Do you do laundry on Christmas day?

Sorry a bit of a dull thread!

Just wondering if other people stick a wash on? I always seems to have loads of laundry...if I have a day where I don't do any, I find it really piles up and I end up with a backlog. On the other hand, it feels totally shit to do washing on Christmas day! What do you do?

as tempting as it might be, i do not

Fleetingfoot · 23/12/2021 13:28

@Diana8

There is no "doing laundry" any more - it does itself. You put it in the machine with powder and press a button, so yes, I use the machine all over Christmas.
Agreed,it's not a hard task is it?
mumda · 23/12/2021 13:29

Never do laundry on Christmas day - because it's Christmas.

or New Years Day:
Superstition says you'll be washing every day if you do.

We usually wash any new Christmas things on the day, but no regular washing.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/12/2021 13:29

Only if something gets dirty and would probably stain.

When I had a lot of small children, probably two loads.

NameChangeCity123 · 23/12/2021 13:30

Got a teething baby who is weaning and constantly caked in rusks, porridge or purée so I'll have a wee load on in the morning but don't really think it's a big hardship to be honest

NMC2022 · 23/12/2021 13:31

Sometimes. I am alone on Christmas Day so will probably potter about and do some cleaning as well!

LuchiMangsho · 23/12/2021 13:31

I live in the US and I have a magic washer and dryer that means no hanging out to dry and my clothes have no creases. It’s industrial sized and lives in my basement. But we are a big family so we do a daily load of laundry. It doesn’t take that long to bung a load in and then put it away.

Having said that- Christmas is not as big a deal as Thanksgiving in the US especially if you are not Christian. DH works on call over Christmas as do many of his Jewish colleagues. I/DH also run a load of washing on Thanksgiving.

Get a grip, it’s a towel that’s been used to dry something clean, it’s not going to kill you

Nor would licking my fork and putting it back in the drawer ten times before washing but I’m not going to do that either.

😂

I’ve got no answer. It’s actually my number 1 Christmas problem. I usually put our drier in the living room but it doesn’t take much and things take ages to dry over winter. So I can’t do this on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as need space for dining table ( at least) And then I usually do ironing in the living room as well. So I end up with quite a lot after 25th. Do small loads and put them on radiators to spread a bit.
And please don’t tell me not to iron, I don’t iron socks and bras but other cotton clothes ( we don’t wear synthetic) need at least some ironing.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/12/2021 13:34

I might on Christmas Day but not on New Years Day ( fearsomely unlucky )

mnp321 · 23/12/2021 13:34

I suspect the answer to this lies in whether people tumble dry their washing. We have a tumble dryer but mostly hang washing on radiators so we heat the house and dry the washing at the same time.

It's not the effort of putting a wash on per se but I don't want washing on radiators on Christmas Day. We're a family of four but I can't imagine the washing basket getting too out of hand by not washing on the three days over Christmas.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/12/2021 13:34

I can only assume the 1-2 towel users must either not know how to shower properly or how to dry towels so they’re fresh enough to use again

appleturnovers · 23/12/2021 13:34

They must stink, wet, musty towels are one of my pet hates.

Even if you don't wash your towel that often, you still hang it up to dry after every use. Just because it hasn't been washed doesn't mean it's wet all the time. If you only use it to dry a clean body then it doesn't get dirty very quickly.

NMC2022 · 23/12/2021 13:35

@Ionlydomassiveones why?! I shower, my towel touches me for a couple of minutes so it's damp, not sipping wet and I hang it to dry
I'm not sharing it with anyone and it smells of moisturiser a bit. It's not manky or mouldy or damp but then I don't let it go on the floor or get drowned in water or crumple it up, it dries really quickly
Usually change them every 7-10 days

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 23/12/2021 13:36

@ShirleyPhallus

No, but then I’m always vaguely horrified (yet can’t look away) at MN laundry threads because people often say they have about 3 loads per day and I just can’t imagine creating that volume of laundry.

Wear a jumper twice. Change your towel every 10 days. Nothing will happen except for less laundry to do

Yeah, this. There's 5 of us and I do 4-6 loads a week over 2 or 3 days. I do have a 10kg machine though, but most loads are done on Half load as there isn't usually 10kg of whites or synthetics to do at a time.

I agree, I actually end up washing towels more in the summer as in this house the towel rail doesn't come on with the hot water but the heating so they don't always dry. In the winter they dry easily so last longer.

Same here. Shower in the evening, goes on the heated towel rail after use, dry in no time. Why would it get musty? I find about a week is when they start to get a bit grubby- toothpaste etc.

If you’re getting bodily fluids all over your towels I would suggest you’re doing it wrong.

Why do your towels get wet and musty - just hang them up to air after use Confused

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/12/2021 13:39

@Sunsetsupernova

How often is everyone else changing their towels then? It’s more like every 2 weeks here
same here, and they don't smell as they are kept on a heated towel rail
Kite22 · 23/12/2021 13:39

What @ShirleyPhallus, @appleturnovers, and @NMC2022 all said.

I do wonder what some people, like Ionlydomassiveones actually do with their towels Confused

NameChange30 · 23/12/2021 13:42

@StruggleStreet

The laundry pile is my nemesis. It’s a constant battle to keep the dirty clothes from overwhelming us (have a refluxy baby and a messy toddler which isn’t helping). I probably should take a day off but I know it’ll make me twitchy if I don’t do at least one load. Maybe I’ll just do some towels as a Christmas treat to myself, towels are easy.
This sounds familiar! I have a messy 4yo and 15mo. It's very rare that I have a day without doing laundry, so sheets or towels feel like a day off Grin

There's only 3 of us and we all wear clothes more than once and I can easily do 3 loads a day without any trouble at all. Outdoors clothes, gym gear, swimming stuff, bedding, everyday clothes.
