Curry’s glitch if you want a cheap laptop

Just ordered a Dell laptop for £99! Now got to wait and see if my order actually comes next week. Anyone in the market for one should consider getting on the site and giving it a go. Dying to know if it will turn up!

Good way for a company to offload a not very good product. Make people think there's a pricing error and they're taking advantage of it and getting a massive bargain. Meanwhile company has more than made their money back on the product, got rid of a load of items that people would have looked at much more carefully and possibly not wanted had they not been rushing to get one before the company realised their 'mistake'.

That's what I'd do if I wanted to get rid of a load of fairly basic stuff that was not going to be able to handle updates coming soon.

Exactly this.

It's just an absolutely crap laptop that they've not managed to shift.

Even if 90% of these orders get cancelled they've still made a decent amount of money on something that would otherwise sit in a warehouse gathering dust.

LoveVintage · 30/10/2021 06:57

Hmm, my laptop is getting old and as I'm self-employed I'm totally dependent on it. I ordered this one last night after seeing the thread, without looking into how good the laptop is as it was such a good deal. Bit concerned now given some of the comments about its quality. Wondering if I should cancel now. Or maybe at that price, if it does come, worth having it as an emergency back up if nothing else.

Quite right
byzantinelaws · 30/10/2021 07:10

Why are you all ordering them when several PP have said it's a totally useless laptop?

@byzantinelaws

Because people think they're being clever by getting such an "amazing deal" Wink
bevelino · 30/10/2021 07:28

This appears to be a genuine offer at £99 and not a glitch. However, the particular Dell model for sale at that price was issued in 2015. Since then laptops have improved massively in design and performance.

There is nothing wrong with an older laptop but I can. see why Currys are offloading them so cheaply online. There are newer versions and their staff would struggle to convince customers to buy a laptop that is almost 7 years old in their stores.

BigYellowHat · 30/10/2021 07:55

You’ve made me nervous about whether it’s any good now! Looking online it seems that the majority verdict is that it’s good for school work and browsing the internet which is exactly what DS wants it for. If anyone wants more then maybe it’s not the right one.

Some people are so miserable! It’s not a ‘totally useless laptop’! It might not be the best and most whizzy and have be able to have all the latest updates but if you just want it to use the internet and write the occasional word document then it’s perfect!

MarbleRunaway · 30/10/2021 08:20

Hmm is it really the 2015 model? My DD has been struggling with a laptop that is a 2013 one that she inherited. She does use it most days for school and internet and a few online games. I was hoping this would be a nice gift for her, but would rather cancel if it’s awful.

I don't think it's about being miserable - more realistic.

If this laptop was any good, they wouldn't have reduced it from almost £400 to £98. Why have they had to reduce it so much to get it to sell?

Personally I think this is a good marketing gimmick by Curry's. They pretend it's an error, people think they're being clever by "taking advantage of their cock up" - but actually Curry's have now gotten rid of loads of old stock they couldn't shift before, they've made some money and got loads of website traffic at the same time!

It's a poor quality laptop with a tiny memory and only 4GB of RAM, meaning it'll be painfully slow after not very long and you'll not be able to download or stream very much without it crashing or freezing on you!

DELL Inspiron 15 3583 15.6" Laptop - Intel® Pentium®, 128 GB SSD, Black £99.98. This is the laptop currently advertised on Currys website and the 15 in the title indicates the year it was released. There is nothing wrong with it and is good enough for school work and browsing the internet, but it is an old model that Currys have decided to place online.
TheLazyChef · 30/10/2021 08:48

Has anyone managed to add delivery to it please?

It's not allowing me to, saying collection only.

Could someone help please? We are on a bit of a budget, and this would be perfect for my DC.

Don't waste your money would be my advice. It's a seven year old model with low memory and speed.
TheUndeadLovelinessOfDemons · 30/10/2021 08:53

I haven't got any money in the bank anyway. I hope it turns up op.

TheLazyChef · 30/10/2021 08:55

@icedcoffees - is it really that bad? I was kind of hoping that I'd struck gold here a bit.

I've been looking for a laptop a while now, and need it for DC just do a bit of work on it, and play some older, retro type games - Dungeon Keeper, Sims etc. Maybe a Roblox game.

If it's no use, I won't get it. Does anyone know of one that could work though?

TheFairyCaravan · 30/10/2021 09:07

I don’t think people are correct about the 15 in the description meaning that is the year it came out.

If you look on the Dell website it would appear laptops have 13, 14 or 15 in them depending on their screen size

Saintemllionsfinest · 30/10/2021 09:08

Just read that curry’s have confirm it should be £299.99 and will be issuing refunds.

Moonshine86 · 30/10/2021 09:10

It’s no longer showing as being on there for those still trying.

Moonshine86 · 30/10/2021 09:10

Where did you read it to? Thanks for the update.

Lockheart · 30/10/2021 09:13

@byzantinelaws

Because fools and money are soon parted.

Make people think they're getting a bargain they shouldn't and they'll chuck money at you even if it's crap or not even something they need.

LoveVintage · 30/10/2021 09:14

Where did you see that @Saintemllionsfinest? Kind of hoping it's true now!

PurpleLlama · 30/10/2021 09:15

Still showing as available to me

specialsauce · 30/10/2021 09:27

The 15 in the title does not indicate the year it was released. All the dell laptops at currys have either 14 or 15 in the title.

I agree. I’ve just checked DH’s Dell work laptop. It’s a brand new 14 inch screen. It’s a Dell 14 something or other. It definitely wasn’t made in 2014.
Rety · 30/10/2021 09:32

15 is screen size, not year.
