I’m an adult and I don’t have an advent calendar 🙋🏻‍♀️

I just don’t get them nor want one. Sometimes some of the things look nice but there’s invariably things I don’t want in there. I like using the same skincare not random bits and bobs. One year I shared a body shop calendar with my teen daughter and I’m still trying to use up tiny shower gels. I see so many threads, surely I’m not the only adult out there without one!

Why would an adult need one? They're for kids not grown adults.*
Why aren’t they for anybody?
Why would a kid need one?

We don’t need

GodIsAVegan · 01/12/2021 18:07

*their and theirs

NoWigNoWit · 01/12/2021 18:31

I’ve never had one as an adult so this year I thought ‘fuck it’ and got myself a cheese one!

Bloody lovely it is! Today I had an Applesby Cheshire Grin

I have a refillable one for every family member - me included. Why not? I'd rather spend a little more on chocolates we like than the cheap stuff and the waste from these is minimal. Plus, they have, by now, nice memories associated with them.

I am currently sewing another one. Yes, it's a bit late, but said person will not receive theirs until next week.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 01/12/2021 20:38

Just drinking the first of the gins out of my tacky, wasteful, childish calendar, and delicious it is too! Merry Christmas everyone!

Jouleigh · 01/12/2021 20:41

I'm feeling so guilty I didn't buy DS one. He is 25, has a job and doesn't live at home.

But it's the first time I didn't get him one in 25 years! Was thinking I might wrap one up for Christmas Day and he can eat all of them at once.

He used to open the bottom, eat them and tape it up so I didn't know. I'm assuming this will be similar! Grin

CrimbleCrumble1 · 01/12/2021 20:45

ThePoisonousMushroom cheers 🍸I’m scoffing my chocolate and enjoying todays candle….and I’m not a child.

amusedbush · 01/12/2021 20:46

I’m 31 and I get myself one every year. Just a cheap Cadbury’s one, it’s only £2 but I like the little chocolates.

It wouldn’t even occur to me not to get one - I didn’t realise fun and enjoyment was only for children 😂

irregularegular · 01/12/2021 21:26

I don't get it. I'd rather just buy good chocolate. What am I missing?? It's not as if chocolate advent calendars give any surprises. Nor are they very beautiful.

I've bought these in recent years, including as presents for friends. Paris, London, New York - choose your favourite city!

My Gin one is quite pretty. Grin

TonTonMacoute

That's really nice. It's Angela Harding isn't it? I've bought jigsaws of her stuff before.

irregularegular · 01/12/2021 21:33

Sparklingbrook but probably much more expensive than the chocolate ones!

Strangely, the gin idea bothers me less than some of the others for some reason. Can't say why. Provided you really like different gins, trying small amounts of them makes some kind of sense and it's probably all recyclable glass packaging?

It's the expectation and normalisation of these things that bugs me as much as anything I guess.

It was a gift out of the blue, I'd never have bought myself one. I dread to think how much it cost. I wouldn't have an advent calendar if it wasn't for that one.
MooseBreath · 01/12/2021 21:44

I don't have one. Rarely had one as a child, so I don't see why I should as an adult.

I did get a reusable one for DS that I've put a chocolate in for each day, but it's most definitely not for me!

Chunkymenrock · 01/12/2021 21:49

They're for children. That's it!

Think social services might have something to say if I gave my gin advent calendar to my children 😬

My dh's beer one isn't for kids either! Why are they just for children?

No children are getting my Gin one or DH's Guinness one. Angry
glitterahoy · 01/12/2021 22:37

I don't have one either. The kids were a bit worried that I was missing out and can't understand that I'm not bothered Grin
I've had beauty ones given to me in the past and liked about 4 out of 24 items. Last year DH bought me a lovehoney one which we both enjoyed Wink

Greydogs123 · 01/12/2021 22:45

I always buy a ordinary picture calendar because it reminds me of my childhood. This year’s is a moomin one!

Ok, I now see the point. I want one

Hoping my local shop will have the Lindt one on sale in a few days time as usual - I never mind catching up on the first week Grin

Dweni · 02/12/2021 02:28

I have a fabric one that I fill for myself each year, the pets have ones too.

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 02/12/2021 02:49

I have one but it's just a very basic one with a nativity scene on the front and then some small chocs inside each door. There's no rule that says you have to have a big expensive one with loads of skincare/alcohol/make up etc.

Ilovetea33 · 02/12/2021 04:07

I have four: chocolate (2), tea and cheese. The cheese one (from a local shop) is particularly nice.
