Curry’s glitch if you want a cheap laptop

BigYellowHat · 29/10/2021 22:13

Just ordered a Dell laptop for £99! Now got to wait and see if my order actually comes next week. Anyone in the market for one should consider getting on the site and giving it a go. Dying to know if it will turn up!

@Franklin12

i agree too. This is a typical techie response with people looking down at you for ONLY doing some browsing and online shopping. So what if that is all you are planning to do.

£99 is a great price to pay.

Most posters wanted this for their kids for Christmas so they could play games like The Sims and Roblox. I (and others) were just pointing out that a laptop like this won't allow them to do that.

It's not "looking down on someone" to point out that they'd be wasting their money. If you're struggling for money, surely the last thing you want to do is waste £100 on something that won't do what you want it for?

icedcoffees · 01/11/2021 14:58

@Maddison12

Weird though as someone up thread posted that they had spoken to curry's on live chat and they said that was the proper price and they'd be honouring orders 🤔
Curry's probably didn't anticipate thousands of people ordering it, though. MN has a huge audience and the link was also posted on several "bargain deal" websites. Not all websites update automatically when things are sold out and I suspect it may be a case that it was over-ordered and they can't fulfil everyone's orders.

I read the first bit too quickly and read it as 'curry's probably didn't anticipate thousands of MNers ordering it' really made me laugh 😆.

Think you're probably right though, would be interesting to know how many orders were actually placed!

Gingerkittykat · 01/11/2021 16:21

My order was cancelled too but the laptop is still showing up on the Currys site at the same price.

julieca · 01/11/2021 16:49

It shouldnt still be showing on the website. That needs reporting to Trading Standards.

inappropriateraspberry · 01/11/2021 16:57

For those still wanting a cheap laptop - I've just come across this.

Just been to CEX, got a chromebook from them for £105, if you have a local one, might be worth going in with the specs from this one and seeing if they can recommend anything

Are you sure it's not a cached page? It was back up to £319 when I looked at lunchtime.
Jjjayfee · 01/11/2021 22:42

My order just cancelled and money refunded. Seems odd to me that they can take my money then refund it. I thought we had a contract. Obviously not!

Contract is formed on dispatch of goods. It's in the small print. Nothing odd about it, almost all companies have the same to stop chancers trying to sue over genuine price errors.
WeAreTheHeroes · 02/11/2021 08:16

I can only see that laptop using your link @RobbieWeirdicht, not by looking on the Curry's website. If I add it to my basket it then isn't there when I try to complete the transaction.

Gimlisaxe · 02/11/2021 11:21

Has anyone else recieved a welcome to your new tech email from curry's?

AutumnAura · 02/11/2021 11:41

@Jjjayfee you don't have a contract when you choose to purchase something that's a glitch and has been shared into huge forums for others to take advantage of said glitch, no.

AutumnAura · 02/11/2021 11:43

And the first few responses on this thread were ' don't waste your time and effort, your order WILL be cancelled'

People ignored that so not sure why anyone feels disappointed

ImUninsultable · 02/11/2021 11:47

@Jjjayfee

Nope. Contract isnt formed until goods are dispatched. Companies do not have to honour any order. They dont have to if it was an error or if they run out of stock.

Fuss · 02/11/2021 13:10

This is why it was never going to be honoured.
Be interesting to his his feedback tank now though.

I'm now getting texts and emails asking me to feedback on my recent purchase... uhm, no!

At least you got a refund. My email said we'll refund you in 3-5 days.

I got asked for feedback on my "returned item". I gave them 0 out of 10 and told them it's not "returned" if it was never delivered. Unimpressed.
Fuss · 02/11/2021 23:37

I did say at the start of the thread that this would be very likely.

WobbleTime · 03/11/2021 09:07

My email said refund in 3-5 days but then I checked my bank 24 hrs later (yesterday) and the refund was there.

LikeACatInTheDark · 03/11/2021 15:54

Cancelled Saturday, and the money has just landed back in my account 👍

ItsNotNormalLove · 03/11/2021 17:01

There's absolutely no need for those posters coming back gloatingly saying "I told you so" in different words. Especially when someone said they'd had it confirmed by curry's that it was genuine. It must make you feel so very important to have been right. Well done 👏 👏

I couldn't agree more, it is really unpleasant to see a few posters almost seeming to delight in the fact that other posters have been let down by Currys.

It's made worse because a few hopeful purchasers clearly stated that they currently have no laptop so for them even a poor spec one would be real treat and others that were hoping to get a 'starter' laptop for their child in which case an alleged inability to play online games might not be a bad thing at all!

I feel really bad because it was me that originally asked about upgrading RAM/using an external hard drive etc to improve the machine and that was when the thread really turned nasty, posters were offering kind advice and getting shot down by other posters and it was really unpleasant and unnecessary.

FWIW the RAM could have been upgraded for £80 which would make it a not too bad laptop for £180.

www.dell.com/en-uk/work/shop/dell-memory-upgrade-8gb-1rx8-ddr4-sodimm-2666mhz/apd/a9206671/memory#compatibility_section

And from the link -

Warranty

Our Limited Lifetime Warranty guarantees that if our Dell memory should ever fail, we will replace it.

Dell Memory means no worry of voiding your system’s hardware warranty.

So the folk that screamed that upgrading RAM would void the warranty would be better spending their time educating themselves rather than jumping on tech threads and scaremongering.

Those of you that know tech inside out - much respect - but most of us don't so a little kindness and help would be very much appreciated.
