I'm clearly a bit bored...

Richard Burke is my perfect man and he and Monica made a much better couple than she and Chandler.

I really couldn't stand Susan. Or Emily.

Ross Geller is the funniest friend and mellowed a lot as he aged.

The Rachel and Joey hook up was totally wrong on all levels. She just wouldn't have gone there.

Kathy cheating on Chandler was pretty unbelievable (in real life both actors protested this, obviously to no avail).

Phoebe was a bit of a bitch who often threw her friends under the bus.

I preferred David the science guy to Mike, he was very funny.

It would have been nice for Joey to have a happier ending, a dream woman or part in a hit show.

Rachel's wardrobe is absolutely incredible.

Monica's Mum is really awful to her.

I hate to say it but Joey is a bit of a loser. Though he was the only one who never got drunk throughout the entire show.

Janice was actually really nice.

I'm sure I have more :-)

The time line of Richard being good friends with Judy and Jack ,but only being 21 years older than Monica didn't really work ,The Geller's were a fairly successful, middle class couple and I would have thought ,they would have been mid to late 50,s ,so quite a bit older than Richard ,plus Richard had a daughter the same age as Monica and she owed in his pool ,he must have always had a wealthy lifestyle from a young age.

But Danny the yeti was clearly in a relationship with his sister 😅

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 18:49

I never understood why they killed off Mr Heckles and Joanna. Those characters had the potential for some great comedy scenes in later episodes.

100% agree Joey should have had a happy ending. A heart of gold he had

I want to know if the rest of the family thought it was weird or whether they all had weird incestuous tickling matches!

inmyslippers · 31/10/2021 18:51

Friends was never funny

Fluffyteal272 · 31/10/2021 18:52

I've been rewatching too and what's struck me is what a fantastic actor D.S is, also J.A. The way they deliver the lines, the subtle facial expressions, they're both brilliant.

FETOCT2021 · 31/10/2021 18:53

@inmyslippers I tend to agree (although I do think Chandler made me laugh out loud in some episodes). I’m a fan of friends but i don’t really see it as a comedy. It’s more of a warm cosy nostalgic program that I enjoy.

3ormorecharacters · 31/10/2021 18:54

@elenacampana

I really like Monica and Chandler together - I’ve always seen them as the true love story of Friends, over Ross and Rachel!

Hard to have a Friends thread atm without mention of Gunther… he had hair brighter than the sun ☀️

I agree, I really like Monica and Chandler together. I think season 5 where they're together in secret is where the show peaked. Everything that came before was good too but season 5 was great, I almost wore out the videotapes as a teen 😂

I do think it went downhill quite quickly after that. The writing got lazy - e.g. Chandler stopped being actually witty and started just making stupid noises for laughs. (Possibly related to Matthew Perry's real life struggles.)

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 18:56

Monica had some terrible haircuts!

KillingMeDeftly · 31/10/2021 18:57

@RachelHasThoseInBurgundy

I would have liked to see some closure with phoebe and her sister

I think Phoebe provided the closure when she slept with Ursula’s ex fiancé the creepy Sean Penn.

I thought Sean Penn was hilarious. He's always plays such serious roles and seems a bit too intense in real life, but he's actually very good in his rare comic roles.
SickAndTiredAgain · 31/10/2021 18:58

Susan was awful, I agree. Ross could be massively unreasonable but he wasn’t unreasonable to not be the biggest fan of the woman his wife had an affair with and left him for, especially when she refers to him as “the sperm guy” and wants the baby to have her surname over his. If she was a man Ross would have been justified in hating him, and it would have been batshit for him (male Susan) to expect the baby to have his surname. And I didn’t think much of carol in this situation either.
Can you imagine the AIBU. “Ex-DH and I are divorced but having a baby. I have a girlfriend who I’ve been with a few months and I think the baby should have mine and her surnames. Ex-DH is angry, AIBU?”
People would have told her to just give the baby her surname and not be so bloody ridiculous!
Can anyone tell that storyline irritated me?

FETOCT2021 · 31/10/2021 18:59

Why was the original Susan axed?

LittleBear21 · 31/10/2021 19:00

I'm very pro Monica and Chandler. I don't think they were settling, I think they were realistic. They worked on things together and had fairly significant personal weaknesses that they had to work on. But they cared a lot for each other, and Chandler made the scarficies Richard wouldn't; letting stay in NY and then leaving Tulsa and bigging her up with Erica. Maybe a bit too realistic for escapism telly, but I think it was really well done.

I think the Richard story line was coherent so I was absolutely fine with Monica not choosing him. Remember he did re-offer when Chandler was making a mess of proposing.

I don't think the Emily story line was coherent and that's why she's not liked. I liked her right up to her being a brat at her wedding. Had she laughed it off it would have been a nothing. Then she became controlling. But I liked her with the deer in the orchard and the one with all the rugby.

I also loved Janice.

I disliked how much dimmer they made Joey in later seasons. The episode when he deals with the flaws in his parents marriage is very different to the Joey who thought he was speaking French.

I loved Gunther speaking Dutch.

Phoebe could be too blunt; but she was better than Ursula and she had been lied to a lot and given lots of bad advice. So like the Friends, I give her a pass. I liked Mike; but David was just so lovely and so right for her......

sociallydistained · 31/10/2021 19:00

Another one to agree Tom Selleck is a dream boat. I’m 35, loved him as a teen and love him now 😳 I watch only 80s/90s thrillers just to look at him.

FETOCT2021 · 31/10/2021 19:01

When phoebe tested the same day as getting her embryos transferred 😂

3luckystars · 31/10/2021 19:02

I agree with everything in your first post! I think Monica is the most honest and decent character of the whole lot. Ross deffo the funniest!!
Rachels wardrobe was amazing.

Campfirewood · 31/10/2021 19:02

I agree with you on all of your points but Paul Rudd is GORGEOUS compared to Hank Azaria. Can’t agree on that!

Sparklingbrook · 31/10/2021 19:03

Patsy Kensit was up for the role of Emily, she turned it down because she was too in love with Liam Gallagher sadly.

Richard was such a grown up compared to Chandler, but I don't think Monica was a very nice person really.

DivorceAdvicePlease123 · 31/10/2021 19:05

Why was it unbelievable?

Because they were very much in love and in the honeymoon period. They sacrificed a lot to be together.

I must be one of the only people who actually liked Rachel and Joey. Not at the time- I was all Ross and Rachel - but in reality, Ross was a real d* and Rachel gave up her dreams for him. Joey actually loved and respected her. He could have changed for her.

I still find Ross hilarious though.

No way I love Phoebe! Ahead of her time in many ways.

BiscuitLover09876 · 31/10/2021 19:07

They were all so young. Rachel worrying about not having kids at 30 now sounds crazy. I guess 40 is the new 30!

I know it hasn't always aged well, but I still love this show and the characters were pretty awesome at the time. The gay wedding was brilliant and really forward thinking tbh.

I actually really liked Monica in the early days but I didn't like how she turned out.
Whereismylatte · 31/10/2021 19:11

I think it's been said but Helen baxendales wedding dress as Emily was designed to hide her IRL baby bump I think that's why the amazing "i take thee, Rachel " altar scene was written in
