Do you do laundry on Christmas day?

Sorry a bit of a dull thread!

Just wondering if other people stick a wash on? I always seems to have loads of laundry...if I have a day where I don't do any, I find it really piles up and I end up with a backlog. On the other hand, it feels totally shit to do washing on Christmas day! What do you do?

Body towels are washed once a week, hand towels every couple of days and bedding once a fortnight. We wear clothes (except underwear) a couple of times or until they look or smell dirty before washing. We’re a family of four. I still do at least one and sometimes two loads every day. Where am I going wrong? Definitely when it was just me and DH we only did a load twice or three times a week.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/12/2021 14:00

@Tianatiers

I was thinking the exact same thing as I hung up the second load this morning. I’m going to give myself and our overworked washing machine a break on Christmas Day but I will be paying for it for a few days afterwards! Also we have guests staying and I’ll have nowhere to hang it up while they’re here. When they go there’ll be all their bedding and towels. Oh dear I’m going to try not to think about it! Deep joy!
I think it’s reasonable to ask people to bring their own towels isn’t it, if you are short of space and they’re only there for a few days?

I’d also offer to bring my own bedding but realise that’s another contentious issue on MN!

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 23/12/2021 14:00

I have 8 kids so probably! I do 4 or 5 loads a day, I don’t really think it’s a big deal sticking a load of washing on tbh, unless your hand washing it all like the old days Smile

We do three loads a week: mine, his, bedding and towels. So no need to do any Christmas Day.

DirtyDancing · 23/12/2021 14:01

I have just put my washing machines out of office on: I won't be available to wash anything 24th-26th inclusive. Merry Christmas.

Absolutely. Not.

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 23/12/2021 14:02

And if this is turning into a towel thread, then I wash towels after every use! With this many people in the house I couldn’t stand damp towels hanging round everywhere! And I just prefer to use a clean towel every time. Each to their own though!

Kotatsu · 23/12/2021 14:04

Couldn't care less about the washing - it's the folding and putting away.

I won't explicitly do a wash, but I'd put anything filthy straight in, and if it was full I'd turn it on, but not plan to dry it until the next day.

Unless something critical happens like red wine on something precious - then it'll be straight in the minute it happens!

Don’t you have more damp towels hanging around from washing them each time? If you use the tumble dryer, why not tumble dry your towels briefly after using them to get more uses out of them?

Oh yep mine will be on, not in the afternoon but whilst I’m cooking there’s no harm. There’s 6 of us so plenty washing youngest also incontinent so lots of bedding pjs etc then clothes during day at times. Drives me a bit mad and wash machine Broke down yesterday so arghhh
I feel like I never get on top of it all

ivykaty44 · 23/12/2021 14:09

no, its a festive day and for enjoying ourselves - so no washing.

Ive done most of the prep for the roast today and will finish of prepping tomorrow, therefore its juts a case of cooking and popping int he oven on xmas day without any work.

Table is laid ready for lunch in the dinning area.

we will be wearing our new pjs for xmas so no washing there!

Staffy1 · 23/12/2021 14:10

Yes, we have to do about 2 or 3 washes a day minimum, usually more, so missing a day would be a problem.

Yes to be fair I imagine finding places to spread out and dry 8-10 towels would be tricky!

No,

timtam23 · 23/12/2021 14:12

I might, we don't have a tumble dryer & no space for heated airers etc so the washing is line dried all year. If Christmas Day looks dry and a bit windy I'll probably put a load on rather than have damp washing lying around on another day

Tightwad2020 · 23/12/2021 14:14

Is the solution to 'wet, musty towels' not to put them on the radiator/in the airing cupboard then? I probably change towels once a week, more often for the ones in the lav. But I doubt the towels are very dirty - they are used to dry your hands/face/body/hair after washing these various parts clean after all. And for those who cry out, but what about the invisible bacteria???!!! Well - what about them?

godmum56 · 23/12/2021 14:14

@maddiemookins16mum

"They must stink, wet, musty towels are one of my pet hates."

why must they stink? they dry on the towel rail in the bathroom and get used on clean skin. I use a towelling robe after showers and it gets washed about once a fortnight. Its hung in the airing cupboard to dry.

thatsallineed · 23/12/2021 14:15

I think in the early baby days I might have done a load if it was vital, otherwise the only things I'd wash would be something like a white linen tablecloth that's just had red wine spilt all over it. Which, due to DH's innate clumsiness, has happened more than once!

Musicaltheatremum · 23/12/2021 14:16

@DSGR

Why would they stink? We have a heated towel rail that dries them every day. We do once a week here, nothing stinks
Same here....I usually wash them every Thursday but had to go to work today so didn't....might leave them for a bit longer.

Heated towel rail. I dry my clean body...nothing stinks..

oh you wait till the ecology warriors see this! Grin
godmum56 · 23/12/2021 14:17

yes I'd stick a load on if it was needed

YessicaHaircut · 23/12/2021 14:19

Yes, I probably will. I have an 18 month old who goes through a few changes of clothes over the day and often needs pyjamas and sleeping bag washing when he wakes up too. I’ll probably leave it in the tumble dryer and not bother folding and putting it away until Boxing Day though, as a special Christmas treat 😂🎄

Cherrytart23 · 23/12/2021 14:20

If needed yes but planning on doing the last wash tmz evening then if goes to plan none till the 27th we all deserve a few days off away from house work and washing.

BobbyeinArkansas · 23/12/2021 14:20

I do 3 washes a week, don't think I've ever done one on Christmas Day

Tightwad2020 · 23/12/2021 14:21

And to answer the original question, no, I would not set out to do laundry on Christmas day. I do a lot of cleaning and prep beforehand, and I try to have a day where the house can take care of itself. But, you know - dogs, teenagers, guests, weather, accidents. Topping up on bed linen in the sales each year is one way of avoiding the frantic washing between house guests.
