Tinned potatoes. I can still taste them now. My mother thought them a wonderful effort saver given they just need 'warmed through'. Every bloody meal In The North East in the 80's but only allowed in summer cos it was mash in winter. Weird plasticy/salty/metallic taste, slightly slimy, perfect round shape and usually bullet hard so they'd shoot off over the room at the presence of a fork. Only 'warmed through' so basically 'cold' so butter never melted on them. There was always a stock of about 10 maxi tins in the cupboard

When covid first hit here in NZ in March 2020 my Kiwi friends' British DH did a minor panic shop so they were prepped with a stock of long life goods for the oncoming lockdown apocalypse. He came home with 10 tins of marrow fat peas, 10 tins of potatoes, 10 tins of corned beef and 10 tins of mackerel in tomato sauce. Kiwi friend said her only response was 'What the fuck is all this shite?!' She was completely boggled at the potatoes.

Apparently his idea was the mackerel or corned beef with peas or potatoes on rotation for lunch and dinner come Armageddon and one tin would make 4 meals so his plan was that the tin based haul would last the two of them three weeks. They were placed in a secret cupboard to deter looters

She admitted that they'd all appeared in WFH meals recently during our current lockdown as they were the only things left in the house and that tinned potatoes and mackerel In tomato sauce were the best WFH meal as they 'just needed warming through but sometimes I just say fuck it and eat them cold out of the tin' Grin

Re tinned potatoes - My mum used to slice them up and fry in butter. It's about the only way they taste nice!

I went to a wedding once where the 'wedding breakfast' was cold chicken, salad and tinned potatoes. The potatoes were stone cold and possibly served straight from the tin. There were no condiments or dressings. I can still remember the disappointment of that meal! (especially as I'd rushed to get there and not eaten anything all day).

Puff pastry.

Literally a piece of frozen puff pastry, purposely under-cooked, and eaten with nothing else added.

@HuntingoftheSnark

A couple of weeks ago I bit into a (fairly old but not mouldy) nectarine. The stone broke in half and a thousand tiny creatures fell out, all over me. Upon googling, these were earwigs and it's not entirely uncommon. That was the most hideous lunch I have ever had and I will never look at a nectarine again.
Oh noooo! I really hate earwigs, I'd be traumatised by that 🤢

We can kind of forgive the nectarine as it was an accident but this... THIS for the winner!

Tinned potatoes decanted into a Tupperware container with mayonnaise and small chunks of cheddar was a lunch I quite often took into the office ! Sometimes added sweetcorn or chopped pepper .

Hula hoops filled with cheese and dipped in salad cream.

I really have to try tinned potatoes.

mumandbambinos · 06/11/2021 23:38

6 x orange bits from jaffa cakes. I am coeliac so can't eat the base. I regularly dehead jaffa cakes for the orange bit and lob the base at DH or put the bases in the bin (sacrilege I know)

@Blessex

Can’t beat a tin of boneless sardines in tomato sauce
Ooh, yes you can. Tesco mackerel fillets in Katsu curry sauce.

You won't regret it, @Blessex Wink .

I awed colleagues on the day my lunch was a leftover cauliflower cheese toastie.

I would have been incredibly jealous...I love a cauli cheese sarnie, especially if I can thrown some grilled bacon in with it!

I've just remembered I once had a bowl of sliced hot dogs when I was hungover.
