Might seem a daft request but I have neither in my home so these would be nice to see, especially at this time of year when flames and warmth are needed the most. Cats and dogs in the pictures, making the most of it all, are welcome 🙂.

There's something life-affirming about a fireplace with burning coals and logs, especially with cats and dogs on the hearth rug.

The wood I used to collect from behind the house used to burn quickly, as beech often does. I guess it was already dead and had been seasoning outdoors for years before Mother Nature conveniently dumped it before me. We used to get logs delivered too. They were ash and apparently already seasoned and ready to burn but they weren't as flamey and fiery as the stuff I collected. I used to quite enjoy collecting firewood and even bought an axe for chopping the bigger pieces. Apart from that it didn't cost a penny and was quite a healthy pastime.

Shmith adorable 😍😍.

Op we have an electric fake one.
I've been desperate for a fire for years, it was like another family member when I was growing up. I absolutely adored our fire place it was amazing.
We just can't get anything into our house now it would cost a fortune so in desperation I got one of those fake plug in things and to be honest honest it's not bad at all and I got a fire place surround on ebay for it.

We burn scavenged wood & kindling. Seasoned 6m I suppose. Lots of garden rubbish, pallets, too.

We burn smokeless fuel, but use some sticks and a firelighter to get it going.

Use Hobrite to clean the glass as it gets it nice and clean.

Ours is fairly plain. This is last night, just before I fell asleep in front of it!

I used to find our fire burned best on cold, clear and still nights. Strong winds were the enemy as smoke used to blow back down the chimney making the front room purgatory. Perhaps the old man should have had the chimney properly prepared, i.e. lining and rotary cowling before we had the old gas fire taken out.

There is something very charming about having the fire lit, warm room, Xmas tree twinkling, room side lights on low, and a glass of wine in front of a movie.

WildRosie · 05/12/2021 21:41

Keep the pictures coming. They are very easy on one's eyes.

Open fires are really inefficient, twenty percent in the room, eighty percent up the chimney, woodburners are the opposite, twenty percent up the chimney and eighty percent up the room, but the chimney needs to be properly lined and insulated.

@Cocolapew

I have a pretend fire but a real dog 🤗
wow - love what you have created there!
Catsandslippers · 05/12/2021 21:53

My little fluff loves ours. Such a nice way to spend a winter evening, getting cosy with the wood burner on!

That sounds reasonable. If only we'd known that 35 years ago.

Our dogs were very switched on to all things pyrotechnical. Once they saw me walking from the garage to the front room carrying sticks and a full coal bucket, they followed me back and forth until the fire was lighted. Then the cat would appear with his pointy claws...

Could you tell me which one you have? We can't have one for all sorts of reasons, but I'd really like a cosy focus for my sitting room!
