She is also old enough to drive? I mean we have no idea what she is in alien terms. Just a weird and creepy stranger in the woods.

Whinge · 04/11/2021 08:20

According to a quick Google both the lead actors are 14 in real life.

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed they were the same age at all.

foxgoosefinch · 04/11/2021 08:21

Oh, Monty the Penguin was definitely my favourite!

I like this one okay, but it’s a bit meh. I’m getting sick of their adverts being so derivative and samey - breathy vocals, quirky giving of present, blah blah. Can’t they come up with something a bit different?

TwinklyBranch · 04/11/2021 08:22

Meh. Not the worst Christmas ad they've ever made but definitely not one of the classics.
Might have to go and rewatch all the good ones now.

EdgeOfTheSky · 04/11/2021 08:22

JL are becoming a pastiche of themselves.

I am much preferring the competitive sparring between Aldi and Sainsbury’s et al.

[/quote] This one really did have me in floods of tears..
SickAndTiredAgain · 04/11/2021 08:23

I didn’t think them meeting in the woods was creepy, but I was expecting him to bring her to the family Christmas. That seems like a more festive, sharing, Christmassy thing to do.

BeforetheFlood · 04/11/2021 08:24

I don't hate it, but I don't really get it either. It doesn't make me want to buy anything (I didn't notice anything to buy - perhaps because I don't have youngish kids anymore so didn't notice the clothes.) It doesn't make me feel particularly christmassy or seem very relatable either, in the way previous ones did with nativity plays and stuff.

The story was a weirdly direct copy of ET with the device of lights flashing on and off, but it just seemed a bit cheap and lazy instead of like a tribute IYSWIM. They could have come up with something more original and creative, and more connected to a JL product. (But since I have no intention of buying anything from JL this year I'm not mad about that 🤷‍♀️)

All in all it's a solid 5 out of 10 meh from me.

StCharlotte · 04/11/2021 08:26

@Sparklingbrook

We nkow wait to see what everyone else comes out with. John Lewis adverts are generally better than the rest of the offerings. Although the Argos one with Nandi Bushell drumming still retains top spot for me.
How have I never seen that Argos ad? God knows I watch enough TV!

My "favourite" tearjerker ad was the McDonald's Forever Young ad and I don't even have kids.

middleager · 04/11/2021 08:27

I'm also getting a Home Alone 2 vibe, with the bobble hat, being initially scared of the 'bird lady' in Central.Park etc.

I'm not a fan of any breathy song, but taking on this classic, a favourite of mine, is irritating.

My 15 year old son looks 11 or 12 still. He wears clothes for that age group too, so not that unusual.

But I don't like the tag line. It is creepy.

I'm glad their sexist, woke insurance ad was pulled.

StCharlotte · 04/11/2021 08:28

Actually I quite like the dialled down consumerism in that it was mostly about the decorations etc.

SolasAnla · 04/11/2021 08:29

@TheRealHousewife

Actually I like it. The message is about connecting, sharing and being kind. ❤️ Brought a tear.
Is being kind about having sexual feelings?

Platonic kindness is a little more in the Christmas spirit

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 04/11/2021 08:31

'Tis shite

FuckToiletTraining · 04/11/2021 08:31

It’s not their best but it’s ok. It’s got the general feel.

However, it reminded me with Stranger Things with the lights and I’m generally petrified of anything with aliens in so… I won’t be watching again.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/11/2021 08:36

Meh.

I am very sentimental crybaby and it left me underwhelmed.

Bit of a smash up of ET and Stranger Things but weirdly dull.
Wonder who they were aiming for?

Df didn't make me feel christmassy or warm and fuzzy

Have you seen the price of their decorations.... Shock
RavingAnnie · 04/11/2021 08:37

Brilliant. Love it.

Haven't had one yet that beats the 2011 one though which made me sob the first time I watched it and gives me Christmassy goosebumps and a tear in my eye even now....

Tal45 · 04/11/2021 08:39

I like the 2013/2014 ones (The Bear and the Hare and Monty the penguin). No one wants a spaceship advert for Christmas IMO.

Better than that dreadful man on the moon one though.
PermanentTemporary · 04/11/2021 08:42

Absolutely SOBBING @RavingAnnie.

Seeing out children behave unselfishly is the best of the best, hence this one got me too.

[Orders chestnuts and large garland plus more lights]

DeJaDont · 04/11/2021 08:45

I really want a fan of this years. Feels very flat and yes to it being a bit off a ET rip off

Kendodd · 04/11/2021 08:47

How dull must my life be, that I actually really look forward to the Christmas adverts! GrinGrinGrin

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/11/2021 08:50

@MrsElijahMikaelson1

Proper sobbing over the alternative one-so so lovely but maybe too sad for mainstream christmas advert.

However I will buy the single so hope it will make a difference

youngestisapsycho · 04/11/2021 08:50

It's shit and ruined my favourite song Angry

LookItsMeAgain · 04/11/2021 08:50
