Stolen the idea from
Another thread. I wanted a Mr Frosty, but never got one. Apparently my parents says I never asked at Christmas or birthdays. (I did have an A la cart kitchen though.)

@Siriisatwat

Ha! Me too.

I finally bought myself one from argos a few years ago. It was SHIT.

My parents used to buy me presents and then not let me have them. I had to keep them in a box and “save” them because one day they might be worth something. So 80s things like when kids cameras first came out, all my friends had one on school trips - mine was in a box in the loft being “saved”. So many gifts like that.

My dad has dementia now and I am clearing out his house to move him near me. All those boxes of presents that would have given me such joy as a child? Worth fucking pennies on ebay, it’s not worth buying the tape to package them if they sold. All gone to the charity shop. It made me so sad.

That's really sad. It's up there with a poster who was given Royal Doulton figures as a child "as one day they'll be worth something" they were £100 ish in the late 80s / 90s only for them now to be virtually worthless.

We had all the games you had - Guess Who, Operation, Sorry, Mousetrap, Twister etc.

I also had rollerskates and a bike (can't recall which one, DB had a BMX and a Chopper).

I recall being slightly disappointed in Mousetrap.

Was allowed to make and bake loads of elaborate iced cakes.

And we got taken out a lot to theatre/musicals/art galleries and museums/restaurants/pubs. which sometimes we found boring

@Baboutheocelot

I wanted a pound puppy too, the one that opened up and had more puppies inside. I think I just got a normal one instead. I wanted the soda stream and the old toy treehouse. Didn’t get those but I did get a funfax and some crimpers.
Omg, I wanted that one too! Only I wasn’t allowed to know what pregnancy was Confused, so I knew better than to ask for it. I mean, of course I knew what pregnancy was, but I also knew I wasn’t supposed to know.

Babies of all species just appeared from God.

(I think I need my own thread on how batshit my parents were).

@brokenbiscuitsx thanks for our post office post.
It jogged my memory and I had this one!
Loved it!

I actually only ever had really small Santa lists.
Mum tells me I always asked for:
A box of chocolates
A pencil with a rubber on the top
A pussy cat.

After a few years of writing the same lost I did indeed get the Pussycat. And I cried with happiness.

I always got the box of chocs every year :)

MrsColon · 21/10/2021 16:12

Actually I think those of us who did get a Mr Frosty but were unable to turn the ice cubes into crushed ice should get a mention on this thread - I got a Mr Frosty, but even my super-strong dad couldn't turn the wheel with enough force to crush ice cubes Sad

I was devastated!

newyeardelurker · 21/10/2021 16:12

@Etinoxaurus

This is a very excluding thread. Where’s the support for those of us who didn’t get a Girl’s World?
I wanted a girls world, I got a polystyrene head, a wig and some used lipstick. Was well disappointed.
Nocutenamesleft · 21/10/2021 16:13

I was desperate for a Mr Frosty!!! My parents got me one. But it was broken. It was the last one.

I brought one when I was 38 from a charity shop! I was so excited. Best thing ever!!!

FreezerBird · 21/10/2021 16:13

I didn't have any of this stuff either - but we didn't do Christmas lists or asking for things for birthdays so I wouldn't have asked for them. I'm sure I saw stuff at friends' houses I'd have liked but never had the experience of asking for but not getting, if you see what I mean.

I did have Sindy dolls, and horses. (Sindy's horses I mean, not real ones). My dad made a stable for them out of an old shelving unit; I remember things like he made a perfect Sindy sized sweeping broom out of a toothbrush (cut the head off, shaped it and stuck it back onto the handle which he'd shaped so the angle was right).

I'm sure ten year old me would rather have had the ££££ plastic Sindy stable but now I think dad's version was pretty cool.

Bopahula · 21/10/2021 16:14

My parents were awful and dirt poor. So I never got the Mr Frosty either. I wanted the little post office in the box so much too. I at work sometimes have to use a big stamp that makes that "thud thud" noise and I smile hugely every time I use it.

My parents picked up lots of stuff second hand so I did get the yellow tea pot and fashion wheel, but about 3 years after everyone else had it. I also had an incident with marbles and the fashion wheel so had to go to hospital and it was confiscated from me for ages!

Saddest thing. I had a knitting machine. Pink plastic thing. I loved it. Parents decided that as they were so skint they were selling all our "old" toys. My brother had mega train sets as my dad loved them. He agreed to sell some of them, which were worth a lot more than any presents I got anyway. But because selling train sets second hand earned more, my dad said I was selfish and had to sell some more of my toys. I cried when he took my pink knitting machine to add to the car boot pile.
All I heard was how my my brothers stuff had earned so he'd get more presents next time too.

beigebrownblue · 21/10/2021 16:14

I wanted one of those plastic heads from Argos to practice hairstyles on. Never got on, sure it wasn't worth the money anywyay.

Cantstopthewaves · 21/10/2021 16:14

@SylvanasWindrunner

Another No Mr Frosty survivor too. I toyed with buying one as an adult but knew it would probably be a letdown. Some loves are best left unrequited.
Mr Frosty was amazing. I have photos of 6yr old me wearing my cardboard Mr Frosty hat sitting at the kitchen table, penguin syrup dispenser in hand. It really worked. (Well mine did).

Love it! I used to make my own post cards and other bits and bobs when the official ones ran out. Blush

Cantstopthewaves · 21/10/2021 16:15

Actually the one now is likely rubbish I imagine.

Hummingbirdcake · 21/10/2021 16:16

I so wanted a Mr Frosty and was desperate for one of those ovens that made the weird little pink cakes.

However, I did have Girls World.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 21/10/2021 16:17

Me too, never got a cabbage patch either.

Tempusfudgeit · 21/10/2021 16:17

🎼Big, yellow teapot!

(From Bluebird toys)

The most common one was call Girls World!
Hummingbirdcake · 21/10/2021 16:19

I do remember one Christmas, long ago, sharing an advent calendar (so opening every third door) and it wasn’t even a chocolate one.
So every three days a picture of a candle or something.

minipie · 21/10/2021 16:21

Gosh I literally had none of these.

Deprived childhood eh

onthinice · 21/10/2021 16:22

I had one and it was shit.

ParrotsAteThemAll · 21/10/2021 16:22

All I wanted was an Al a carte kitchen so I could cook Swiss roll with baked beans! The spoilt girl in my class had one and I always hated her for it!

lalahotpants · 21/10/2021 16:23

I had the girls world and the green tree thingy, never got the Mr Frosty or the spirograph set 😭

A friend had that, I was so jealous.
number87inthequeue · 21/10/2021 16:27

I always wanted a Mr Frosty, Sindy doll car/furniture etc and (a few years before that) a 'Speak and Spell'. My parents refused to buy this as it was overpriced plastic tat and we could do the same with food processor, hand made wooden dolls furniture and books. I now realise they had a point.

Little brother got Mr Frosty thought, as well as pretty much all the 'must have' toys of the late 80s (Big Track , a real BMX etc). Somehow that made it worse. He was also allowed over processed food that I had always been told was a waste of money. and he still won't eat normal food in his 40s
