I love the crazy conspiracy theories. So my favourite ones are that birds arent real and that Paul McCartney is dead and the man we see now is a lookalike.
What about you?

Also look up Boltzmann Brain theory (which is also discussed on Monkey Cage). You could end up down a real rabbit hole if you wanted! Personally I have no real opinion either way but find it scary!

RestingMurderousFace · 07/12/2021 11:34

If the moon landing was true, why has it never been done again?

Triffid1 · 07/12/2021 11:36

@Planesmistakenforstars

That the CIA wrote the Scorpions song "Wind of Change" as part of their propaganda campaign to bring down the USSR. I do think it's very plausible, and I lean towards believing it
Ooh, that reminds me. Wasn't there some thing about Hotel California actually being a satanic song and that if you played it backwards you could hear the words?
Rivermonsters · 07/12/2021 11:38

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Missing 411 theory

Brane, not brain, isn't it?

The book "Voodoo Histories" by David Aaronovitch is a very good read for the genuinely interested. He investigates modern theories and provides facts to debunk them, includes things like Marilyn Monroe's death, the JFK assassination, 9/11, the Obama 'birthers', the suicide of Dr. David Kelly as well as other theories.

It doesn't cover the theory that Titanic was actually her sister ship Olympic, but that has been massively debunked elsewhere in any case. The Titanic was only ever the Titanic and the Olympic remained in active service until being scrapped and finally demolished in 1937.

It's very hard to debate rationally with die-hard conspiracy theorists. For the most part they are simply unable (or unwilling) to accept anything that deviates from or disproves their belief. I just listen and don't respond. I don't want to engage in that sort of argument, and they will always have to have the last word. You can offer proof and salient information, but it's very hard to coax someone out of a rabbit-hole, however dark and twisting it clearly is.

If the moon landing was true, why has it never been done again?
Great question. Er - it has been. A further five times (crewed), a handful of uncrewed ones, and a few aborted missions (Apollo 13 being the most notable - you might remember it being made it into a moderately successful motion picture starring a gentleman called Tom Hanks) 🙄

There are lots of reasons they stopped the program - the launches kept going wrong, for one thing, and it's (obviously) eye-wateringly expensive. Americans had also lost their taste for it - there were more pressing domestic and international concerns, and they felt they'd stick it to the Ruskies enough for the time being.

thestarvingcaterpillar · 07/12/2021 11:44

I used to go out with someone who didn't believe in dinosaurs or in fact in anything before he was born - he literally thought that the world began when he was born and would end when he died. I never really managed to get my head around it and still can't now.
Not exactly a conspiracy theory but I'm sure he isn't the only person out there who thinks like this!

StormTreader · 07/12/2021 11:45

Mitchell and Webb did an excellent sketch on the fake moon landing conspiracy

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 07/12/2021 11:47

@Westfacing

Regarding the moon landings - for the umpteenth time can I say that the Soviet Union was the first country in space and expected to be the first to land on the moon. They were very sore that the US beat them to it - do you think they didn't track every inch of its progress and scrutinise the technology. The idea that would let the US get away with a fake claim is laughable.

Or were they in on the conspiracy too?

Exactly, for all the US knew Russia would have a man on the moon a matter of days later. It would have been hugely risky to fake the moon landings. Imagine if Russia discovered the US never made it to the moon, they wouldn't have kept quiet, it would have been huge politically.

However it doesn't necessarily mean that the footage wasn't faked. It is arguably plausible that NASA may have created footage on earth because of the potential difficulty in transmitting live footage back to earth.

Leftbutcameback · 07/12/2021 11:50

Just looked up the Simon Dorante-Day story and was briefly interested until
It turned out he's only 16 years younger than Charles, who is clearly not his father!!

loveandkindness · 07/12/2021 11:52

It wasn't the real queen who recently threw her weight behind global warming. The imposter Issued a statement from Buckingham Palace with its 775 rooms, claiming they all have to do their bit for the environment.

Stuckhere2021 · 07/12/2021 11:52
@Stuckhere2021 your BIL has some sort of a point. Hillary Clinton is an evil witch who has lots of secrets to hide
I hope you this is a joke comment! Do people really believe this sort of stuff?

Werehamster · 07/12/2021 11:54

@TheRealMrsGrissom

Not really a conspiracy theory but my mum believed that Stevie Wonder wasn’t really blind and it was just a gimmick when he first started in the music industry to make him stand out. His worldwide fame then meant he’s had to continue the fake blindness.
I've read the same about Helen Keller!
PinkPlantCase · 07/12/2021 11:59

That the Pfizer vaccine could make you grow a tail 🤣🤣

Me and DH are still waiting for ours to appear.

@RestingMurderousFace

Politics and Money…

Pretty much the whole driver for Apollo was the Cold War and the US demonstrating American to technological superiority by beating the Soviets to the Moon.

Once the US had “won” the Moon race there was little if any political will to spend any more money on continuing the program.

With a few major tweaks and a lot of money it’s been possible to go back to the Moon for years but as they used to say “no bucks, no Buck Rogers”.

Rivermonsters · 07/12/2021 12:03

@Stuckhere2021 her making nasty comments towards Monica and the other women that her sex pest husband has abused, her making comments towards a 12 year old rape victim…Benghazi and the email scandal. So yeh she clearly has a lot to hide

Rivermonsters · 07/12/2021 12:05

@Stuckhere2021 Yes ur BILs comments about the tunnels is a bit far fetched but she’s still a very sketchy and evil woman Imo

That sounds more like some sort of weird psychological problem than a conspiracy theorist.

Though I suppose it's true that it's hard to rigorously prove the existence of anything outside of one's own consciousness. Grin

HectorPlasm · 07/12/2021 12:06

No-one has mentioned Obama's birth certificate yet?

HectorPlasm · 07/12/2021 12:09

Ooh - and the disappearance of Shergar!

Its expensive.
thestarvingcaterpillar · 07/12/2021 12:13

Its very easy to get confused and lost in big wild spaces like those found in North America. Factor in for medical emergencies, I'm surprised its not more people that go missing in ''strange'' circumstances in these spaces.

Tragic, but doubtful there is anything more to it than that.

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 07/12/2021 12:16

@MamaWeasel

I thought the Titanic one was proven to be true Blush I watched a very compelling programme about it
Can you link the programme? I remember reading about it and was very interested.
