Do you do laundry on Christmas day?

Sorry a bit of a dull thread!

Just wondering if other people stick a wash on? I always seems to have loads of laundry...if I have a day where I don't do any, I find it really piles up and I end up with a backlog. On the other hand, it feels totally shit to do washing on Christmas day! What do you do?

Yeah sometimes. The washing machine is near my back door so if I let the dog in/out and a wash needs doing, I'll pop it in.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/12/2021 12:42

I do our washing at the weekends. A load of DD1’s, a load of DD2’s, a load of mine and DH’s and a load of towels and bedding. I don’t have the time or the energy to be washing every day so missing Christmas Day won’t make a difference. I’ll only put a load on if there is a vomit or poo incident (DD2 is 15mo so these are rare now) that needs sorting quickly.

WorraLiberty · 23/12/2021 12:43

Obviously I meant I pop the washing in and not the dog Xmas Blush

I do around 6 loads a week (family of 5) so I would try to avoid doing one on Christmas Day.

DSGR · 23/12/2021 12:43

Why would they stink? We have a heated towel rail that dries them every day. We do once a week here, nothing stinks

3catsandcounting · 23/12/2021 12:43

@Jumpingintochristmas

In twenty years of parenting I have put the washing machine on once only at Christmas after a very unfortunate tripping/trifle incident involving DH Grin
That so made me snigger.. I have an image in my head 😂
RosiePosieDozy · 23/12/2021 12:43

Nope. I wouldn't do washing on Christmas Day and probably not Boxing Day. I never have. I'm too busy having fun Wine

If you have a backlog, can you not catch up before Christmas Day so that you can relax at Christmas?

itsgettingwierd · 23/12/2021 12:44

I'd like to say no!

However each year I do my last washing day xmas Eve Eve.

Today is such - all bedding and last loads in baskets etc.

Then it all goes away xmas Eve.

I usually always have it in Boxing Day morning - but sometimes it'll be Christmas Day as we settle to watch tv. So goes on about 8 - by which point xmas is pretty much over Grin

Gazelda · 23/12/2021 12:45

My family know that everything has to be in the laundry basket 3 days before Christmas or it won't get done until after Boxing Day.
I do a wash every day the week before, so all towels are fresh, bed linen changed, school uniform ready for back to school etc.
We're quite open plan downstairs so we can hear the washer while it's on, which is why I usually set it on a timer to start early morning ready for when I get up. I'm generally twitchy about the full basket by Boxing Day night so shove a load on before bed.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 23/12/2021 12:45

How often do you change yours? We do once a week but sometimes it's probably closer to 10 days. Not sure what the issue is with that.

Why do you wash it at all?

@Sunsetsupernova

How often is everyone else changing their towels then? It’s more like every 2 weeks here
Twice a week here, 4 bathsheets and 4 handtowels. Saturdays and Wednesday normally. We have one heated towel rail, it’s impossible to keep towels fresh and dry in the winter, damp months.
JustFrustrated · 23/12/2021 12:47

Once a week for towels....after use they go on the heated towel rail/over the bannister. They're never smelly and not manky either. White and fluffy as the day we bought them.

RavingAnnie · 23/12/2021 12:47

No. No jobs on Christmas Day (other than cooking, washing up and tidying of course).

TenThousandSpoons · 23/12/2021 12:47

No, I won’t but am doing extra in the run up to get on top of it!

Skyeheather · 23/12/2021 12:48

No, the machine is loaded and will be switched on first thing on 27th - 24/25/26 it's essential housework/cleaning/cooking only - it's Christmas for me too!

Kite22 · 23/12/2021 12:49

I am not horrified at the idea - it really doesn't take long to bung a load in the machine, and I'm sure I have done a couple of times when the dc were smaller and I was WOTH as well as trying to get them to all the various things in the run up to Christmas.
I won't be this year, as my dc are now adult / washing is less / I wfh and can do things like a wash whilst I am here / there hasn't been anywhere near as much stuff going on as usual so we are on top of everything.

StruggleStreet · 23/12/2021 12:49

The laundry pile is my nemesis. It’s a constant battle to keep the dirty clothes from overwhelming us (have a refluxy baby and a messy toddler which isn’t helping). I probably should take a day off but I know it’ll make me twitchy if I don’t do at least one load. Maybe I’ll just do some towels as a Christmas treat to myself, towels are easy.

It's true Grin. I remember when my mine was out of action for a couple of days. Hand washing took forever. Those poor women in the past who had huge families and no washing machines, dishwashers or fridges...the workload must have been huge.

Maverickess · 23/12/2021 12:53

I will have to because I need to get my uniform washed for the next day and I'll put other stuff in so I'm not wasting the wash.
But I'm not sure I'd do it if it wasn't necessary.

Angel2702 · 23/12/2021 12:54

No because there is nowhere to dry it without having wading all over the house, not the look I go for. Last wash is today until Boxing Day so the Aires can be folded away out of sight and out of the way.

NannyGythaOgg · 23/12/2021 12:55

I would if I needed to but that is unlikely unless I spill red wine on something.

I live alone and do one clothes wash a week and sheets and towels get done alternate weeks. White knickers go in with my white sheets, other than that I have nothing in the way of clothes that can't be washed together.

If I get a new pair of really dark things that might lose colour for a while (jeans for example) I stick them in with the (grey towels) for a few washes.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/12/2021 12:56

If you have outdoor hobbies & cloth nappies then wearing a jumper twice (which I always do) then you can easily generate 3 loads a day.

I come back from the horses absolutely caked in mud, I wear breeches several times if I can but have endless outdoor clothing to be washed this time of year. Not to mention girth sleeves, numnahs etc
The toddler has a ball at nursery with messy play but with potty training etc too she generates tons.

Can you not appreciate that people have lives that might be different to yours?!

Christ CLEARLY then you have your reasons for all that laundry but haven’t you ever read the threads where people wash their towels after every single use; wear items of clothing only once or change their bedding every other day?
