto
36degrees · 27/12/2021 08:31

I can tell by sound whether it's the E train or F train coming into the station. I don't live anywhere near NY now and haven't even visited in 4 years.

whywouldntyou · 27/12/2021 08:40

@SmallGreenStripes

Yep, I can write rhyming couplets. Rather twee ones. Not useless, but very very rarely useful!
Could have been very useful In comping days of yore With slogan competitions I won prizes by the score 🙂
