For me, it has to be Robbie Williams.. I feel irate when I hear him on the radio. I will never ever like his voice.

Jess Glyne also Blush I'm sure she's very nice but I cannot listen to any of her songs

alwayswrighty · 21/12/2021 13:20

Madonna.

On a separate note I watched the start of the Royal Variety last night and Rod Stewart was dreadful.

Porcupineintherough · 21/12/2021 13:21

Kate Bush. And I know I'm alone in this.

LadyOfMisrule · 21/12/2021 13:22

Whitney Houston.

And anyone else who doesn’t simply hold a note; just because you can whizz up and down a scale, doesn’t mean you should.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 21/12/2021 13:22

@CasaBonita

Jess Glynn is spectacularly awful. How she made it big I'll never know.
This. Every time she sings it sounds like it's a Herculean effort.

Absolutely. Why does anyone feel the need?

We're at the time of year when I have to urgently exit shops as soon as, "Oooooo-oooooh aaaiiiiiii don't want a kit for Christmas...." comes in.

Yeah, I bet Robert Smith is sitting about wishing they''d put that out instead of Wild Mood Swings. Grin
Innocenta · 21/12/2021 13:34

@Lansonmaid agreed! Freddie was one of the greatest vocalists of all time Xmas Grin

CornflowerBlue62 · 21/12/2021 13:35

Another one for Rod Stewart. I still the confusion I felt as a child on hearing him for the first time. Why? How?

No doubt this makes me a bad person, but I can only take Mariah Carey in very small doses. All that yodelling.

Katyppp · 21/12/2021 13:42

Reading through the responses, it's clearly an age thing.
I don't mind a lot of the artists mentioned here, but I have to - literally - turn off the radio when I hear yet another singing breathing, gulping, croaking and whispering (usually) her way through an acoustic S..L.O.W version of a perfectly good song

Absolutely. I shouted " Alexia , shut the fuck up " so loudly I woke my 16 yr old DD from her afternoon slumber.
ultra88 · 21/12/2021 14:19

@Shallwegoforawalk

Agree Bob Dylan is truly awful and should have stuck to writing.

Liam Gallagher - so nasal and whiney/shouty it can't even be called singing.

Whoever said Sharlene Spiteri (Texas) are you mad? She's a goddess, her voice live is incredible and THAT video with Alan Rickman

I've just had to re- watch that. I can't believe I never noticed how incredibly beautiful she is.

Janis Joplin. She just couldn't sing. Just shouted instead. Awful

OhYeahyeahyeah · 21/12/2021 14:35

Jessie J 🤢

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 21/12/2021 14:36

Kate Bush

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Obviously going back a bit now, but Cilla Black's voice was strong, powerful, in-tune.... and yet really horrible.

I always remember a comment on an old Radio 4 comedy-music show where a musical impressionist was introduced as able to sound 'so much like Cilla that even Cilla herself walked in once, heard her and asked "What's that dreadful noise?" ' Grin

Bob Dylan's voice is also truly horrendous. I still can't believe that, in a band that included Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, there were occasions where it was decided that Bob was the best man to sing the next bit. Brilliant songwriter, but so was Jim Steinman - and Jim, unlike Bob, had quite a decent voice; yet still usually bowed out of the singing in favour of other artists with outstanding voices.

Yes of course. Cilla. A voice like nails endlessly dragging on a blackboard
cherrycola7 · 21/12/2021 14:40

And bloody Sharlene Spiteri.

Horrible voice and a career based on shamelessly ripping off other songs.

First she covers Tired of being alone by Al Green, then rips off the song with "I don't want a lover" with the same fucking guitar riff

midsomermurderess · 21/12/2021 14:47

Adele, it's all a bit moo-y. And anyone who does that chord-shifting trilling, like Mariah Carey, or sings down their nose when changing key, like Ronan Keating.

TrueGrit54 · 21/12/2021 14:47

I always switch the radio off when a Whitney Houston song comes on, I think it’s more that she’s been so overplayed and then the whole drugs problem, I just wince and have to switch her off. Talent competitions often pick her songs too. Used to be a fan decades ago but shudder now.
