Curry’s glitch if you want a cheap laptop

Just ordered a Dell laptop for £99! Now got to wait and see if my order actually comes next week. Anyone in the market for one should consider getting on the site and giving it a go. Dying to know if it will turn up!

@Lorddenning1 What version of football manager does he play? The older versions should be fine (for some reason my husband plays 2008… Confused) but the new ones might need the settings turned right down.

@MarbleRunaway Likewise, what version of the Sims does she play? It doesn’t meet the minimum specs for The Sims 4, even for just the base pack. There just isn’t enough RAM.

Her current laptop might be old and rubbish; but it’ll likely have more RAM, so it’s playable.

IncessantNameChanger · 30/10/2021 12:12

I bought a think pad about 7 years ago with I tb of memory and more RAM for around £300 so this is no bargain at full price. But it's a good price at £99.

A safe way to get a decent laptop is via cex. They are guaranteed for 2 years. I got ds a decent one at the start of lockdown. He spilt a drink over the keyboard in under a year so I'm glad I didnt buy a top notch brand new one

itsgettingwierd · 30/10/2021 12:12

@NigellaSeed

Ooh good luck. I once got a £200 Tesco gift card instead of £20 because of a glitch!
Now that is a bargain!

I'd be mentally buying all sorts before I even got to the shop - and would have gone to one of those big superstore ones!

LikeACatInTheDark · 30/10/2021 12:19

Will it run Untitled Goose Game?
(system requirements are:
macOS 10.12+
Windows 7 SP1+ 64-Bit
DX10 graphics (shader model) )

No mention of RAM needed though..

itsgettingwierd · 30/10/2021 12:19

It wouldn't surprise me if these weren't bulk laptops the government brought to hand out during covid and have no sold on to curry's to sell to people who think they're getting a bargain!

But I'm a cynical cow Grin

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 30/10/2021 12:30

For all those saying it's crap. It's not crap if you are currently using a 10 year old laptop with a broken screen (like my son is for homework especially as everything is on now Teams) and can't afford £300 for even the most basic other models.

For some people this laptop is a bargain at £99 as it may be the only chance they have of improving on what they have now. Good luck and I hope it turns out to be a real offer.

TheSunIsStillShining · 30/10/2021 12:38

This is quite a crappy one. 4gig memory will be eaten up by the OS and chrome alone, leaving zero chance to get anything done.
I love dell, but wouldn't go below i7 processor.

I currently don't have a laptop or a computer, so ANYTHING is better than my current situation!

But equally, it would be a shame if people spent their last £100 on a laptop for their DC only to find it couldn't be used for what they want it for.

A laptop with 4GB of RAM won't run most any games and it only ha 128GB of memory on it - that's the same amount as my iPhone. It's nowhere near good enough to run things Zoom, Roblox or other similar basic games and apps.

It would be fine to just browse the internet but most people are going to want to download things like Microsoft Office, Teams, Zoom, a few games for children to play, Netflix, Spotify etc. and a laptop with that little memory just won't be up to doing that.

MarbleRunaway · 30/10/2021 12:58

@TakeYourFinalPosition

It’s an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4200U CPU 1.60GHz with 8GB ram - it takes forever to start up and is slow but it’s never been reformatted and the desktop is covered with junk that I don’t even recognise.

It’s slow but works, but she will want to play Roblox and Sims 4 as well as homework, internet and YouTube. She doesn’t use it for Netflix as it’s not allowed to be taken to her room.

RobbieWeirdicht · 30/10/2021 13:00

Can I please ask for those of us that aren't great with technology (me!), is there any way that the memory/RAM can be improved - maybe with an external hard drive etc. if it's needed?

CheesecakeAddict · 30/10/2021 13:07

I can still see it and there is an option for me to get it delivered. I don't think it is a mistake.

I upgraded mine from 4GB to 8GB for £35 😁

Not that I know how easy it is to upgrade on these specific laptops, most laptops these days can have memory and ram upgraded 😁

Yes, but buying a decent amount of extra RAM will probably cost you more than the laptop!
TheSunIsStillShining · 30/10/2021 13:19

re:upgrades
unless you buy official upgrade with the original purchase it makes warranty void.

And with Dell I would not chance that. I had ventilator and power source issues with mine.
Some pieces are great, some are utter crap. Depends on what day they got assembled maybe? AS with cars :)

another info, not sure how relevant though: about 2 years ago there was an MS OS upgrade that had a very adverse effect on specifically a few series of dells. Messed with the memory allocation and video card usage. F*ck me over badly in terms of photo editing. (but this is no fault of dell, it is fully on microsoft! and I only notice it with photo editing and playing Starcraft - both used to be primary functions of my laptop...)
so if you want to do stuff that is not the run of the mill browsing, editing docs,... it's worth looking into it.

TheLazyChef · 30/10/2021 13:24

I know I've already posted on here, however I'm so disappointed that it isn't the bargain I thought.

Could anyone please point me to where I could find what I need for a reasonable cheap price please?

My DC will use it for education, a couple of games (The Sims / Roblox) and browsing or video.

Doesn't need to be state of the art, I am realistic about what I can get for a budget. Just work at a basic level for these things.

As some PP said, it's no good if it doesn't function for what it would be used for.

DH said you can just use an external hard drive or a memory stick to back it up. We always encouraged our kids to do that with school and uni work, anyway, just incase the laptop went tits up.
ImUninsultable · 30/10/2021 13:27

@RobbieWeirdicht

It isnt always a yes. It depends on the model. You would need to check the model.
Lots of laptops have sealed bottoms or memory that's soldered onto the motherboard so you cant upgrade the RAM on those. Also, there is a limit on RAM which depends on the motherboard. You'd need to check the limit on that. If it is 4GB then you cant upgrade this laptop.

ImUninsultable · 30/10/2021 13:28

@TheFairyCaravan

Your husband is wrong. Adding an extra hard drive or memory stick does not increase RAM.

icedcoffees · 30/10/2021 13:31

DH said you can just use an external hard drive or a memory stick to back it up. We always encouraged our kids to do that with school and uni work, anyway, just incase the laptop went tits up.

Neither of those things will increase the RAM, they just mean you can save your work to an external drive, so if the laptop crashes, you don't lose everything.

RAM upgrades the actual memory of the machine (which improves how it runs, it's speed and whether you can run certain games and applications), and it's not necessarily possible to do that.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 30/10/2021 13:33

@TheFairyCaravan That provides more memory, not more RAM. They are critically different.

There’s nothing to say the motherboard on this will accept more RAM, but it might.

@MarbleRunaway I’d re-format what you’ve already got, it’s got double the RAM of this one. If there’s likely to be documents on it that you need, use an external hard drive to back them up - you can get them pretty cheaply - or a USB stick. If it’s just full of rubbish; reformat and it’s almost certain to outperform this one.

The one you have is better than this one. Don't waste your money.

osprey24 · 30/10/2021 13:36

The spec said maximum upgradable 16RAM

ImUninsultable · 30/10/2021 13:36

I'm actually unreasonably annoyed at that comment with the wisdom from the husband.

A thread full of comments about the processing power of this machine being really the lowest you can get, along with very minimum storage space.
And someone comes along with, "well my husband says".

We dont need help from a man who doesnt know the difference between RAM and storage and tices incorrect advice, thanks anyway though.

icedcoffees · 30/10/2021 13:38

@osprey24

Upgrading it to 16GB of RAM will likely cost more than the actual laptop. You may as well spend £200 on a machine that does everything you need in the first place!
