I’m an adult and I don’t have an advent calendar 🙋🏻‍♀️

I just don’t get them nor want one. Sometimes some of the things look nice but there’s invariably things I don’t want in there. I like using the same skincare not random bits and bobs. One year I shared a body shop calendar with my teen daughter and I’m still trying to use up tiny shower gels. I see so many threads, surely I’m not the only adult out there without one!

We always make the kids’ advent calendar (kitchen roll Snowmen this year), so I suppose I could add a chocolate very easily for myself, it would be a treat actually as was never allowed chocolate calendars when they first started when I was growing up…I just don’t associate advent calendars with adults whatsoever and I’ve been an adult for a long time hahaha. I tend to feel the concept of ever-more-tat-and-costly adult advent calendars are a capitalist’s wet dream. But I’m a tad Bah Humbug anyways.

My mother in law gets me the M&S beauty advent calendar every year. I use everything in there and enjoy trying something new every day.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 02/12/2021 13:09

For the last few years lovely DH has bought me a chocolate advent calendar. I always get bored by the 12th and let the kids share it along with their own.

This year I am newly diabetic and the soppy sod brought home a cheese advent calendar knowing I can't have the chocolate.

No way am I getting bored of this little gem!!

@MrsSkylerWhite

When did adults start having advent calendars? No problem with it, just didn’t realise people did.
I never stopped!!!!

(Only ever have a chocolate one though).

My mum used to buy me one every year even after I moved out, when she died my Dad carried on the tradition and since he died my DH does it Grin

people forget that Easter eggs were only for kids until recently, too! It’s only within the last fifteen years that there was a big push to market “adult” Easter eggs and it became a big thing. Advent calendars too.

See, I don't get this.

What's the difference between an "adult" Easter egg and and a "kids" Easter egg?

Chocolate is chocolate, no?

CrimbleCrumble1 · 02/12/2021 14:59

I didn’t know advent calendars were a DC thing I thought they were a Christmas thing. Oh hang on I forgot Christmas is only for children , tough luck to anyone who doesn’t have DC.

Until the mid-2000s Easter eggs were normally just the cheap chocolate ones marketed at kids.

Then companies like hotel chocolat and Lindt etc started marketing “luxury” Easter eggs for grown-ups that cost £10, £20 etc. And adults started buying them and it became a big market.

Grown-ups didn’t really get or eat Easter eggs when I was a child and teenager. They were a kids’ thing, Cadbury’s buttons and so on. Creme eggs were marketed at adults, but you didn’t see the big expensive luxury egg thing.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 02/12/2021 15:02

I definitely remember my mum scoffing Easter eggs in the 70’s.

Hmm I beg to differ.

I remember my grandad used to get me the biggest Easter egg he could find every year as a child, they usually were what people would class as luxury chocolates (at the time) and cost around £10.

My dad used to always get my mum a big chocolate egg too.

That was in the 80's and 90's.......

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 02/12/2021 16:18

I remember 'fancy' Easter eggs in my 80s childhood. My parents definitely partook.

Deadringer · 02/12/2021 16:20

I am 57 and got my first one this year, a beauty one. I am pleased with it fir the novelty of it but it isn't something i would bother with every year.

Gruffalosgrandma · 02/12/2021 16:23

I have my very first advent calendar this year and I'm ridiculously pleased with it.

Mudbomb · 02/12/2021 16:31

I have one, I'd prefer a savory one though, and a whole calendar for each day of the month 🤪

We were deprived up in the North, clearly 🤣
Kezzie200 · 02/12/2021 21:11

I had a Molton Brown one a few years ago. I bought it half price in November (it was the previous years version).

It was really nice but because there was a lot I wouldn't have bought half price was about right!

Two major priced items was the Rose and the Tobacco perfume spray. Neither I would have bought although they are OK.

Justonedayatatime11 · 02/12/2021 22:57

I have the Joe & Sephs popcorn one. Only 2 days in and I think it's the best one I've ever bought!

Agadorsparticus · 03/12/2021 07:10

My Mum still buys me and DH one every year. I'm 40.

drspouse · 06/12/2021 10:18

So what are we going to do with 24 mini Bonne Maman jars?

KeyLimeFly · 06/12/2021 10:19

My kids don’t even have them, let alone me 😂

GTAlogic · 06/12/2021 17:02

Sell them on eBay. People buy them for homemade candles or whatever.
mbosnz · 06/12/2021 17:52

With reference to Easter eggs, I was a '70's brat in NZ, and Mum and Dad got a big luxury Easter egg for themselves, we got a slightly smaller one, and loads of marshmallow and miniature eggs.

drspouse · 06/12/2021 18:26

Seriously @GTAlogic? Great!

GerardWay123 · 06/12/2021 18:33

Me, DH, 2 adult children. 'Vintage' fabric advent calendar full of dog treats. Nothing for humans.

Flingingmelon · 08/12/2021 12:58

@ColettesEarrings and anyone else who invested in the Tony Chocoloney one - have you opened todays door yet?

No spoilers but my DS8 will be a bit surprised.

ColettesEarrings · 08/12/2021 13:04

@Flingingmelon Yes! Important to read the accompanying days text on the flap!
