How many immediate family members do you have?

I was talking to a friend earlier and they commented that my situation is unusual…

I’m 51, my husband is 57 and between us we have….

My mum and me (my dad died 17 years ago)
My husband (his parents died over 40 years ago, no siblings)

So essentially there is just the 3 of us. I do have cousins on my mums side but no family on dads side and DH has no other family. Neither of us have children.

Are we unusual?

I rarely see my father or brother. Just me and DP and we have a few friends. It’s enough when you have a lot of interests.

Mother
Sibling and partner (who I will go NC with when my mum dies).

Mum was an only child. Dad had two siblings but I've not seen them since I was a child. They have 4 children between them but I wouldn't recognise them.

I am in touch with more distant cousins, though I've not seen them for ten years or so.

Both my parents, and a brother and sister.

I went through a period of about three years when there was just me. Only child, parents deceased, divorced with no kids, last remaining uncle died and that was that. I was on my own.

I now have DH, DC and all DH's family and there are - hang on - 15 of them.

I count my immediate family as my husband and three children, and both our parents and siblings (my side there's six people and my husband's side there's seventeen!)

Me (27) and my OH (32) are polar opposites when it comes to our 'close' family. We have:

Me:
Mom & stepdad
Dad
Nan
Brother & SIL
Auntie, uncle & 3 cousins
OH:
No one really. His mom passed away this year (we were incredibly close to her)
His dad is a twice a year phone call and his sister we keep as far away as possible!

Me (31yo):

Mum, dad, younger brother. Dad's brother died in the 80s and his dad died in 1998 so it's just him and my granny. Mum's dad died in 2018 so it's my other granny, my auntie and two uncles. I have no first cousins.

DH (also 31yo):

His mum died in 2017 so it's just him and his dad. He has one granny still alive, an auntie, uncle and two younger cousins.

Neither of us are big on family so we're not close with even that small group of people!

I have my dh and 5 dc. I have an unusually large family, my mum, 5 brothers and 7 sisters, as well as about 36 nephews and nieces, and then their children. (about 60 of them), but i wouldn't be at all close with them. I have a few cousins, but all my aunts, uncles and grandparents are dead. Dh has a fair few cousins, and his mother and sister. We had a family party about 10 years ago and there was at least 100 people there.
