Do you do laundry on Christmas day?

Sorry a bit of a dull thread!

Just wondering if other people stick a wash on? I always seems to have loads of laundry...if I have a day where I don't do any, I find it really piles up and I end up with a backlog. On the other hand, it feels totally shit to do washing on Christmas day! What do you do?

There was a thread last year I think it was about having bad luck if you do washing on Christmas Day. Or maybe it was Boxing Day. 🤔 well anyway iicr it is a VERY BAD THING. Apparently 😂

I remember one of those extreme clean type programmes where a woman changed her entire family's bedding every morning. She also had a very intense cleaning routine that involved scrubbing, polishing and disinfecting the entire house from top to bottom each day including windows, skirting boards, pulling out furniture to hoover, fridge etc. If I remember correctly she also got through two sets of towels a day as she changed them after the morning showers and again after night showers (they all had to shower twice a day too). I'm guessing there is a continuum between that and having towels that stand up on their own that most of us will fit onto. My DS has ASD and won't reuse towels without washing them.

EdenFlower · 23/12/2021 14:24

No!

Get up to date with the washing a day or two before Christmas!

I've enough to think about on Christmas day without sorting out washing- and if you wash it you have to dry it- I hate washing sitting on the radiator- it spoils the look of the house which I've spent time making look nice for Christmas.

A) I'm with those saying lots of people wash too often. I do 2 loads a week, sometimes 3 (we're a family of 4).
B) I don't see it as "work". It takes about 30 seconds to put the clothes in the machine and turn it on, then another 30 seconds to get them out again and put them in a hamper in the bedroom to later put away.

So if I needed to do a load on Christmas Day I would. I wouldn't see it as any big deal if I do or don't.

Progress2019 · 23/12/2021 14:27

I don’t know if I have done, but I certainly would if there was enough washing

Agree with this. It’s not really a chore, and doesn’t take much longer than hanging your towel up after a shower
AlwaysNapTime · 23/12/2021 14:31

I've worked christmas the last few years so normally some part of my uniform needs a wash christmas morning but this year I'm on mat leave. I plan on getting it all done tomorrow so there's no need to stick it on on Christmas day.

KatherineJaneway · 23/12/2021 14:31

No, no need to do that. I'd rather do more the day before and after.

Magnited · 23/12/2021 14:32

Have not read the full thread, but isn't "doing the laundry" a euphemism for having a shag or something similar?

weegiemum · 23/12/2021 14:33

Probably not, unless there's some sort of emergency, there's 6 of us here for Christmas (all adults now) and the only one likely to get something down themselves is me, and I have several suitable sparkly tops to wear.

I've got everyone to change their beds, towels etc today and I know ds has a load he wants to do later (when he gets back from collecting his Grannie from the airport!) but the last load is in the tumble drier now so from tonight all the clothes will be clean!

Until I spill asparagus soup down myself on Christmas Day!

neveradullmoment99 · 23/12/2021 14:34

@Sunsetsupernova

How often is everyone else changing their towels then? It’s more like every 2 weeks here
Shock 2 weeks? OMG! I change the towels probably every couple of days at least.
Xmasbaby11 · 23/12/2021 14:37

I wouldn't really notice if we did .. it's kind of a speedy chore, especially if it's going in the dryer. Loads of other chores taking place on Xmas Day - washing up, cooking, constant tidying. It's actually a much easier job than any of those!

We probably do 5 loads a week which I think is a lot. 4 of us in the house. Wash towels and bedding every fortnight.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/12/2021 14:38

No, i've just said to DSs to make sure anything that needs washed is in the basket today as it's the last day for laundry until the 27th.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/12/2021 14:41

Although DHs uniforms will need to get done after he finishes on Friday night as he's working Monday to Friday next week. He's only off the weekend.

bettytaghetti · 23/12/2021 14:44

Not unless my fortunately exSIL is staying. She had been in a bedroom with its own bathroom and her young daughter said she felt unwell. Rather than just take her into said bathroom to throw up, she left DN in room and then tried to get DB's attention to come and deal with her. Unfortunately we were playing some rather loud after dinner games (she never would join in) and in the time it took for him to hear, DN had thrown up all over the bed.
So having been cooking & clearing up all day and finally having the chance to sit down and join in the fun, I was having to change and wash a puke covered bed. She even just stood there whilst I put the clean bedding on. 😤

NotImpossible · 23/12/2021 14:44

@Comedycook - that's for 2 people. I'm trying to think - it's not something I really count up but I'd say one load of pj bottoms / undies a week (when I run out of clean ones!), bed changed probably weekly but I save sheets for a nice day as we have 3 sets. Towels changed around weekly too but a wash would take 4/5 so only one load every 2 weeks. I usually throw some jeans/tops in with the above loads. I don't really wear white - nothing to seperate.
Maybe one wool wash a month - wool doesn't like a lot of washing. Probably 2 loads a week average.
Maybe my washing machine is bigger than average?

flapjackfairy · 23/12/2021 14:47

Yes. 2 special needs kids so wet beds every day etc so washing gets done as normal.

MuchTooTired · 23/12/2021 14:47

I have absolutely killed myself doing all the laundry this week, including putting it away. I’m so hopeful that I can have Christmas Day free from laundry and that we won’t generate a wash load!

That’s my plan anyway, it’ll probably not work out Xmas Sad

BendicksBittermints4Breakfast · 23/12/2021 14:48

Agh, bad memories! Our way of doing things was that I was in charge of the kitchen, OH was on charge of the dining table etc etc and general tidying on the day, worked well for years until OH decided at about 11 am it was a good time to round up all the tea towels in the kitchen and the OVEN GLOVES and put them in the washing machine, to be helpful!!! We dind't have a tumble drier in those days and, luckily, there wasn't a half built patio!

megletthesecond · 23/12/2021 14:48

Yes.

Nothingventurednothinggained · 23/12/2021 14:49

I will put a load on. We are going away for a few days and I loathe to come back to washing in the basket.
It will only take me 5 minutes and I’ll do it first thing in the morning.
I am weird about washings though. Missing a day makes me feel really anxious.

Daisydoesnt · 23/12/2021 14:50

I do a load once or twice a week so probably not but if it was a sunny/blowy day I might (not had many good washing days recently!)

But the bed linen is one load, and bath & hand towels/ tea towels/ dishcloths/ bath mats make up another (probably). So what about clothes?

MotherWol · 23/12/2021 14:50

Probably, yes. DD has reflux and is weaning so we tend to need to do a wash every day. No dryer, so a small load dries on the airer quicker than a big wash.

3 loads of washing a day?! No wonder our planet is fucked.

It’s your car, not your laundry that’s the problem.

sadpapercourtesan · 23/12/2021 14:52

Hell, no. I do fuck all of any practical value on Christmas Day, apart from cook the dinner - and DH and I like to get good and squiffy and do that together, so it's more of a fun craft activity than a chore Xmas Smile

Riverlee · 23/12/2021 14:59

No, definitely not (unless someone was sick etc).
