I’m an adult and I don’t have an advent calendar 🙋🏻‍♀️

I just don’t get them nor want one. Sometimes some of the things look nice but there’s invariably things I don’t want in there. I like using the same skincare not random bits and bobs. One year I shared a body shop calendar with my teen daughter and I’m still trying to use up tiny shower gels. I see so many threads, surely I’m not the only adult out there without one!

I always get one for teen/adult dc and Dh (chocolate ones) but haven’t had one myself in at least 25 years.
I’m having a really hard time at the moment so treated myself to an m and s one.

mbosnz · 01/12/2021 10:35

We find it hard to get through the winter over here, and advent calendars give us a little bit of joy in the dark and the cold!

DH has his red wine one, I have my Skin care one, and I do both girls an advent calendar where they get a clue as to where their little advent gift will be hidden, and I collect random bits and bobs through the year for it.

But I'm a complete kid when it comes to Christmas, always have been, always will be! Grin

Wimpeyspread · 01/12/2021 10:37

There are some good ones out there - my kids are in their 30s and I have got them various - coffee, Aldi wine, spice/recipes, Lego, gin, model kit (new part each day). They have bought me gin, tea and yarn. It brightens up December, which for me is a stressful and depressing month

I've got a Tony Chocoloney one! So there! 🤣

No! I meant to order one but forgot.

My Mum has bought me a Pukka tea one, a different herbal tea to try for each day, really love it.
I bought myself a Toblerone as it was all Tesco had left.

SelfHelpPlease · 01/12/2021 10:39

I've never had an "adult" advent calendar but I've been tempted to buy a cadburys chocolate one Grin

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/12/2021 10:39

I bought the Bonne Maman one for my parents as they're jam fiends.

I'm calendarless though.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 01/12/2021 10:42

+StrychnineInTheSandwiches* the jam one sounds good then you could have a different little jar on your toast each morning.

SpeckledlyHen · 01/12/2021 10:42

We all have one including the dog. Ours our refillable and come out every year, they are wooden or felt so no plastic and I buy good quality chocolate (hotel chocolat or Charbonnel) and fill them and dog treats in the one for the dog.

Yeah, it's got lots of different flavours that you don't see in the shops. Smile

I get advent calendars for my birthday as it’s the end of November. I love them - it carries on my birthday for an entire month 😂

My dad got me a Liberty one (it’s a birthday with a zero on, so a treat) my sister got me a Lindor one and DH got me the Aldi gin one

I got him an Aldi beer one but it’s a 12 days of Xmas one rather than advent. It was £25 so not extortionate for 12 cans of beer

I think they’re fun, and there are loads of things people waste money on, so I refuse to feel any shame 😃

irregularegular · 01/12/2021 10:48

I wouldn't have thought most adults have them?? But maybe I am out of touch.

The last couple of years I had a whim to get myself a very lovely picture advent calendar. Designed/produced by an independent artist who I also buy card from. I enjoyed those but haven't bought one this year.

I'm afraid I think that most commercial advent calendars, especially for adults. are pointless, over priced, and contribute to over consumption and waste. Surely Christmas itself is enough?

I love Christmas. I love the build up. Candles, music, the tree, parties, food, wrapping presents, Christmas films - but not buying more stuff.

irregularegular · 01/12/2021 10:51

We do have an advent candle.

stingofthebutterfly · 01/12/2021 11:00

I don't need bits of tat, and I have chocolate in the cupboard. I've also spent enough on advent calendars for my children and enjoy watching them open them instead.

labazslovesliving · 01/12/2021 11:01

they weren't a thing when my kids were young then I started to buy for the grandkids but don't now.
we always had an advent candle which I had not had for ages but the other day I saw one in the paper shop so I bought one for myself as a nostalgic treat
got a pound advent calendar for the dogs from poundshop

LandoMilkNHoneyBadger · 01/12/2021 11:58

I am also an adult and I have ended up with 4 Blush DH and I have both got Cadbury heroes ones, he got one for our unborn baby which I'll obviously have to eat, my friend in Finland sent me a Fazer one (as well as a Moomin one for my 2yo) and my nan still likes to get me one every year even though I'm 28 Grin

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/12/2021 12:00

I got the same one for my Mum and me last year because we were all staying at home in order to have a Christmas Day together and I thought it would be fun for us. She enjoyed it so I did the same this year. I got Rituals last year and L'Occitane this year.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 01/12/2021 12:04

BlackAmericanoNoSugar that sounds lovely.

TrueGrit54 · 01/12/2021 12:06

No, doesn’t interest me. I get a Lego one and a chocolate one for the teenagers every year. They love them. No problem with adults having them, just not my thing.

Roominmyhouse · 01/12/2021 12:16

I usually get chocolate ones for me and DH but hadn’t this year. But this thread inspired me so have just treated DH to the snaffling pig one and me to a reeses peanut butter cup one! They won’t come until Friday but that means we get to have extra treats then!

Ceramide · 01/12/2021 13:17

How long does it take to burn one day on the Advent Candle? They look lovely but I always picture myself lighting it, then getting distracted by a phone call or getting dinner, to find it's gone down by several days!

picklemewalnuts · 01/12/2021 14:10

Opposite problem, Ceramide. You actually forget for a couple of days then spend hours trying to catch up.

I burn ours while we eat, which is about right. If we are out and about and miss a night, I light it while I'm cooking so get caught up by the time dinner's done.

soughsigh · 01/12/2021 14:27

@picklemewalnuts We have the same issue with the advent candle 😂. End up spending hours burning several days at once.

I have a reusable fabric advent calendar which I fill from a box of chocolates. The cheap shop bought ones always taste so nasty.

CinnamonEstella · 01/12/2021 15:01

I don't have one and never have in adulthood.

To me, it's against the spirit of Advent to get a present every day. My mum never allowed chocolate ones growing up, and presents seem even more extravagant.

I've seen you can get 12 days of Christmas calendars though - I would quite like one of those to celebrate from 25th - 6th Jan, so I suppose I'm not inherently against the principle, just think Advent is not the time for it.

Sn0tnose · 01/12/2021 15:02

I usually have a Lindt one and DH has something different every year. This year it’s a teabag one from the RSPB.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 01/12/2021 15:09

I was given one in November and I ate it all last week. These are the things you can do as an undisciplined adult. I never want another one as I felt sick.
