For me, it has to be Robbie Williams.. I feel irate when I hear him on the radio. I will never ever like his voice.

Katherine Jenkins. Her transitions between chest and head voice sound like me changing gears in an early driving lesson (and yes, I was a terrible learner and switched to automatic...)

I can't stand when she does that operatic/choirgirl singing that she's known for, as it just sounds so fake and forced; but when she was on Masked Singer, and just sang normally, I thought it was really beautiful.

I always assumed that Janis Joplin was doing it defiantly: knowing that she had no singing voice at all, as if the brutality of the delivery was there to artistically frame the content. To be fair, I've often thought the same about Bob Dylan - almost as if there's an idea that presenting a song with a voice like Jocelyn Brown's or Roy Orbison's would somehow detract from the message?!

And anyone else who doesn’t simply hold a note; just because you can whizz up and down a scale, doesn’t mean you should.

Ugh, it's the vocal equivalent of when tedious lounge pianists keep running their hands up and down the whole length of the keyboard, as if it's somehow original, artistic, impressive or even sounds at all nice.

I forget which comedy show it was, but I heard a comment about them introducing a new Brit award (to make up for the reduction in number following merging the male and female categories) for 'Best New Album by Adele' and I thought that was strangely prescient!

Rosesareyellow · 21/12/2021 15:04

Sam Smith, James Arthur and Will Young - soooo whiny.
Also Jess Glynn, but I can’t pin point why. Just grates on me - maybe because of that incredibly dull Xmas song she’s done that keeps returning now at this time of year.

Jessie J 🤢
Oh god yes Jessie J! Absolutely horrid singer, there was a video of her years ago just saying no over and over made me want to burst my own ear drums, that price tag song is without doubt one of the worst songs of all time and she had the never to sing it ACOUSTIC Somehow she made the word 'price' 30 seconds long so beyond dreadful.
isacurlypotatoaquaver · 21/12/2021 15:13

Jason derisory ... that bit he says when he says his name. And I hate how Sean Paul says his name in songs haha

LadyCatStark · 21/12/2021 15:14

@ButterflyBitch

Sam smith. He just sounds like he’s whining. The woman who sings dance monkey, don’t know who it is. She doesn’t sound like she’s pronouncing words properly and it irritates me. Then it irritates me more that the song is so catchy.
Yes! That’s who I wan trying to think of, the Dance Monkey lady.

And yes to Sam Smith, he’s my least favourite singer ever, so bloody whiny. On the radio yesterday the DJ said something about Christmas cheer then started playing his Christmas song; the least cheerful Christmas song ever!

Heartofglass12345 · 21/12/2021 15:17

Oh my god I love sharleen, I had a crush on her for years when I was a teen (still do in my 30's haha)

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 21/12/2021 15:17

Sam Smith really grates

trackand · 21/12/2021 15:18

Unpopular opinion but... Adele

toldgoodDog · 21/12/2021 15:19

Daaaavid Grey. Have to turn the radio off.
Same goes for U2, but that's not the voice per se, I cannae abide Bono.

Not really, she's probably "winning" this thread 😂
MrsMadderRose · 21/12/2021 15:24

Some of my faves have been mentioned on this thread! Love bjork, Taylor swift and Freddie mercury. But I can’t bear:

Ed Sheeran - aaaargh, presented as if he’s a folksy singer songwriter when actually his songs all sound like manufactured pap and his voice is boring. And I can’t stand the line about “my bedsheets smell like you” - while I understand the sentiment, it’s just so badly written and makes me think of a sweaty bloke grubbing around and sniffing the sheets. Just ugh.

Ellie Goulding - like listening to an actual wet lettuce, what’s all the fuss about? And her fake lips annoy me, they were nice before. None of my business I know.

Little mix - i actually like some of their songs but the singing style! Why do singers have to do that kind of breathy strangulated thing as if they’re sobbing?

Michael bubble - sorry love but you’re actually not frank sinatra.

Abracadabra12345 · 21/12/2021 15:25

@Crinkle77

Rod Stewart is just awful. He's got this horrible scratch sounding voice. Also any of those women on reality shows like The Voice or X Factor who think a good singer is just someone who can shout the loudest.
I loathe the diva shouty screamy voices which so often is played in shops. Makes my ears bleed.
MrsMadderRose · 21/12/2021 15:30

Oh and absolutely Kate Bush. I know people passionately adore her but I’ve never got why. Her voice is so pouty, it reminds me of a shrieking toddler having a paddy.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 21/12/2021 15:34

Marty Pellow.
I can't understand a word the man sings.
"Wigan woogie wishing well, I stiloe pharted..."

Jessie J 🤢
"n-n-n-n-noo, n-n-n-n-nooooo, seems like everybody's gyaaat a price, HEY!"

she's fucking annoying as shit lol

Pemba · 21/12/2021 15:40

Neil Young, such a whiny nasal voice. I am quite conflicted though, because he wrote some absolutely beautiful classic songs with profound lyrics. Just should have got in another singer!

Agree that Cilla Black couldn't sing. Nails down a blackboard etc. I can't believe that in the UK in the 60s, apparently Cilla's version of hits like 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' were preferred to Dionne Warwick's.
I much preferred Sheridan Smith's version in the recent-ish ITV drama about Cilla to the original. Sheridan's voice is much more pleasant.

Yep! She's so screechy too.

Honestly so warbly and horrible! Ruined Rhydian's performance imo

QuestionableMouse · 21/12/2021 15:53

@RobertSmithsLipstick

Who is the woman who sings "I'm like a bird, I'll only fly away"? Whoever, I don't like her voice.
nelly furtado!
