Do you do laundry on Christmas day?

Sorry a bit of a dull thread!

Just wondering if other people stick a wash on? I always seems to have loads of laundry...if I have a day where I don't do any, I find it really piles up and I end up with a backlog. On the other hand, it feels totally shit to do washing on Christmas day! What do you do?

@ShirleyPhallus

No, but then I’m always vaguely horrified (yet can’t look away) at MN laundry threads because people often say they have about 3 loads per day and I just can’t imagine creating that volume of laundry.

Wear a jumper twice. Change your towel every 10 days. Nothing will happen except for less laundry to do

Surely it depends. on your lifestyle and your household size. A single person who is WFH will generate far less than a family of 4 or 5 with kids in school will.
U8976532 · 23/12/2021 13:12

4 of us and no, we don't need to do laundry every day but DH does most of the laundry so it's up to him, I doubt it though!

Mydogisagentleman · 23/12/2021 13:13

Maybe.
It will definitely go on Xmas eve when I finish work. I always undress in the downstairs toilet, put my uniform in to wash then have a shower.
I dry myself on a towel that gets changed every other or every three days

@MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry

Get a grip, it’s a towel that’s been used to dry something clean, it’s not going to kill you

Nor would licking my fork and putting it back in the drawer ten times before washing but I’m not going to do that either.

It takes a very strange logic to make that comparison. The only towel in this house that’s washed more often than once a week is the hand towel in the downstairs loo as it’s the only one used by more than one person.
IglesiasPiggl · 23/12/2021 13:14

@Sunsetsupernova

How often is everyone else changing their towels then? It’s more like every 2 weeks here
I have come to the conclusion that people treat their towels very differently after use. I spread mine out to dry or put them on the radiator immediately after use. Others seem to leave them in a wet pile or hang them so they don't dry well. In that case I guess you would need to change them more often.
TheSpiral · 23/12/2021 13:14

We don't have a tumble dryer and I don't want clothes drying all over the house on Christmas day or Boxing Day. So I did my last wash before Xmas yesterday and it's drying now.

GTAlogic · 23/12/2021 13:14

Mumsnet: the site where people worry and virtue signal about saving the planet yet also shower 3x daily and boil wash everything after every single use because, OMG, there might be germs on them and they might smell (though they probably won't). Xmas Hmm

No, we don't do the laundry on Xmas day.

TheCreamCaker · 23/12/2021 13:15

If we've got laundry, I do it. It's no big deal to have the washer and dryer on.

CampagVelocet · 23/12/2021 13:16

@Dresslover1950s

I wash towels after every 1/2 uses couldn’t imagine 10 days
Christ. No wonder the planet's fucked with this sort of nonsense happening.
BiddyPop · 23/12/2021 13:16

We try very hard to clear the decks in advance so that we don't have to. Changing sheets and towels, getting DD to donate anything dirty off the pit that is a teenager's floor, etc.

But some years, with pressures of work, bad weather, life in general, ....we sometimes have had a need to throw a wash on during Christmas Day. What we have usually done is have our nice breakfast, organise it when we are getting dressed, and turn it on as we leave the house to go to mass and family visits. So it is done when we get home. Then we usually throw it into the tumble dryer (it's the one day of the year where we absolutely don't have the clothes horse out) as it is usually too late for outdoors even if the weather is ok, but we will hang on the line if the weather is dry enough and clear enough that there is drying even during the hours of darkness.

If we are away, no. Never.

And with Covid, we are not going to Mass or visits. So if we HAVE to do it this year, (which is looking unlikely at this point but never say never in this house!), it will be after breakfast and probably while we are out for a walk but we'll be back in plenty of time to hang outdoors if the forecast is not fulfilled and we don't actually have rain. (We'll walk regardless, but shorter, and use the dryer if necessary).

Crunchymum · 23/12/2021 13:17

Laundry is one of my more preferred chores and there are 5 of us do we generate a fair amount but fuck doing washing on Christmas day.

Hellolittlestar · 23/12/2021 13:18

I probably will stick a load on as there’s a pile waiting that I’m catching up on already.

Those that say towels get wet and musty - you’re supposed to dry them between uses. We probably change ours 1-2 a week. 10 days is probably pushing a bit though.

Diana8 · 23/12/2021 13:19

There is no "doing laundry" any more - it does itself. You put it in the machine with powder and press a button, so yes, I use the machine all over Christmas.

ElftonWednesday · 23/12/2021 13:20

No, I will do the last lot today then leave it until Monday.

senorafridgidaire · 23/12/2021 13:20

No! I'm doing all mine today, and then ill do whatever needs doing around the 28th. No washing on the festive days!

knittingaddict · 23/12/2021 13:21

I don't do any housework on Christmas Day beyond cooking and clearing up afterwards. I plan it that way and everything is done beforehand.

Ragwort · 23/12/2021 13:22

I may do this year as my Uni DS is arriving home late on Christmas Eve.

I remember when I was married to my ExH (no DC) being so utterly bored on Christmas Day that I did a pile of ironing. Grin.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/12/2021 13:22

I change my bath towel monthly Confused

I hang it up after my bath so never musty or damp

And I tend to actually wash in the bath...

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 23/12/2021 13:23

Lol at all the virtue signallers. As if they aren’t utterly wasteful in the vast majority of their lives.

U8976532 · 23/12/2021 13:23

@Diana8 until the clothes can put themselves in the washing machine, fold and put themselves away I think it's fair to say people "do" enough to claim they are "doing" laundry. Or do you say you use the oven rather than using the verb "cooking"?

Fleetingfoot · 23/12/2021 13:24

I like routine (I got out of a very chaotic lifestyle by signing up to flylady many years ago) So I stick to checking to see if a wash needs to go on first thing, as always. Take a basketful downstairs if it needs doing, flick the kettle on as I go past, and bung it in the machine. Takes barely a minute. It's in the garage though, wouldn't do it if it was in the kitchen while we were entertaining.
Shove in dryer when done.
Routines like this keep me sane, nothing ever builds up and becomes overwhelming, and never takes more than 15 mins or so.
A win for me!

Stressybetty · 23/12/2021 13:25

Probably if it needs doing. Takes seconds to pop it on. We have a litter of pups with their bedding changed everyday and washed so rather not have it hanging around

PotatoOfTheNight · 23/12/2021 13:27

We're a family of 5 and don't do laundry every day, so no, I wouldn't choose to make Xmas Day a laundry day.

Having said that, I have been known to throw the table cloth, napkins, tea towels etc in after the big meal, so that could count.

Tuliprain · 23/12/2021 13:27

No, none on Xmas day or Boxing Day here. We are a family of 4 and I don’t do washing every day anyway so not a problem to miss out a couple of days.
