French Man has fingers removed to resemble "alien."

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but it popped up on my news feed and I initially thought it would make a lighthearted "Oh look, a man identifying as an alien now" post.

Reading the article it's absolutely horrific. This poor man needs help, not people indulging his delusions. The surgeons involved need struck off, whatever country they're in.

TW - images are disturbing.

I'm almost as shocked the paper has this under "Beauty, Cosmetic Surgery"

The beige slacks really complete his look of The Alien from M&S.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 24/11/2021 21:34

Surgeons should never have even entertained this. What happened to do no harm?
Madness.

Tyrantosaurus · 24/11/2021 21:43

That's up to them to manage. People with body modifications shouldn't have to stay indoors in case they frighten someone while they are just going about their lives

Ok body modifications, ok fine, this guy looks like a rotted corpse in the picture posted by PP. I'm an adult woman and he really does look scary. I guess it's up to him, but this isn't a case of 'managing emotions' - how often does one see people this modified?

As I say, I'm not some Pearl clutched, but he's clearly an outlier.

So, apparently this man really has had his fingers removed, after a whole load of other weird procedures - including tatooed eyeballs! Shock In a sense he's achieved his aim, because his behaviour and obsession is indeed totally alien to how many humans think.

You could not pay me enough to have that stuff done to me, I'm happy to keep my imperfect face and body. I feel sad for people who feel so unhappy with what nature gave them, especially when there was nothing wrong with what they had.

iglpgl · 24/11/2021 22:33

For those asking why doctors would do this kind of thing - it appears to have been done by a tattoo and piercing artist: www.instagram.com/p/CWWfcS3AMk2/

No? What about facial tattoos of extreme threat or unacceptable images, say a swastika?

Somebody with the physical changes this person has made is not "just going about their lives".
They crave the reaction (and possibly the revulsion) of others.

This man doesn't have extreme threat or swastikas tattooed on him, as far as I can see, though. 'Unacceptable' is very subjective. The way he looks may bother you, but I don't really care, why should he have to hide away in case others find him scary, and how does that even work with regard to others who have disfigurements that they didn't choose to have? Should they hide away, or is it only those who choose to look different that need to hide?

Maybe he is looking for a reaction, people often do/wear/say things to get a reaction of others, it's been going on since the dawn of time.

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 25/11/2021 00:07

The articles says he's also had his nose and upper lip cut off tooShock

I would wonder if it possibly has to do with self-revulsion also.

Either way I don’t think these are the actions of a happy and healthy man.

Kanaloa · 25/11/2021 00:11

I mean he’s disabling himself if nothing else. I know it’s not a ‘severe’ disability but there’s no cause for losing fingers unless you have to.

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 25/11/2021 00:15

I'm not sure I agree that those surgeons should be struck off. Where do we draw the line? Why is it ok for a man to have breast implants, or for someone to change the shape of their nose, or modify their labia, but it's not ok for this man to want to look like an alien?

It's an interesting argument. I do think it's very sad to see what cosmetic surgery does to some people, but I think it's very, very difficult to decide what is and isn't acceptable in terms of changing your appearance. It's his body and if he's got the money for the surgery then why can't he have it? We don't know that he isn't capable of making decisions for himself - maybe that 30 year old woman from your work wasn't capable of making decisions about herself when she chose to have her nose straightened out, because she should have loved herself the way she was and clearly wasn't in her right frame of mind? It just seems to be based on what is socially acceptable to change about ourselves. It means nothing, really.

Barbarantia · 25/11/2021 00:16

We've gone from every single difference from the norm being labelled abnormal
To
Realising some differences are just normal variations and shouldn't be treated as abnormal
To
Being unable to call out any difference, even the worst breaks with reality.

There's a difference between respect and negligence and not realising this person needs support enters the negligence zone.

My god that article is so quotable!!! The Looping Effect!!! Transient Mental Illness!!! Share share and share.
It was written in 2000. Imagine the thousands of eggshells that would be broken if it were written now.

He’s removing his fingers.

Someone having their nose straightened out isn’t disabling themselves. It’s ridiculous to pretend they’re comparable.

PrincessNutella · 25/11/2021 02:14

oh hey if he wants to be aliegender who am I to say no

fallfallfall · 25/11/2021 02:48

it breaks my heart to see this i bet he was an adorable little boy once.
self harm to the extreme.

Meruem · 25/11/2021 07:36

It is very sad but it seems it’s gone way too far now for him to ever back down from. The large majority of what he’s had done isn’t reversible so he either lives with it or realises he made a mistake, but what good would that do him? He can’t ever go back to “normal” now.

I can’t remember the name of it now, but there was a show on tv a while back, where people with various body “issues” all lived in a house together for a while. There was a man with one leg and it transpired he’d had a healthy leg amputated because he never felt “right” with it. It’s shocking but we can’t know what it’s like to feel that way.
Why on earth was my comment deleted?

Anyway I'll re-post the link. Presumably a link from one of America's most venerable publications isn't against the rules.

I'd suggest you read this OP [[https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2000/12/a-new-way-to-be-mad/304671/]]
Wow, that’s one of the most interesting articles I’ve read in a long time. Thanks.

OneOfTheGrundys · 25/11/2021 08:10

All that money, pain and work and he still looks like a human.

KittenKong · 25/11/2021 08:13

Aliens don’t exist. If there are other ‘live’ things out there... who knows what they could look like.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/11/2021 08:23

@30whatacrock

What kind of ethical doctor would do this.
Exactly! What about "first do no harm?"Confused

Yes, yes, yes

Rubyupbeat · 25/11/2021 08:41

Absolutely heartbreaking, he really needs help, it's a kind of self harm.
He was such a good looking guy before.
