Might seem a daft request but I have neither in my home so these would be nice to see, especially at this time of year when flames and warmth are needed the most. Cats and dogs in the pictures, making the most of it all, are welcome 🙂.

I'm going to piss on your chips. 😞

Wood burners look cute but they're contributing to making us sick.

"DEFRA's Clean Air Strategy states that wood-burning stove emissions are now the biggest source of PM pollution in the UK, making up 38% of UK air pollution."

"A 2021 report from the European Environmental Bureau also states that even Ecodesign stoves produce a high level of fine PM pollution, which is dangerous for human health."

www.which.co.uk/reviews/wood-burning-stoves/article/wood-burning-stoves-what-you-need-to-know/stoves-and-pollution-aIPXC8g7lbu5

"Particulate matter is one of the most problematic pollutants in London today and has been associated with a range of conditions, including decreased lung development and function, exacerbation of asthma, allergies, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder), pulmonary fibrosis and an increased risk of lung cancer. It is also linked with increased morbidity and mortality."

I suppose many pleasurable things have a downside.

They are usually all over the front lawn at dawn and dusk.

Our property and view is truly spectacular, we are very lucky. It’s very green in winter, but does turn golden in summer. We’re about an hour north of Melbourne airport, in a wine region.

We’re lucky to have about 30 acres of timber to feed the fire. My niece in the UK has a wood fire and I was shocked at the cost of buying wood, how do you all get wood for the fire?

Amazing to have kangaroos outside your windows 😄

We live very rurally and also have our own supply of wood - although not quite 30 acres, lol - so just have to chop it and store till seasoned. I'm often seen trundling wheelbarrows of logs from the chopping area to one of the wood stores!

Buying it is ridiculously expensive, yes....

WildRosie · 27/10/2022 23:33

Are coffee logs any good ? Or wine logs ? I've seen coffee logs in the shops but I'd not heard of wine logs until a few minutes ago.

Seemed a wee shame that no-one had answered you.

I don’t know like cause I’ve not used them though 😂

I’m currently burning trees I cleared from mine when I moved in (had been empty a few years so was a bit overgrown) and I’ve got a tree from a farm up the road drying already for next year and I’ve dibs on one my friend is planning on cutting down sometime soonish.

You also occasionally get Facebook ads for trees people have cut down - they offer them for free because it’s cheaper for them than paying to get rid of it.

It’s mostly softwood and just dried out by leaving it, so obviously not as good as buying kiln dried hardwood... but it’s free...so 😊 we bought some smokeless coal last year to mix in and haven’t used half of it yet.

WildRosie · 28/10/2022 18:34

Mankind has been burning wood for heat and light since God was a boy, whether softwood or hardwood. Some wood is useless for fires, e.g. poplar whereas ash and beech are great. Some apparently are toxic and really not suitable for wood burners. I think laburnum and yew.

It's been more than a month since the last post and about a year since the first. Any more pictures?

Loving these photos, especially all the snug cats and dogs. Mine's electric but it does the job!

@WildRosie Less about the fire (a very old gas fire in a 1930s rental I've since left) and more about the pet challenge. 3 Gerbils on their favourite cushion in front of the fire FTW!

I suppose gerbils are desert natives so the heat of the sun should make them appreciate a fire!

My fireplace isn’t functional at the moment, so cat is taking advantage of his sofa in front of the radiator and the heated throw on my sofa 🐾 💕

These cats all seem satisfied. Anywhere comfy and cosy will do.

Yup, cats aren’t stupid. I want to be a cat in my next life!

We can't have a log burner here 😭 so we got one of these. Bloody marvellous and by christ they kick out some heat.

Justthisonce12 · 12/12/2022 22:23

I have a biofuel one which is great but one of the ceramic logs caught fire at the weekend and filled the house with smoke. Not sure how i feel about using it anymore

Splendid and very much needed right now. I wish we could have a fire in our workplace, especially as the single industrial fan heater isn't up to the job!

WildRosie · 18/12/2022 18:11

Forgive the fireguard. It's not my fire so I decided not to move it but you get the idea. Where I am tonight we have freezing fog and freezing rain so I believe I'll sit here for a wee while.

Still a little too mild for fires just now. Temperatures forecast in the low 70s this coming weekend. Won't be long though. Cats and dogs, stand by!

@WildRosie have mine on. Mine is a eye sore. Thinking about getting it boxed in next year.

Dog asleep beside it 😴
