I’m an adult and I don’t have an advent calendar 🙋🏻‍♀️

I just don’t get them nor want one. Sometimes some of the things look nice but there’s invariably things I don’t want in there. I like using the same skincare not random bits and bobs. One year I shared a body shop calendar with my teen daughter and I’m still trying to use up tiny shower gels. I see so many threads, surely I’m not the only adult out there without one!

@Lifewith

What a strange thread If you don't want one, don't get one.
Why is it strange?

I find it interesting when cultural traditions change, especially under the pressure of commercial interests. People have short memories, and it’s also quite interesting how “new” commercial traditions get accepted and normalised (see also: Black Friday, unknown in the U.K. ten years ago; Elf on the Shelf; expensive Easter eggs for adults).

If you’re not interested in this, no problem. So why post on a thread for people who are?

Aposterhasnoname · 01/12/2021 09:13

I don’t have one, (well, one from the postcode lottery but it’s shit). I do hanker after an old fashioned glittery one with random pictures under the doors. Maybe I’ll see if I can find one next year.

Good gifts do charitable ones if that floats anyone's boat?

@Aposterhasnoname me too!

TwinklyBranch · 01/12/2021 09:17

I've got 2 chocolate ones (one for home and one for the "office" which is also currently home Grin) but I wouldn't want one with 24 tea bags/beauty products/cheeses or whatever. Not least because they seem very expensive for what you get.

PatterPaws · 01/12/2021 09:17

This should be an AMA, OP. Grin

corblimeygov · 01/12/2021 09:20

I bought everyone else one, even a beer one for DH. None of them bought me one. But I don't mind. ( yeah ok I do mind but hey, that's life!)

Zogthebiggestdragon · 01/12/2021 09:21

I got myself a playmobil Back to the Future advent calendar. Got one last year and it really brightened up a shitty December so I'm looking forward to this years!

GodIsAVegan · 01/12/2021 09:22

I don’t have one, I would if I saw one that I thought looked good but all the ones I’ve seen don’t interest me. I still look every year thinking this will be the year I find one I like.
Kids still have chocolate ones and we fill our own ones with drawers for them, with various bits like a Costa voucher, lip balms, stationery, £10 cash and sweets.

SanFranBear · 01/12/2021 09:25

I don't have one but would really like one... just one with pictures, not stuff. I meant to get one and time ran away from me... must plan better for next year!

Ceramide · 01/12/2021 09:26

I used to love the picture ones as a child. I've never taken to the gifty ones, not because I don't like chocolate/beauty stuff, but it just doesn't have the magic about it.

maofteens · 01/12/2021 09:26

My daughter and I are sharing a Bonne Mammon one, though the idea we'd have toast and a different jam every morning when in reality we are rushing to get out of the house at 7.30 to catch the train for school was a tad optimistic.
I like them (we also have one on the wall) as it's a decorative feature.

foxgoosefinch · 01/12/2021 09:39

You can get lovely picture ones - try National Trust shops, JL, Cotswold Trading.

DD decided that she wants a picture one plus a chocolate one plus a Lego one. So this year she has collected four of the bloody things so far from various relatives - two picture ones, a Harry Potter one and a chocolate one. It’s too much!

It’s a nice gesture for family members to get them for her, but the upshot is a spoiled kid and morning shouting at her to get dressed instead of playing with the little Lego bits. Argh! Next year I am going to put a ban on more than one advent calendar.

vampirethriller · 01/12/2021 09:39

I like a cheap kids chocolate one myself.

Minceandonions · 01/12/2021 09:47

We haven't got one either. And neither has the dog!
I'm not counting down to Santa coming, as I'm an adult!
I know what I like and will buy it. So I dont need to try 25 varieties of gin, or 25 different beauty products, generating a mass of plastic waste that will go straight to landfill.

Cherrytart23 · 01/12/2021 09:55

I have a chocolate 1 but that's only because it was a spare 1 I picked up for another child they didn't need it. This said my dd opened it this morning after hers.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 01/12/2021 09:55

@Footprintsinthegrass

I don't bother for me. I think the bigger adult ones are ridiculous. Perfume, gin, makeup. How does anyone have money left for Christmas?
It's not the money which bothers me. It's the waste and the plastic.
drspouse · 01/12/2021 09:58
@drspouse
Which yarn advent calendar did you get? I'm trying to decide whether to look for any that are still on sale.
I got the Wee Country Yarns and it makes a cowl with a pattern each day. I didn't get wrapped (mine is actually the 2019 one). I have the day off and I'm supposed to be clearing out the play room but I'm about to cast on!

I agree completely especially as for me Advent is a religious time and it started on the 28th November this year!

I think it is ridiculous having all these pre Christmas purchases and expectations. It must cost a fortune before getting to Christmas I saw one that was over £200. Then there is Christmas bedding, pyjamas, Eve boxes, Elf on the shelf and eventually Christmas Day where a lot of people go overboard. All commercial hype. I am glad my children grew up in a different time. Some families must spend all year paying for it.

Some probably think I am Bah Humbug but you would be wrong I love Christmas. I am busy preparing for it by making Mincemeat, Christmas Cakes, Gingerbread biscuits as gifts, knitting scarves for a challenge and all will be given to the homeless, Refuges and food banks.

Our children ( adults) will get gifts of walking socks, magazine subscriptions and some Christmas treats. They say we don’t need anything so we think of something to give them and they will enjoy. We don’t expect expensive gifts either as our main gift is to have them around the table.

Redsquirrel5 · 01/12/2021 10:09

That too MLM.

I had a paper one that was brought out each year until they fell to bits. We can buy them at church for £1:65😃

RogueV · 01/12/2021 10:15

I used to buy them for myself.

But now I use the money to buy a luxury perfume or other beauty product that I actually want and will use rather than tiddly little sample sizes that I ended up passing on to friends and famili

Chesneyhawkes1 · 01/12/2021 10:19

I'm 42 and my Mum still buys me one 😊

Floralnomad · 01/12/2021 10:25

I haven’t got an advent calendar , nor has my husband . Our daughter has one and we made one for the dog as we couldn’t find a shop bought one that would suit him .

CrimbleCrumble1 · 01/12/2021 10:31

I have four, a William Morris toiletry one (it’s beautiful), 2 candle ones and a Lindt one. We are a family of all adults and have 9 between us, a wine one from Aldi looks particularly good.
We decided last year to spend less on Christmas presents and more on advent calendars as we enjoy them so much.

peboh · 01/12/2021 10:32

I've never not had one, and will always buy for both dd and dh too. At this point, it's just a nice little tradition and I can't see myself not ever stopping buying them for all of us, even when she's an adult herself haha.
