I'm clearly a bit bored...

Richard Burke is my perfect man and he and Monica made a much better couple than she and Chandler.

I really couldn't stand Susan. Or Emily.

Ross Geller is the funniest friend and mellowed a lot as he aged.

The Rachel and Joey hook up was totally wrong on all levels. She just wouldn't have gone there.

Kathy cheating on Chandler was pretty unbelievable (in real life both actors protested this, obviously to no avail).

Phoebe was a bit of a bitch who often threw her friends under the bus.

I preferred David the science guy to Mike, he was very funny.

It would have been nice for Joey to have a happier ending, a dream woman or part in a hit show.

Rachel's wardrobe is absolutely incredible.

Monica's Mum is really awful to her.

I hate to say it but Joey is a bit of a loser. Though he was the only one who never got drunk throughout the entire show.

Janice was actually really nice.

I'm sure I have more :-)

@DivorceAdvicePlease123

Also a fun fact - Ellen DeGeneres turned down the role of Phoebe. Thank fuck for that!
Can't see her in it. Lisa Kudrow is Phoebe.
Crunchymum · 31/10/2021 19:40

Ross had all the best episodes.

I loved Chandler and Monica (I did also really like Richard)

Most of the cameos were ingenious. I mean Brad Pitt and the "I hate Rachel club" was superb.

I loved Paul Rudd as Mike. He was my favourite non friend character.

Joey annoyed me. I never got him at all. I do however love a more mature Matt Le Blanc (in his Top Gear gig!)

Janice was an incredibly well written character.

I liked Phoebe. She was witty and sharp and kooky.

godmum56 · 31/10/2021 19:40

@CinderFuckingRe11a

Richard was 46
but Tom Selleck, who played him, was 51 at the time...but Tom Selleck.....he's 76 now and I still would

I didn't think so. She had her moments but was the least spoilt and dramatic of the bunch really.

I think she was selfish and pretty dramatic too. She constantly used the death of her mum to get people to do what she wanted, and whenever someone was upset about something, she brought up some part of her time of the streets as if it was a competition as to who had it worse.

No doubt she was supposed to have had a bad childhood but even so, I don't think she was a pleasant character after the first couple of seasons.

SilenceOfThePrams · 31/10/2021 19:43

Monica and Chandler worked so so well. They made each other better. Loved that.

Rachel and Joey would have been so good though. They were both pretty shallow, Rachel would have loved attending all Joey’s premieres and soap rehearsals etc., he would have been happy to be dressed by her, they would have been a much better than Rachel and Ross. Plus Rachel and Ben don’t get along particularly well; would Ross really have chosen her over his son? Not sure where Ben went though.

Phoebe would’ve been good with David or Mike. But maybe Mike would be willing to share just for the days David is back?

Ross should have ended up with Charlie really. Or alone with multiple restraining orders against him. Brilliant actor but horrible horrible character. Rachel didn’t deserve him. She would have had much more fun with Joey.

And why on Earth did none of them move into Monica’s apartment? Rent controlled so cheaper than any of the others, far nicer than the other two…

In my head, having got off the plane, Rachel and Ross had three good months together then Ross became unreasonably jealous and controlling, Rachel wised up and moved out (ideally back into Monica’s apartment which she’d agreed to keep on in case Paris didn’t work out). Living next door to Joey the two of them further developed their friendship and ultimately did power on through and realise they were soulmates.

Ross had a breakdown and was admitted to psychiatric hospital for several months, funded by his parents. This finally enabled him to make fundamental changes, deal with his insecurities, and actually grow up. He then settles down with 50 50 custody of both children and does proper parenting with them both when he has them, not just dragging them round to his sister’s house. Although they do enjoy going out to the suburbs to visit their younger cousins too. Eventually Ross does find a wife and they have a third child.

Meanwhile Monica becomes the ultimate driven full time parent for a few years. They have more children - Erica just doesn’t know how it happens but it seems to all the same. They may have a birth child too at some point, I haven’t worked that out yet. But if they do then all children will be loved equally.

When Monica is ready to go back to work she sets up a business delivering gourmet ready meals in discreet packaging for busy moms on the go. This business takes off and she and Chandler run it together, balancing work and home life and giving their children all the opportunities they wanted to be able to provide for them.

Joey a d Rachel do not have any more children, but Emma is accepted by Joey’s family as his adorable step daughter and has a wild time with all his sisters’ many children as well as Rachel and Ross’ wider family.

Phoebe and Mike lose touch with the rest of them, to Mike’s enormous relief. They do have a child. Mike’s parents step in to provide a nanny who can teach Phoebe how to actually parent toning down her floopiness into more acceptable levels of freestyling.

Well. That’s my theory anyway.

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 19:43

I hated the job favreau character. When Monica was agonising over not fancying him- that was your gut screaming dear! He was a creep who tried to buy you.

Driposaurus · 31/10/2021 19:45

Rewatching the plots are ropey, the jokes are corny and sometimes offensive, the cast is unrepresentative, and the characterisation is increasingly lazy but… it still just “works”.

But DS and JA steal the comedy with their body language and quirks. I agree with PPs that David Schwimmer does so much with his (intensely irritating) character.

AosSi · 31/10/2021 19:45

Monica would 100% be That Parent who comes on MN to insist she's right and gets laughed about in the school staffroom.

SickAndTiredAgain · 31/10/2021 19:45

They did have some great cameos. George clooney as a Dr was good.
My favourite though, and it’s only one scene, is Billy Crystal and Robin Williams in Central Perk.

