Dd 18 has PT job in restaurant. Would I be U to ask dd to cancel her shifts Fri and Sat night? We are planning to see family in England over Xmas, 400 miles away, leaving Monday.

We have booked holiday cottage, Tesco order etc and I don't want to have to cancel if dd catches Covid!!

Help - wwyd?

no, of course not....its her job

OldEvilOwl · 16/12/2021 18:43

If you want her to keep said job, no.

Yes you would be unreasonable. That's her job and she'll already be scheduled in for the shifts. It'll leave the restaurant short staffed and I don't think they'll be impressed with her.

Howshouldibehave · 16/12/2021 18:44

I would imagine she’ll be sacked if she refuses to work just before Xmas!

ANameChangeAgain · 16/12/2021 18:45

You wouldn't be setting a very good example! You can't ask her to throw her job away.

Fr0thandBubble · 16/12/2021 18:46

YABU

StonewalledNameChange · 16/12/2021 18:46

Depends whether it would have an impact on her job / future shifts offered.

Depends whether she can easily afford to forego the money.

Depends whether you’re suggesting asking her (“how would you feel about not working this weekend...”) or telling her (“please don’t work this weekend... if I have to cancel because you’ve needlessly exposed yourself I’m going to be really fed up...”)

A580Hojas · 16/12/2021 18:48

How can you think it's ok for restaurant staff to just "cancel" their shifts?

thetinsoldier · 16/12/2021 18:51

Ok, ok, just asking!! All right.

Its her job, she has to go, but get the disposable surgical masks for her to wear rather than fabric so she has a bit more protection, or the type you can get from B&Q with a filter that would be worn when working with harmful substances.

thetinsoldier · 16/12/2021 18:52

But when she agreed to work weeks ago, the situation with omicron wasn't anything like it is now. I think our family xmas is more important than her job... 🤔

OP posts:
thetinsoldier · 16/12/2021 18:53

But I know - normally I would not be getting dd to let work down...

OP posts:
Uninterested · 16/12/2021 18:53

What does she think?

luverlybubberly · 16/12/2021 18:54

Yabu
If she's caught it she would have caught it already as it takes a few days to show on tests.

user33323 · 16/12/2021 18:55

So you've read nothing about the hospitality crisis in the news OP?

luverlybubberly · 16/12/2021 18:55

Would you pay her for the income that she didn't earn? Is she rostered over NY/NYE? There might be someone who would want a swap

thetinsoldier · 16/12/2021 18:56

Yes of course I have, thanks, but I'm also selfishly thinking about seeing my family who we haven't seen for 9 months...

GotToGoBye · 16/12/2021 18:56

Yabu I think it’s a bad example to set.

00100001 · 16/12/2021 18:57

But she could catch covid from college...

thetinsoldier · 16/12/2021 18:57

She is working over NY too. I'm fine with that as we don't have a holiday planned right after it.

She sees our POV, just doesn't want to let work down.

OP posts:
Suzi888 · 16/12/2021 18:57

A bit unreasonable, she could ask I suppose….

thetinsoldier · 16/12/2021 18:57

She asked friends if anyone can swap...

OP posts:
Brewandhoney · 16/12/2021 18:58

and what do you expect the restaurant to do to cover her shift at such short notice? that’s a really shitty thing to do, whatever her age.

thetinsoldier · 16/12/2021 18:59

But she could easily test positive any day, then the restaurant would have to find cover.

The manager should have thought about this ages ago and found more waitresses...
