Characters from films you can’t stand

Lighthearted obvs.

Me and DS watched Nativity 2 today and Mr Poppy is the worst. I’m not sure how anyone can think he’s a good role model for the kids and he’s just so bleedin’ incompetent. The bit where the kids are walking through the woods, go into the cave and then abseil down the cliff had me shouting at the tv (yep probably a bit over invested 😂).

Not a film but Angela Valdes from Power gives me the rage. I have no idea why but I've never felt so much hatred for a fake person ever.

mathanxiety · 23/12/2021 03:44

Mrs Doubtfire and also the Sally Fields character. I hate that movie.

newlabelwriter · 23/12/2021 04:00

When you think about it the entire premise for Mrs Doubtfire is pretty weird 😂

Everyone in Love Actually. It has not aged well.

YourenutsmiLord · 23/12/2021 06:14

Charles Dickens' Great Expectations was on BBC 2 the other day - the character of Pip as a young man was played by John Mills (38 years old at the time) and his sidekick was payed by Laurence Olivier (39 years old at the time it was made).
The best part of the film is when Pip and Estella blossom into young adulthood. Mills raised his voice and was plastered in make up.
It's a David Lean film - how could he think that was a good idea?
Here's the handsome young dandies. Grin

Jar jar binx…how that got through a studio.

Carrie in four weddings…

Gotthetshirt23 · 23/12/2021 06:23

@Justcannotbearsed
You beat me to it - Jar Jar Binx
Terrible.
I'm sure I'll think of more when I wake up....

DroopyClematis · 23/12/2021 06:47

The one that springs to mind, of late, is the Jared Leto character in The House of Gucci.
I was cringing.

normanthegonk · 23/12/2021 06:49

Kevin from home alone

grapewine · 23/12/2021 06:50

Mr. Big. Toxic af relationship. Plus one on Jar Jar Binks. Ridiculous character.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/12/2021 06:54

The one that immediately springs to mind is Spike from Notting Hill. I find him so completely repulsive. 🤢🤮

Sparklingbrook · 23/12/2021 07:10

YY to everyone in Love Actually.

Sorry to be That Poster but that's not Laurence Olivier. Totally agree they are far too old to be playing young rapscallions though. Still love that film even so.
newlabelwriter · 23/12/2021 07:35

Jar Jar Binks is dreadful but I’d still rather have him as my Reception kids TA than Mr Poppy. He’s such a dick 😂

insert1x20p We watched Love Actually last night and I agree.

Awful dialogue from all of them.

User12398712 · 23/12/2021 07:39

Elf.

newlabelwriter · 23/12/2021 07:48

Agree on Elf. Total Mr Poppy vibes😂

Sorry to be That Poster but that's not Laurence Olivier.
It's Alec Guinness.

Sunnysidegold · 23/12/2021 08:12

Mr poppy here too. I'm a teacher and I was really annoying "that would never happen in school!" When I watched it.

I don't think there is anyone who likes jar jar Binks is there?

middleager · 23/12/2021 08:22

Muriel's dad in 'Muriel's Wedding'. In fact, I find the whole film depressing.

Agree with Mrs Doubtfire. Obviously, the husband, Robin William's character, is the character I can't stand, for multiple reasons.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/12/2021 08:24

If any of the Mr Poppy haters (me too) follow Mr P on Facebook, he posted a video of his reaction to The Nativity from the view of a teacher. It was very accurate. Grin

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 23/12/2021 08:27

Professor Deloris Umbridge

Flangeosaurus · 23/12/2021 08:32

Yoda and Gandalf. Yoda is an annoying green know it all and Gandalf is needlessly cryptic and never there when he could be useful.

Also, any manic pixie dream girl character. I cannot be arsed to watch some depthless male imagining of the ideal female.

greatape · 23/12/2021 08:53

I watched 4 weddings and a funeral with dd who is 12. Her first time of watching. She HATED Carrie and kept pointing out what an arse she was - ok at the first wedding then coming on to Charlie despite being engaged, cheating on her fiancé, inviting a man she knew was in love with her to her wedding, making that snide little comment in her speech, telling Charlie at his friends funeral when he was devastated and vulnerable that she liked the fact he loved her. Then turning up at his wedding 'our timing's been really bad hasn't it' no you are a colossal bitch.

And breathe

coffeerevelsrock · 23/12/2021 08:57

Haha - ds1 always says this about Mr Poppy. He insists on watching the films and spends the whole time ranting about Mr Poppy and saying 'Hands up if you hate Mr Poppy/think Mr Poppy's an idiot...' when Mr Poppy is doing the 'hands up if you want to go and see a woman give birth/abseil down a cliff with a donkey...etc etc' thing.

Characters I hate are the Andie McDowell woman in Four Weddings, obviously, and the woman in Lost in Translation - what a self-obsessed, stuck up misery with an inflated sense of how great she is. Totally unbelievable. The man isn't much better but at least makes some sort of sense as a character.