AndTheWinnerIsLucky · 31/10/2021 19:47

@Whereismylatte

I wasn't a big fan of Paul Rudd's Mike, I found him a bit bland. But I have liked Paul Rudd in other things
I agree about Mike but I feel the same about Paul Rudd in everything. It's unfortunate because he seems like a nice enough guy and is cute but he's just so bland in general.
RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 19:48

Rachel having Emma was such a manipulative move by the writers. It meant Rachel was permanently saddled with Ross and they were inevitably going to end up together. Such a cop out.

AndTheWinnerIsLucky · 31/10/2021 19:52

@Lily78123

I would not want to be friends with Rachel in real life. Such a selfish and back-stabbing character.
Rachel was the worst. Her character wasn't entertaining, just showed how horrible some people can be and get away with it because they're x,y,z. Somehow, she managed to be liked for her hair, clothes and looks (which Jennifer found annoying because she wanted fans for the quality of her work, she said) but her character wasn't it at all.

Got a few chuckles from her and she could only play well with other characters.

AndTheWinnerIsLucky · 31/10/2021 19:59

@icedcoffees

I don't think Joey or Phoebe's characters changed much throughout the show compared to the others.

I think they changed the most.

Joey was massively dumbed down in the later seasons and became quite selfish whereas in the early seasons he was all about his Friends. Phoebe became really bitchy and rude towards pretty much everyone, whereas at first she was just a bit hippy-ish and ditzy.

Oh yes I agree. Matt went from nothing to huge just from Friends alone, and I don't think he's done anything else bigger than that. He cba but be eternally grateful for it.

I enjoyed his spin off show, Joey but it was axed, I think.

He strikes me as a bit of an arsehole irl though.

AndTheWinnerIsLucky · 31/10/2021 20:00

@icedcoffees

I really was surprised by how humble, funny and self deprecating Matt Le Blanc was in that special. He outshone the rest of the cast and just seemed to be bemused by the whole thing but utterly happy to have been a part of it

I read somewhere that he was flat broke when he got offered the part of Joey and that the first thing he did when he got paid was to buy himself a hot meal.

I think he's hugely appreciative of how much FRIENDS changed his life forever, maybe more so than the others.

This was the post I was quoting above.
clary · 31/10/2021 20:08

@DivorceAdvicePlease123 that's a great Friends factoid about Joey not getting drunk. Just challenged DD to name that Friend and she was on it.

We also have - which friend kisses all the others? The answer is, none of them that we see, but if we accept Rachel and Monica kissing to get the flat back then it's Rachel.

I puzzle over the timeline with Richard and the Gellers, but Judy was pg when they married it is revealed so they were not, like, 30 when the kids were born.

I think Richard was a bit younger than the Gellers, married and had kids out of high school, and is late 40s when Monica, late 20s, dates him. It is OK except that she knew him when she was a child, which is a bit icky. Shame as TS is soooo dreamy.

Oh I’ve never thought he seemed like an arsehole. He did Episodes which involved him playing an awful version of himself which I think takes a certain amount of good humour and not taking yourself too seriously.

clary · 31/10/2021 20:09

I love Joey the best btw (tho I agree he gets stupider as the seasons go on). I also think Matt LeBlanc has done the best - Top Gear and the marvellous marvellous Episodes.

Also think he looks yummmmmmy now :)

clary · 31/10/2021 20:10

Ha @SickAndTiredAgain x post, he is brilliantly self-deprecating in Episodes. I utter utter wish they would make another series, I will watch Mangan and Greig reading the phone book tbh.

Courtier · 31/10/2021 20:11

As a 26-year-old the idea of dating my fathers mate makes me want to vomit. So Richard is a bit gross actually IMO.

Agree with most of the rest, Joey got dumber throughout I swear to the point of almost annoying.

I love chandler, Monica and Phoebe. Rachel was kind of shit to everyone she dated.

SkylarFerris · 31/10/2021 20:11

I loved all the cameos
Ben stiller the screamer
Danny devito the stripper
Stiffler’s mom as Amanda

iwishiwasafish · 31/10/2021 20:25

Monica should have ended up with Richard.

Ross I couldn’t stand, even though he had funny lines. He was so incredibly self centred, and treated everyone badly, but particularly Rachael. I had absolutely no idea what she saw in him. It was like a case study of an abusive relationship at times.

Joey had a spin off series, which was supposed to showcase the happy ending, but it got cancelled.

clary · 31/10/2021 20:26

I also meant to say, tho he is never well-read, Joey has really great emotional intelligence in the earlier seasons.

YY to the episode where he sorts out his parents (that includes my absolutely fave scene where his mum puts back the sofabed), and also the opener where he sorts it out so that Monica and Chandler can kiss at NY - that is really sensitive and perceptive ("who'd you rather you sister kissed, me or Chandler?") Grin

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 20:32

When you watch it back you see that she didn’t actually see anything in him. She knew he had fancied her since high school, he even asked her when she first arrived at Monica’s if it would be ok if he asked her out sometime and she said it would be, but then went about her merry way paying him no attention at all. Apparently, him buying her a brooch that meant he loved her made her realise she fancied him too Confused having never realised she fancied him in all the years previously. It’s was nonsense basically.

Definitely, Joey in the early seasons is such a lovely character - sensitive and a little naive in a way too.
Metallicalover · 31/10/2021 20:36

Am I the only one who dislikes Rachel? 🤣
Haha!
She was mean, very self centred, treat people like s**t!
She treat Ross like that when he was a teen, the way she came into the show to see Monica and live with her and never even invited her to the wedding. She was going to take her child to the other side of the world away from her father and her entire family!
